Truck’s climbing performance is an important consideration in traffic safety, efficiency, and highway geometric design. With the infrastructure development in high-altitude area in China, more attention needs to be paid on truck’s climbing performance in such area. In this article, truck’s climbing speed in high-altitude area was examined through field tests on different grade sections at different altitudes. Truck’s speed-distance curves were built at different altitudes and the impact of altitude on truck’s climbing speed was explored based on the test results. It was shown that, within the altitude range of 3000~5000m, altitude had an obvious influence on test truck’s decelerating and accelerating performance. Truck’s speed decreased faster on steep grades and increased slower on gentle grades with the increase of the altitude. Also, the stable speed that test truck could maintain on a certain grade was lower at a higher altitude. In addition, test truck’s theoretical speed-distance curves at the sea level were estimated through truck’s dynamic model. Compared with the theoretical crawl speed, a negative effect of altitude change (from 0 to the altitude above 3000 m) was found on truck’s climbing performance.

Driving fatigue is one of the main causes of traffic accidents. Thus, to prevent traffic accidents and ensure traffic safety, the properties of driving fatigue at the wheel must be determined. The Qinghai–Tibet Plateau in China is known for its high elevation, causing hypoxia, and presence of severely cold areas; all these easily lead to fatigue during driving. This, in turn, seriously affects the traffic safety on the high-altitude highway. Therefore, the factors leading to driving fatigue and the influence of high-altitude on driving fatigue affecting the driver must be further studied. In this study, we classified and quantified driving fatigue according to the driving fatigue degree. We determined three levels of driving fatigues (i.e., mild, moderate, and severe fatigues) to present their influence on drivers. Our study shows that in this high-altitude area, drivers became fatigued within a significantly shorter time.

Abstract. In order to study on the hydrometric methods in the high-altitude area, and learn more about the hydrological mechanism in the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, a series of observation research were carried out in the Niyang River watershed, a tributary of the Yarlung Zangbo River. The glacier recession and the runoff variation which conducted by the climate change asked people to study more on the plateau hydrology, where is extremely lack of the hydrological monitoring and dataset in the past due to the high altitude and the cold environment. In this study, 4 basins with the areas of 182, 216, 243, 213 km2 was equipped with different types of hydrometric instruments, so that the precipitation (rainfall and snow), water level, flow speed and the meteorological elements could be measured. In addition, the soil and water in the watershed were sampled at the altitude from 3667 to 6140 m, which could be used to analyze the runoff composition. With the equipment, the applicability of the hydrometric methods and instruments were discussed according to the monitoring situation. With the samples' analysis results (including the δD, δ18O, and the chemical components), the runoff composition characteristics were analyzed. This research is funded by the NSFC project 91647111 and 91647203, which are included in the Runoff Change and its Adaptive Management in the Major Rivers in Southwestern China Major Research Plan.

Gloydius strauchi is a venomous pit viper, which is known from Sichuan, Eastern Xizang, Qinghai, Ningxia, and Shaanxi provinces. Here I report a new, genetically verified record of G. strauchi from a high-altitude area of Dêgê County, Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, and provide information on a mild envenomation case of that species’ bite.

The Wufo Basin at the margin of the northeastern Tibet Plateau connects the upstream reaches of the Yellow River with the lowland catchment downstream, and the fluvial terrace sequence in this basin provides crucial clues to understand the evolution history of the Yellow River drainage system in relation to the uplift and outgrowth of the Tibetan Plateau. Using field survey and analysis of Digital Elevation Model/Google Earth imagery, we found at least eight Yellow River terraces in this area. The overlying loess of the highest terrace was dated at 1.2 Ma based on paleomagnetic stratigraphy (two normal and two reversal polarities) and the loess-paleosol sequence (12 loess-paleosol cycles). This terrace shows the connections of drainage parts in and outside the Tibetan Plateau through its NE margin. In addition, we review the previously published data on the Yellow River terraces and ancient large lakes in the basins. Based on our new data and previous researches, we conclude that the modern Yellow River, with headwaters in the Tibet Plateau and debouching in the Bohai Sea, should date from at least 1.2 Ma. Ancient large lakes (such as the Hetao and Sanmen Lakes) developed as exorheic systems and flowed through the modern Yellow River at that time.

President Park faced a leadership crisis after revelations that she relied on a confidant with no official position for key decision-making in state affairs. Heavy industry met with serious financial difficulties, and a strong anti-corruption law was enacted. North Korea tested more nuclear weapons and missiles. Controversy over the deployment of Terminal High Altitude Area Defense strained South Korea’s relations with China.
