There is varied natural landscape in Taiwan. Erosion and sediment control engineering used to be a major strategy for watershed management and planning but ecological conservation in natural environments and industrial development, as well as the development of a sustainable watershed, have become priorities. This study established the factors that are used for landscape assessment for stream regulation works and their weights using a questionnaire survey of experts with different professional backgrounds in order to determine a method to assess the landscape. The factors, “texture and form”, “color”, and “ecology” were used to assess scenic beauty. The analytic hierarchy process (AHP) and the analytic network process (ANP) were used initially and an expert questionnaire was used to determine the criteria and weights for landscape assessment for watershed stream regulation works. The questionnaire results showed that “integration with natural environment” was the most important factor for the assessment of landscape aesthetics for watershed stream regulation works, followed by “availability of greening and vegetation space”. To preserve scenic beauty after watershed stream regulation works, an expert landscape assessment was undertaken beforehand. This study established a means to integrate the design of engineering structures with the natural landscape. Landscape assessments, strategies for architecture, and landscape design were combined to give an aesthetic solution for soil and water conservation engineering in Taiwan.

Background: Noise pollution or noise is an unwanted sound which is disturbing to human beings.However small or soft the sound, if it is undesirable it is considered as noise. Noise induced hearingloss is a sensorineural hearing loss that is commonly encountered second to presbycusis. Purpose: Toknow the effect of traffic noise exposure on hearing impairment to the employees of the Parking DistrictCompany of the Denpasar city and to improve diagnostic detection on hearing impairment caused bynoise. Method: A cross sectional study was conducted at the Parking District Company office. Thepopulations of this study were the employees of the Parking District Company. Samples of this study were the employees who were exposed to traffic noise and control samples were an employee who was unexposed. Samples were selected by simple random sampling. Results: From 40 parking attendants,27 persons (67.5%) aged above 35 years old. The parking attendants who had been working for ten to fifteen years were 36 persons (90%) and no history using ear protection when working. Seven persons(17.5%) had referred DPOAE upon examination with increase hearing threshold on audiogram result.In this study the parking attendants who had hearing deficit induced by noise were 7 persons (17.5%)and only one person (2.5%) in control group. There was a statistically significant effect of traffic noiseto hearing function deficit (p<0.05). Conclusion: Traffic noise has effect in hearing function deficit onthe parking attendants.ORLI Vol. 40 No. 2 Tahun 2010Key words: NIHL, parking attendant, audiometry, DPOAE.

The problems of modern geological ecology associated with the study of pollution of sediments of water bodies by heavy metals are considered. The Volga River basin is quite heterogeneous, both in geomorphological and hydrological terms, and in thechnogenical development and usage. A fourrank taxonomy is presented for the selection of sites for monitoring, based on a combination of natural, landscape, climatic and thechnogenical factors. To the largest – the highest taxon – sites of the Ist category – bowls of reservoirs with the slopes and the urban zones, industrial and agricultural structures located within them are carried. Within these areas are allocated to smaller taxa, areas category IInd are the industrial and urban zones, areas category IIIrd are the small rivers without significant contamination and areas category IVth to conduct special observations. The examples of special observations in the study of the annual migration of heavy metals in the system «bottom sediments – water column» on the Ivankovo reservoir are highlighted. The investigations were carried out under the conditions of the standard flow rate for this reservoir and in the conditions of slow water exchange.

Abstract Road traffic noise needs to be reduced, because traffic volume is increasing every year. The noise generated from a tire is becoming one of the dominant sources in the total traffic noise because the engine noise is constantly being reduced by the vehicle manufacturers. Although the acoustic intensity measurement technology has been enhanced by the recent developments in digital measurement techniques, repetitive measurements are necessary to find effective ways for noise control. Hence, a simulation method to predict generated noise is required to replace the time-consuming experiments. The boundary element method (BEM) is applied to predict the acoustic radiation caused by the vibration of a tire sidewall and a tire noise prediction system is developed. The BEM requires the geometry and the modal characteristics of a tire which are provided by an experiment or the finite element method (FEM). Since the finite element procedure is applied to the prediction of modal characteristics in a tire noise prediction system, the acoustic pressure can be predicted without any measurements. Furthermore, the acoustic contribution analysis obtained from the post-processing of the predicted results is very helpful to know where and how the design change affects the acoustic radiation. The predictability of this system is verified by measurements and the acoustic contribution analysis is applied to tire noise control.

Abstract The sound radiating from rolling tires is the most important source of traffic noise in urban regions. In this contribution a detailed finite element approach for the dynamics of tire/road systems is presented with emphasis on rolling noise prediction. The analysis is split into sequential steps, namely, the nonlinear analysis of the stationary rolling problem within an arbitrary Lagrangian Eulerian framework, and a subsequent analysis of the transient dynamic response due to the excitation caused by road surface roughness. Here, a modal superposition approach is employed using complex eigenvalue analysis. Finally, the sound radiation analysis of the rolling tire/road system is performed.

Residential architecture has one of the most conservative styles based on its specifics. However, today this type of architecture seeks to actively respond to changes in the modern world. These changes are caused by multiple factors, among them are: technological and information progress; lack of resources and environmental pollution; military conflicts and population migration etc. The purpose of this article is to summarize the experience of the Department of Architectural Environment of Lviv Polytechnic National University over housing issues and outline the methodological principles of innovation in designing both individual houses and the architectural environment of residential formations. While writing this article, we analyzed the 15-year experience of Architectural Environment's Department diploma projects. The unique feature of these projects is the priority on the design of the environment. The evolution of diploma project topics is revealed on multiple distinctive examples such as the reconstruction of old buildings in Lviv and the construction of prefabricated homes and container-type housing. Futuristic settlements are represented in projects such as “The Ocean Settlements” and “Prykarpatsk - the City of Future”. Research projects were developed to study current trends in housing design and the impact of innovative technologies on planning decisions. These projects discoursed the protection of housing from traffic noise and issues related to environmental preservation. Innovative architectural ideas of future housing, developed by students in these projects, are based on a combination of aesthetic, technical, and social components of architecture. The conclusion indicates that when educating future architects, it is important to teach them the basics of the craft, as well as the ability to defend their innovative ideas. The emphasis is placed on the importance of educating the architect's personal responsibility for their own design solutions. It is stated that professional motivation and the ability to constantly renew previously acquired knowledge and skills will be among the main tasks in training future architects.
