Product packaging design is often produced through the practical application of tacit knowledge, rule of thumb and professional connoisseurship. Stakeholders are becoming increasingly demanding that design practitioners provide clarity of reasoning and accountability for their design proposals. Therefore, a better framework for the design of fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) is required. This paper proposes a comprehensive taxonomy of ‘design considerations’ to assist the development of low involvement FMCG packaging and aid in rationale communication for design solutions. 302 academic sources were reviewed, inductive content analysis performed to code topics and output validation with academic and industry experts (n=9) through a modified-Delphi card sorting method. The research provides movement towards a comprehensive framework and common dialogue between stakeholders, practitioners and managers to assist in more effectively communicating the value that design can offer to FMCGs. The constructed taxonomy provides a set of 156 ‘design considerations’ to support in objective and informed design decision-making.

Abstract Since the beginning of the 20th century, logistics has undergone a huge technological development, which has, however, resulted in many negative effects as well. The industry, particularly in the packaging industry has been a massive waste producer, although recently it has forced the use of new materials and it started to focus on environmentally friendly technologies. During the transportation of finished and semi-finished Electrostatic Discharge (ESD) sensitive products, the product packaging system has a vital role. These kind of packaging materials must be suitable to both logistic (protection against mechanical and environmental stresses) and special ESD protection requirements. During the transportation of printed-circuit electronic products, ESD defense is then of primary significance. However there is a huge disadvantage for the use of various shield bags. Namely, this kind of associated packaging is particularly pollutant, it causes a lot of inconvenience in the form of waste. In order to rule out these materials from the packaging system, new innovative solutions have to be found. The investigated TPS (thermoplastic starch biodegradable foam) is subjected to a validation, a long process to certify that this material unites properties of two types of packaging materials at the same time. On the one hand, this packaging foam has to meet the requirements product defense. On the other hand, the material must be anti-static under the logistic stress effects. In case it is found suitable, it can be an alternative of the conventional materials. In this article, we investigate the ESD characteristic of TPS foam. As this material sensitive for environmental parameters during transportation, we make the relevant Surface Resistance (Rs) tests on different temperature and humidity conditions. Based on result, the decision of the application can be done, as an ESD packaging material.

Abstract Purpose Results of a study to determine the 90-day stability of dronabinol capsules stored under various temperature conditions are reported. Methods High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with ultraviolet (UV) detection was used to assess the stability of dronabinol capsules (synthetic delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol [Δ9-THC] mixed with high-grade sesame oil and other inactive ingredients and encapsulated as soft gelatin capsules) that were frozen, refrigerated, or kept at room temperature for three months. The dronabinol capsules remained in the original foil-sealed blister packs until preparation for HPLC–UV assessment. The primary endpoint was the percentage of the initial Δ9-THC concentration remaining at multiple designated time points. The secondary aim was to perform forced-degradation studies under acidic conditions to demonstrate that the HPLC–UV method used was stability indicating. Results The appearance of the dronabinol capsules remained unaltered during frozen, cold, or room-temperature storage. Regardless of storage condition, the percentage of the initial Δ9-THC content remaining was greater than 97% for all evaluated samples at all time points over the three-month study. These experimental data indicate that the product packaging and the sesame oil used to formulate dronabinol capsules efficiently protect Δ9-THC from oxidative degradation to cannabinol; this suggests that pharmacies can store dronabinol capsules in nonrefrigerated automated dispensing systems, with a capsule expiration date of 90 days after removal from the refrigerator. Conclusion Dronabinol capsules may be stored at room temperature in their original packaging for up to three months without compromising capsule appearance and with minimal reduction in Δ9-THC concentration.

Проведена сравнительная оценка стойкости при хранении цельнозерновой овсяной муки (ЦМ) и мучной композитной смеси (МКС) на основе ЦМ. В состав МКС помимо ЦМ (66,7%) включены: мука пшеничная хлебопекарная высшего сорта (16,5%), сухая пшеничная клейковина (3,5%) и измельченные сушеные ягоды брусники (13,3%). Овсяную муку и МКС хранили в тканевых мешках и полиэтиленовых пакетах (ПП) при температуре (20 ± 0,5)°C и (40 ± 1)°C. Контролировали влажность, кислотность по болтушке и кислотное число жира (КЧЖ). Выявлено, что равновесная влажность овсяной муки и МКС, хранившихся в ПП при температуре (40 ± 1)°C и относительной влажности воздуха (65 ± 0,1)%, была практически одинаковой: 11,2 и 11,4% соответственно. При хранении образцов в ПП при температуре (40 ± 1)°C через 150 сут кислотность и КЧЖ МКС увеличились в 1,7 и 4,2 раза соответственно, кислотность и КЧЖ цельнозерновой овсяной муки – в 2,9 и 6,3 раза соответственно. На изменение исследуемых показателей качества также повлияли температура хранения и способ упаковки продукции. Установлено, что введение в состав МКС измельченных сушеных ягод брусники, содержащих природные антиоксиданты, привело к снижению в 1,5 раза темпов роста кислотности по болтушке и КЧЖ и к повышению в 1,3 раза по КЧЖ стойкости МКС при хранении по сравнению с цельнозерновой овсяной мукой. Рекомендовано в качестве тары для хранения МКС использовать герметично закрывающиеся пакеты из пищевого полиэтилена или других пищевых полимерных материалов. A comparative evaluation of the storage stability of the flour composite was prepared based on the whole oat flour and containing dried lingonberry fruits powder, and whole oat flour. The flour composite, in addition to whole oat flour, included: High-grade wheat Flour (16,5%), dry wheat gluten (3,5%), and dried lingonberry fruits powder (13,3%). Oat flour and flour composite were stored in cloth bags and polyethylene bags at a temperature of (20 ± 0,5)°C and (40 ± 1)°C. Moisture, acidity, and the acid number of fat were determined. It was revealed that the moisture content of oat flour and flour composite stored in polyethylene bags at a temperature of (40 ± 1)°C and relative humidity (65 ± 0,1)% was almost the same: 11,2 and 11,4%, respectively. When stored samples in polyethylene bags at a temperature of (40 ± 1)°C after 150 days, the acidity and acid number of fat of the flour composite increased about 1,7 and 4,2 times, respectively, the acidity and acid number of fat of whole oat flour about 2,9 and 6,3 times respectively. Also, the changes in the studied quality indicators were affected by the storage temperature and the method of product packaging. It was established that the addition of dried lingonberry fruit powder containing natural antioxidants into the flour composite, led to a decrease in the acidity growth rate of the flour composite about 1,5 times and the acid number of fat about 1,3 times during storage compared to the whole oat flour. It is recommended to use hermetically sealable bags made of food-grade polyethylene or other edible polymeric materials as a container for storing the flour composite.

Abstract Industrial robots, as mature and high-efficient equipment, have been applied to various fields, such as vehicle manufacturing, product packaging, painting, welding, and medical surgery. Most industrial robots are only operating in their own workspace, in other words, they are floor-mounted at the fixed locations. Just some industrial robots are wall-mounted on one linear rail based on the applications. Sometimes, industrial robots are ceiling-mounted on an X-Y gantry to perform upside-down manipulation tasks. The main objective of this paper is to describe the NeXus, a custom robotic system that has been designed for precision microsystem integration tasks with such a gantry. The system tasks include assembly, bonding, and 3D printing of sensor arrays, solar cells, and microrobotic prototypes. The NeXus consists of a custom designed frame, providing structural rigidity, a large overhead X-Y gantry carrying a 6 degrees of freedom industrial robot, and several other precision positioners and processes. We focus here on the design and precision evaluation of the overhead ceiling-mounted industrial robot of NeXus and its supporting frame. We first simulated the behavior of the frame using Finite Element Analysis (FEA), then experimentally evaluated the pose repeatability of the robot end-effector using three different types of sensors. Results verify that the performance objectives of the design are achieved.

"The aim of this work is to evaluate the shelf life of cow’s ricotta under MAP (Modified Atmosphere Packaging). MAP is a packaging technique commonly used in the food industry in order to control the microbial growth. After the extraction of the air present in the headspace of the package, a mixture of CO2, O2 and N2 in different percentage is usually introduced before the packaging sealing. Based on these premises, a design of experimental tests has been created in order to evaluate the effect of each process parameters. To perform these test, it is also required the creation of thermoformed trays (made with a multilayer material using PET/EVOH/PE) in which the ricotta was inserted and packaged in a modified atmosphere. After the time intervals established in the experimental program, the analysis of the MAP was carried out using a special instrument (“Oxybaby” made by Witt SpA), able to measure the quantity of gas present in the headspace of the thermoformed trays. Then a statistical analysis of the obtained results was carried out. The results showed that after 10 days the product was edible for all types of atmosphere, but at 20 and, especially, at 30 days, even in the trays wrapped with CO2, the product was not acceptable for human consumption. One of the possible solutions, in order to lengthen the shelf life of cow’s ricotta, consists in the pre-sterilization of the trays before the product packaging with a solution of H2O2."
