Texture evolution during friction stir welding of stainless steel was investigated using both predictions by crystal plasticity and EBSD measurements. Two- and three-dimensional Eulerian formulations are used to model friction stir welding. Plane strain deformation is assumed in a two-dimensional model, and an initial uniform texture changes into a torsion texture with monoclinic sample symmetry after deformation. Around the tool pin, the texture strengthens, weakens and restrengthens repeatedly. It is found from a simple circular streamline model that the relative magnitudes of the deformation rate and spin along the streamlines decide textural stability. In order to consider more complicated material behaviors, such as movement along the thickness direction due to a threaded tool pin and a tool shoulder, a three-dimensional Eulerian formulation is also implemented. Materials starting under the tool shoulder travel down to the bottom, producing the longest material streamlines. Those material points are predicted to have stronger texture components than others. EBSD results are compared with the predictions.

The in situ experimentation technique in HVEM seems to be particularly suitable to clarify the processes involved in recrystallization. The material under investigation was unidirectionally cold-rolled titanium of commercial purity. The problem was approached in two different ways. The three-dimensional analysis of textures was used to describe the texture evolution during the primary recrystallization. Observations of bulk-annealed specimens or thin foils annealed in the microscope were also made in order to provide information concerning the mechanisms involved in the formation of new grains. In contrast to the already published work on titanium, this investigation takes into consideration different values of the cold-work ratio, the temperature and the annealing time.Two different models are commonly used to explain the recrystallization textures i.e. the selective grain growth model (Beck) or the oriented nucleation model (Burgers). The three-dimensional analysis of both the rolling and recrystallization textures was performed to identify the mechanismsl involved in the recrystallization of titanium.

Lath martensite is a complex hierarchical compound structure that forms during rapid cooling of carbon steels from the austenitic phase. At the smallest, i.e., ‘single crystal’ scale, individual, elongated domains, form the elemental microstructural building blocks: the name-giving laths. Several laths of nearly identical crystallographic orientation are grouped together to blocks, in which–depending on the exact material characteristics–clearly distinguishable subblocks might be observed. Several blocks with the same habit plane together form a packet of which typically three to four together finally make up the former parent austenitic grain. Here, a fully parametrized approach is presented which converts an austenitic polycrystal representation into martensitic microstructures incorporating all these details. Two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) Representative Volume Elements (RVEs) are generated based on prior austenite microstructure reconstructed from a 2D experimental martensitic microstructure. The RVEs are used for high-resolution crystal plasticity simulations with a fast spectral method-based solver and a phenomenological constitutive description. The comparison of the results obtained from the 2D experimental microstructure and the 2D RVEs reveals a high quantitative agreement. The stress and strain distributions and their characteristics change significantly if 3D microstructures are used. Further simulations are conducted to systematically investigate the influence of microstructural parameters, such as lath aspect ratio, lath volume, subblock thickness, orientation scatter, and prior austenitic grain shape on the global and local mechanical behavior. These microstructural features happen to change the local mechanical behavior, whereas the average stress–strain response is not significantly altered. Correlations between the microstructure and the plastic behavior are established.

In the field of engineered organ and drug development, three-dimensional network-structured tissue has been a long-sought goal. This paper presents a direct hydrogel extrusion process exposed to an ultrasound standing wave that aligns fibroblast cells to form a network structure. The frequency-shifted (2 MHz to 4 MHz) ultrasound actuation of a 400-micrometer square-shaped glass capillary that was continuously perfused by fibroblast cells suspended in sodium alginate generated a hydrogel string, with the fibroblasts aligned in single or quadruple streams. In the transition from the one-cell stream to the four-cell streams, the aligned fibroblast cells were continuously interconnected in the form of a branch and a junction. The ultrasound-exposed fibroblast cells displayed over 95% viability up to day 10 in culture medium without any significant difference from the unexposed fibroblast cells. This acoustofluidic method will be further applied to create a vascularized network by replacing fibroblast cells with human umbilical vein endothelial cells.

In this study both primary static recrystallization and static recovery of cold rolled bcc and fcc metals and alloys are numerically simulated using a three-dimensional model that is based on a modified cellular automaton approach. The model considers the influence of the initial deformation texture and microstructure on both static recovery and primary static recrystallization with a high spatial resolution. The cellular automat technique provides both local and statistical information about the kinetics, the morphology and the texture change during annealing. The influence of nucleation and growth can be studied in detail. The simulations are compared to experimental results obtained on fcc and bcc polycrystals.

Aluminium alloys show a great potential for lightweight constructions due to their high strength and low density but the production of this material is very energy consuming. Also the recycling of aluminium alloys, e.g. chips from the milling process, shows different challenges. Beside contamination by cooling lubricant and oxidation of the surface of the chips the melting and rolling process for new semi finish products needs a high amount of energy. TEKKAYA shows a new approach for recycling of aluminium alloy chips by an extrusion process at elevated temperatures producing different kinds of profiles. A new idea is the production of components directly out of chips using severe plastic deformation for joining of the chips similar to the accumulative roll bonding process in sheet metal forming. In a first approach aluminium alloy chips out of a milling process were uniaxial compressed with different loads inside an axisymmetric tool installed in a universal testing machine. The compressed chip disks subsequently were tested with two experiments to gain information on their stability. First experiment is a disk compression test with the disk standing on its cylindrical surface, giving information on the stability perpendicular to the compression direction. Second experiment is a stacked disk compression test with three disks to investigate the stability parallel to compression direction. During all three tests force and displacement values are recorded by the universal testing machine. These data are also processed to calculate or identify input parameters for the numerical investigations. For numerical simulation ABAQUS in conjunction with the Drucker-Prager-Cap material model, which is often used for sintering processes, seems to be a good choice. By numerical simulation of the experiments and comparison with the experiments input parameters for the material model can be identified showing good accordance. This material model will be used in future numerical investigations of an extrusion process to identify tool geometries leading to high strains inside the material and by this to an increased stability of the parts.

In order to study the influence of extrusion process on texture development of alloys, numerical simulation methods were used to simulate the round and shape extrusion process and deformation texture. Extrusion of Mg-Y magnesium alloy was carried out at the temperature of 673K with different ram speeds to verify the simulation results. Instead of using the Lagrangian FE method, the Arbitrary Lagrangian-Eulerian (ALE) method was employed in this study so that a more accurate description of the steady-state extrusion process can be achieved. By obtaining strain histories of specified material tracer particles, the coupling of deformation and crystal plasticity theory was applied to simulate the texture evolution in hot extrusion. The results showed that the texture simulation corresponded well with the experimental ones. The study proposes a method to analyze the steady-state extrusion process and texture evolution, and can be used as a useful tool in optimizing the extrusion process.
