Classifying and mapping of vegetated area in Al- Baha region, Saudi Arabia using remote sensing shows that the medium-high density vegetation is mostly found at the central part of Al-Baha region separating the highlands and the low lands. Results obtained show that only 862.5 km2 (7.7%) Al-Baha region is covered with medium-high density vegetation found mainly at the 6-15km width horizontal central belt (at districts of Al-Mandaq, Al-Baha and south Baljurashi) along high foggy mountainous plateau. Whereas, about 65% of Al-Baha region has very low-none density vegetation mainly occurred extensively at Tihama low plain towards the Red Sea and at the north-eastern desert plain. In addition, study reveals that the highlands of Al-Baha have the most numbers of trees represents the areas of the highest elevations in the region (range between 1940 and 2366 m above sea level. This indicates that there is relationship between this elevation range with medium to high vegetation density. Similarly, the low surface temperatures are mainly located at the central belt across Al-Baha region. When overlaid with medium-high vegetation density zone with the temperature map, it was visually observed that it almost fit with lower temperature zone of less than 15°C. This also indicates that there is relationship between lower temperature with medium-high vegetation density.

AbstractThermoluminescence (TL) of monomineralic separates have been widely used in various geosciences fields in order to trace the thermal history and aid in prospecting for gold deposits. Quartz is a ubiquitous mineral in the Shihu gold deposit, which is situated in the northern part of the Taihang orogenic belt in the North China craton (NCC). The deposit is hosted by ductile-brittle faults within an Archean metamorphic core complex of the Fuping Group. This deposit is characterized by gold-bearing quartz-polymetallic sulfides and quartz veins. New TL results have been obtained for quartz, in which four type-TL glow curves were identified. The gold-bearing quartz present type III glow curves that consist of two peak glow curves at the middle and high peak temperatures with the similar TL intensity. In addition, the cross-sections of peak temperatures and TL intensity highlight the valuable area where the Au-bearing quartz present weak TL intensity and low-middle peak temperatures. Our results significantly enhance the usefulness of quartz in metallogenic studies of the North China craton and as an indicator mineral in mineral exploration of the Taihang Mountain region.

<p>One of the major challenges for the sustainable development of the federal capital territory of Abuja (Nigeria) is related to the access to safe fresh water resources. This area lies within the drought prone parts of the Sahel region. As in many regions of the world there has been growing competing demands for fresh water as a result of population growth and groundwater quality degradation. In this context, the paucity of data and in depth knowledge of aquifer features and groundwater flow makes groundwater management even more complex, with a severe impact on access to safe water resources for the local populations. To address this challenge, the purpose of the presented research is to generate information on aquifer settings and its vulnerability and on the qualitative and quantitative assessment of the available groundwater resources. Remote sensing and GIS were applied to improve the available information on groundwater resources of Abuja. Fundamental information such as recharge rate, availability and vulnerability of groundwater to pollution was determined. Aquifer vulnerability zones were delineated using the DRASTIC model by integrating layers of depth to groundwater, aquifer recharge, aquifer media, soil type, topography, impact of vadose zone and hydraulic conductivity.  The study area covers about 8000km². The elevation ranges from 62 to 843m a.s.l. with the highest elevations at the North Eastern parts and the lowest elevations at the South Western parts of the study area. There are three soil types in the area, the silty clay, silt loam and clay with clay being the predominant soil type. The five major rock types in the area include migmatite gneiss, schist and metasediment, sandstone and river alluvium, granite and quartzite. The aquifer type is phreatic and the depth to groundwater ranges from 2.8 to 21.9 m. The high recharge areas occurred mostly in highly fractured areas covered with metasedimentary rocks, migmatite gneiss and sandstones. The groundwater vulnerability zones in the study area were grouped into four classes: High, moderate, low and very low. The highly vulnerable zones are the North Eastern parts of the study area covering most parts of Bwari and parts of the municipal council areas and also the Southern parts of the study area covering parts of Kuje and Abaji. They constitute the highly fractured areas covered with silt loam soil type. The very low vulnerable zones are the North Western and Central parts covering mostly Gwgwalada and Kwali areas.  This study demonstrates that GIS and remote sensing techniques are efficient and cost effective tool for delineation of groundwater vulnerability zones. The information obtained will be used as a basis for a geochemical characterization of groundwater quality in the region with the overall goal of supporting new groundwater management plans in the region.</p><p> </p>

Abstract The Cevennes area belongs to the para-autochthonous domain of the Hercynian Belt of the French Massif Central. Three lithological series, namely: sandstone-pelite, black micaschist and gneiss-micaschist, are identified. They form an imbrication of five tectonic units which overthrust the unmetamorphosed Viganais Paleozoic units to the south and the gneissic Mamejean Unit to the north. The structural, metamorphic and magmatic evolution of the Cevennes area is characterized by three events, namely: (1) southward shearing coeval to a MP/MT metamorphism dated around 340 Ma; (2) post nappe anatexis (T<750 degrees C, P>5 kb); (3) Namurian (ca 315 Ma) E-W extensional tectonics and plutonism. The structure of the Mt-Lozere-Borne granitic complex is constrained by new AMS and gravimetric data. The plutons are the driving power of the hydrothermal convective circulations responsible for an early deposition of diffuse arsenopyrite in the thermal aureole. Gold bearing sulfides are afterwards concentrated in quartz veins along brittle normal and wrench faults around the granite. Lastly, ore bearing quartz pebbles are sedimented in the Stephanian Ales coal basin.

Geomorphology is closely related to geology, soil science, hydrology and environmental science and is being increasingly applied in planning, mining and hydrological sectors, and within environmental consultancy and tourism. The study area lies in the north-eastern part of the country and tectonically this area belongs to Surma Basin situated into Bengal Fore deep zone of Bengal Basin also known as Sylhet Trough. Under this study an attempt was made to establish the relationship between geomorphic unit and existing landuse based on remote sensing data. In the study area nine landuse categories were identified through remote sensing and GIS techniques. Two different physiographic units which are North-Eastern Terrace Land and Surma-Kushiyara Flood Plain are belongs to the study are. Moreover two surface geological units include Young Gravelly Sand and Marsh Clay and Peat are also there.
