TiN/Al2O3 functionally graded composite was fabricated by in-situ aluminothermic reduction of TiO2 in coke bed from mixtures of TiO2 powder and metal Al powder. The reaction process, phase composition, and microstructure of sample treated at 1500°C for 3h were analyzed by XRD, SEM and EPMA. The results indicated that the thermite reduction of TiO2 involves several transitional stages and its initial reaction temperature is lowered by prior reaction between Al and TiO2. EPMA analysis showed that the TiN/Al2O3 ratio in TiN/Al2O3 functionally graded material products changes gradually across the samples without distinct interface between the different layers. The microstructure of the composite changes gradually, and the size of TiN grains increases from the verge region of samples to the centre of samples. These results above were in agreement with thermodynamic analysis.

In the present work, a Ti–26Nb alloy was elaborated in situ by laser additive manufacturing (LAM) with Ti and Nb mixed powders. The alloys were annealed at temperatures ranging from 650 °C to 925 °C, and the effects of the annealing temperature on the microstructure and mechanical properties were investigated. It has been found that the microstructure of the as-deposited alloy obtained in the present conditions is characterized by columnar prior β grains with a relatively strong <001> fiber texture in the build direction. The as-deposited alloy exhibits extremely high strength, and its ultimate tensile strength and yield strength are about 799 MPa and 768 MPa, respectively. The annealing temperature has significant effects on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloys. Annealing treatment can promote the dissolution of unmelted Nb particles and eliminate the micro-segregation of Nb at the elliptical-shaped grain boundaries, while increasing the grain size of the alloy. With an increase in annealing temperature, the strength of the alloy decreases but the ductility increases. The alloy annealed at 850 °C exhibits a balance of strength and ductility.

The low thermal conductivity of Lanthanum hexaaluminate, abbreviated as LHA, combined with high structural reliability of alumina matrix ceramics attracted our attention to develop a new functionally graded layered LHA-Al2O3-composite, with a LHA and a porosity gradient along the thickness of a bulk oxide ceramic. LHA is formed by in–situ reaction during sintering of the alumina/LHA composite. The high sintering temperature required for completion of LHA formation in LHA-rich layers causes grain growth and a degradation of mechanical strength in alumina-rich layers. Therefore, microwave hybrid heating was investigated as a method to enhance the reaction rate without excessive grain growth. Comparison of conventionally and microwave assisted sintered homogenous composite ceramics with 20–80 volume percent LHA showed that utilization of microwave heating could enhance the solid–state reaction and densification in samples containing more than 20 volume percent LHA. Enhanced microwave absorption in LHA rich layers assisted the sintering of a functionally graded composite at lower temperatures, enabling LHA formation without any abnormal grain growth in alumina rich layers.
