Merauke is located in the eastern part of Indonesia that is rich of natural and cultural resources  potential for tourism. Tourism could be a solution to reduce poverty, especially through community-based tourism. Communities reap economic benefits from tourism industry by the increase of local income, hence the social welfare. On the contrary, poor management may lead the emerging Merauke tourism into environmental ecosystem damage. Such a threat to environmental sustainability outweighs any economic benefits because future generation will suffer from the inherited damaged environment. This article will discuss Merauke community participation in fostering the development of sustainable tourism through community-based tourism, that is maintaining sustainability of the environment and ecosystem while considering local communities sociocultural conditions. In doing so, this study uses a descriptive-qualitative approach. Data was collected from document tracking and interviews with Merauke Regional Government, WWF activists, and community leaders. The findings indicated that local communities supported Merauke tourism by developing entrepreneurship in tourism industry, increasing community social control in protecting the environment and enhancing the role of local customary leaders in supporting the tourism development.

Palavras-chave: Concessão de serviços ecoturísticos, Gestão de Unidades de Conservação, Turismo de Base Comunitária VIABILITY OF COMMUNITY BASED TOURISM IN THE SERRA DO CIPÓ NATIONAL PARK. IS IT POSSIBLE?Abstract: The budget allocated by the Brazilian Government to the Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation – ICMBio – to manage more than 300 Federal Conservation Units (UC) is not enough to achieve excellence in the management of such areas. This  has posed increasing challenges for the socio-economic-environmental sustainability of protected areas. One of the strategies adopted by ICMBio in the face of the challenge of managing UCs is the concession of tourism services by the private sector. On the other hand, tourism activity has its object of consumption in the geographic space, and for it to take place, territories and networks are appropriated, a situation that, if not well planned, can lead to increased privileges to higher class levels in detriment of lower class levels of the local communities, which bears the social, environmental and financial burden. Although the studies available in the literature demonstrate the importance of Community Based Tourism – TBC as environmental justice, there is a lack of data on the economic sustainability bias of such initiatives. The article sought, through a case study, to present data that demonstrate the economic viability of the TBC to enrich the debate on this possibility of managerial arrangement. Keywords: Conservation Units management; Community-based tourism, Concession of ecotourism services. Invasive species are among the greatest challenges to environmental sustainability and agricultural productivity in the world. One of the most promising approaches to managing invasive species is voluntary citizen stewardship. However, in order for control measures to be effective, private citizens often need to make sustained and sometimes burdensome commitments. Community-Based Control of Invasive Species is based on five years of research by leading scholars in natural resource and human behavioural sciences, which involved government and citizen groups in Australia and the United States. It examines questions including, 'how can citizens be engaged in voluntarily managing invasive species?', 'what communication strategies will ensure good motivation and coordination?' and 'how can governing bodies support citizens in their efforts?'. With chapters on institutional frameworks, changing governance, systems thinking, organisational learning, engagement, communication and behavioural change, this book will be a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners involved in natural resources management.

This paper interrogates the intersection between sustainable tourism and community-based tourism (CBT). It is a conceptual paper that unpacks the conceptualization of tourism and traces the emergence of sustainable tourism as one of the responses to conventional/mass tourism. The history of conventional tourism shows that, like any form of tourism, it has both positive and negative impacts on destinations. It is against this backdrop that CBT emerged. To achieve its aim, this article examined the main principles and attributes of CBT in CBT manuals and handbooks, focusing on two key concepts - sustainability and the environment. This examination revealed a significant mismatch in the conception of sustainability, while it is a fundamental requirement in tourism to tackle its negative environmental impacts. Environmental sustainability is considered more implicit in CBT, while it is often less regarded in conventional/mass tourism. We argue that the sustainability of tourism should be an intrinsic and universal principle of all forms of tourism that governments should enforce. The fact that conventional tourism produces most of the environmental damage, it is for this reason that it should elevate its role to become a solid promoter of sustainable measures for environmentally-friendly and sustainability-friendly practices instead.

From 2010 to 2016 the Think&EatGreen@School project worked to create healthy and sustainable school food systems in the Vancouver School Board.  Using models of Community-Engaged Scholarship and Community-Based Action Research, we implemented diverse programmatic and monitoring activities to provide students and teachers with hands-on food cycle education, in order to influence policy, and to encourage university students to engage actively with the food system. Our focus was on transformation of local school food systems as a context-specific means to address serious global issues related to food security, health and environmental sustainability. This paper provides a synthesis of the project including the context that led to its inception, its overarching goals, methodological framework and areas of impact.  Key learnings from this project highlight the need for continued work to integrate research, teaching and action on global food security, environmental and public health challenges and to build connections to create healthy, sustainable school food systems.
