The effects of C-substitution for part of the N content, on the pitting corrosion resistance and repassivation tendencies of duplex stainless steels (DSSs) were investigated. For this investigation, normal UNS S32205 containing N only (DSS-N) and the C-substituted DSS (DSS-NC) were fabricated. Microstructural analyses confirmed that the two DSSs had dual-phase microstructures without precipitates, and they possessed similar initial microstructure, including their grain sizes and phase fractions. Polarization and immersion tests performed in concentrated chloride solutions revealed that the DSS-NC was more resistant against stable pitting corrosion and possessed a higher repassivation tendency than the DSS-N. Furthermore, the corrosion pits initiated and propagated to a less corrosion resistant α phase. Polarization tests and corrosion depth measurements conducted in an HCl solution indicated that the DSS-NC exhibited lower galvanic corrosion rate between the α and γ phases than the DSS-N. Therefore, the growth rate of pit embryo was lowered in the DSS-NC, which shifted the potentials for the stable pit initiation and the pit extinction to the higher values.

The transient liquid phase diffusion bonding (TLP-DB) was employed to join TiNi shape memory alloy (SMA) and stainless steel (SS) with an interlayer metal of Ag-Cu eutectic metal foil. The corrosion behavior of the TLP-DB joint in Hanks solution at 37°C was investigated by electrochemical methods. The results show that the corrosion resistance of the joint is comparable to, but lower than that of base metals during the early anodic polarization, and the corrosion rate of the joint is between that of TiNi SMA and SS in the transpassive region at high potentials. The corrosion resistance of the specimens in Hanks' solution is associated with the surface quality, mircotructure and the intermetallics. Both TiNi SMA and SS display the characteristics of localized corrosion with a little pitting corrosion, while the joints mainly show the characteristics of pitting corrosion concentrated on the enrichment Cu phases.

AA7075 is extensively used in aerospace, defense, automotive applications because of its high strength to weight ratio. Issues related to fusion welding and corrosion resistance are key problems associated with these alloys. Friction stir welding is an alternative welding technique that overcomes problems associated with fusion welding. In the present investigation, preliminary studies were done on pitting corrosion behavior of AA7075 friction stir welds by adding silver along the weld joint line. Silver paste was applied along the longitudinal direction of AA7075-T6 rolled plates of 6-mm thickness and cured at 130 °C for 30 seconds. Weld joints were prepared at two different tools rotational speeds, i.e., 750 rpm and 1000 rpm, while keeping other parameters fixed. Welded joints were cut as per the required sizes to study the hardness, microstructure, and pitting corrosion resistance in various regions. It was observed that the hardness was not much affected, but pitting corrosion resistance substantially improved by trace addition of silver. In the stir zone and the thermo-mechanically affected zone, onion ring type marks were observed. Grain refinement in the stirred zone (SZ) was higher at 750 rpm compared to 1000 rpm. The increased hardness in the welds was due to grain refinement. All the observed results were correlated with microstructural features as evidenced by optical microscopy.

The corrosion process of rare earth (RE) SPCC steel and SPCC steel in CSP in 3.5% NaCl solutions was investigated by SEM, EDS, XRD and polarization curve measurements. The results show that grain refinement can be obtained, the inclusions will be formed, and the electrochemical corrosion of microscopic region is weakened and therefore the corrosion resistance of SPCC steel could be improved by addition of RE. The rust layer of RE treated steel generated in the solution is more compact, the α-FeOOH content in rust layer is higher, and the content of activated γ-FeOOH and β-FeOOH is smaller, which are helpful to protect the steel. It also shows that current densities of SPCC steel is lower and the corrosive tendency will decrease with the addition of RE, which also makes the corrosion resistance of steel improved.

Abstract Nirosta 4429 is a low-carbon, high-nitrogen version of type 316 stainless steel. The low carbon imparts intergranular corrosion resistance while the nitrogen imparts both higher strength and some increased pitting corrosion resistance. It is recommended for use as welded parts that need not or cannot be annealed after welding. This datasheet provides information on composition, physical properties, elasticity, and tensile properties. It also includes information on high temperature performance and corrosion resistance as well as forming, heat treating, and joining. Filing Code: SS-787. Producer or source: ThyssenKrupp Nirosta.

The undertaken research which is described in this paper aims at the corrosion behaviour of composite coatings in nickel matrix using as dispersed phase technical alumina with dimensions of 5 μm and their characterization from a microstructural point of view. The corrosion resistance in the saline fog of the coatings is influenced by the microstructure, the stresses developed in the layer and the roughness.
