Ultrasound extraction of phenolic compounds from coconut (Cocos nucifera) shell powder

This study aims to evaluate the efficacy of two methods (agitation and ultra-sound) for extracting phenolic compounds from 15 native plants. Plant species collected in the Dehesa of Extremadura were used. The antioxidant, antihypertensive and antimicrobial activity of the phenolic extracts was investigated. Significantly different results were obtained when comparing the two extraction methods, with the highest concentrations of phenolic compounds found for ultrasound extraction. In addition, the extracts obtained for Cistus albidus, Cistus salviifolius, Rubus ulmifolius and Quercus ilex showed the highest concentrations of phenolic compounds. The antioxidant activity was higher in the extracts of Cistus and Q. ilex obtained by ultrasound, as was the antihypertensive activity. Antimicrobial activity was also higher in the extracts obtained by ultrasound from C. salviifolius and Q. ilex plants against bacteria and from Cistus ladanifer against yeasts. Therefore, it can be concluded that, with the ultrasound extraction of phenolic compounds from C. ladanifer, C. albidus and Q. ilex plants, it is possible to obtain extracts with important functional properties, so they could be studied for their use in food with the aim of obtaining healthy and safe products, favouring the sustainability of the environment of the Dehesa Extremeña.

The paper provides information about histochemical staining reactions in leaves and embryos of 'Coqueiro Anão' (Cocos nucifera). It was compared in vitro coconut and autotrophic palm leaves. Reactions for insoluble polysaccharides and acidic compounds, protein, extractable lipids, lignin and other classes of compounds were tested using histochemical tests. None sample gave positive reaction for lignin and phenolic compounds. All the samples gave positive reaction for protein, starch and insoluble polysaccharides while acidic compounds were positive only in in vitro leaves. Both in vitro and autotrophic leaves gave positive reaction for lipids showing presence of cuticle even in in vitro leaves. Only autotrophic palm leaves showed idioblasts containing calcium oxalate crystals.

The Box-Behnken design was used to investigate the effect of three independent variables – time, temperature and solvent-to-solid ratio on the responses of total phenolics, total flavonoids, 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) scavenging activity and cupric ion reducing antioxidant capacity (CUPRAC) of date fruit methanolic extracts. Response surface analysis showed that the optimal ultrasound extraction parameters that maximized the responses were 30 min, 298 K and 74.4 ml/g. Under optimum conditions, UHPLC-DAD-MS/MS was used to tentatively characterize 11 phenolic compounds. The experimental values for the quantification of phenolic compounds and antioxidant activities are in accordance with the predicted values, indicating the suitability of the model and the success of response surface methodology in optimizing the ultrasound extraction conditions.

Abstract Recently, natural filler reinforced polymer composites are important materials for various engineering applications. Hence, this present work focuses on utilization of coconut shell powder (CSP) as a filler in vinyl ester (VE) resin to produce particulate composite specimens. The particulate composite plates with various weights or filler contents from 5 to 30 wt% were fabricated, using compression molding technique. The fabricated composites were subjected to tensile, flexural, impact, hardness, heat deflection and swelling behavior tests to obtain their corresponding material properties. Energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) analysis was carried out on the coconut shell powder/vinyl ester (CSP/VE) composite specimens to investigate into the presence of their elements, in addition to the aforementioned tests. From the experimental results obtained, it was observed that the optimum mechanical properties of CSP/VE composites were obtained at 15 wt% of filler content, having tensile, flexural and impact strengths of 38.70, 105.13 MPa and 33.04 kJ/m2, respectively. Also, the heat deflection temperature (HDT) results varied from 158 (0 wt%, neat VE resin) to 171 oC along various percentages of filler contents. Lastly, the morphological study/analysis of the fractured CSP/VE composite specimens was conducted by using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) to confirm the experimental data/results obtained. It was evident that CSP/VE composite structures could be potential substitutes for some synthetic composites. Also, they are suitable for various engineering applications in aerospace, electrical/electronics and automobile industries, based on their properties.
