Tungsten carbide which is a hard and brittle material was ground by cast-iron bonded diamond wheel with ELID (Electrolytic In-Process Dressing) technique, for the purpose of getting high efficiency, super-precision machining. Three kinds of cast-iron bonded diamond wheels with different grain size were adopted to get different grinding efficiency and surface quality of workpieces. The grinding properties of cast-iron bonded grinding wheels with different grain size and the ground surface quality of tungsten carbide are discussed in this paper. The experiment results indicate that, under the same feeding amount, the grinding efficiency of the wheel with bigger grain size is higher, and it could make the dimension accuracy of the workpiece controllable, but the wheel with smaller grain size could get better ground surface quality. The two grinding phases are decided by the ratio between the size of abrasive grain and the thickness of the oxide layer on the grinding wheel.

Drilling carbon fiber reinforced plastics and titanium (CFRP/Ti) stacks is one of the most important activities in aircraft assembly. It is favorable to use different drilling parameters for each layer due to their dissimilar machining properties. However, large aircraft parts with changing profiles lead to variation of thickness along the profiles, which makes it challenging to adapt the cutting parameters for different materials being drilled. This paper proposes a force sensorless method based on cutting force observer for monitoring the thrust force and identifying the drilling material during the drilling process. The cutting force observer, which is the combination of an adaptive disturbance observer and friction force model, is used to estimate the thrust force. An in-process algorithm is developed to monitor the variation of the thrust force for detecting the stack interface between the CFRP and titanium materials. Robotic orbital drilling experiments have been conducted on CFRP/Ti stacks. The estimate error of the cutting force observer was less than 13%, and the stack interface was detected in 0.25 s (or 0.05 mm) before or after the tool transited it. The results show that the proposed method can successfully detect the CFRP/Ti stack interface for the cutting parameters adaptation.

Dual heat treatment (DHT) effect is analyzed using the machining of Al6061-T6 alloy, a readily available material for quickly finding the machining properties. The heat treatments are conducted twice over the specimen by the furnace heating before processing through CNC machining. The HSS and WC milling cutters are preferred for the diameter of 10 mm for the reviewed rotational speeds of 2000 rpm and 4000 rpm, and the constant depth of cut of 0.5 mm is chosen based on various reviews. Worthy roughness could be provided mostly by the influence of feed rates preferred here as 0.05 mm/rev and 0.1 mm/rev. The influencing factors are identified by the Taguchi, genetic algorithm (GA), and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) techniques and compared within it. The simulation finding also helps to clarify the relationship between influenced machining constraints and roughness outcomes of this project. The average values of heat treated and nonheat treated Al6061-T6 are compared and it is to be evaluated that 41% improvement is obtained with the lower surface roughness of 1.78975 µm and it shows good surface finish with the help of dual heat treatment process.

Material removed by mechanical process inevitably causes surface or subsurface damage containing cracks, plastic scratch, residual stress or dislocations. In nano-abrasive jet polishing (NAJP) the material is removed by chemical impact reaction. The chemical impact reaction is validated by contrast experiment with traditional lap polishing process in which the material is mainly removed through mechanical process. Experiment results show the dependence of the abrasive particles on the choice of materials. Even if the abrasive particle and the workpiece are composed of similar components, the machining properties are remarkably different due to slight differences in their physical properties or crystallography etc. Plastic scratches on the sample which was polished by the traditional mechanical process are completely removed by NAJP process, and the surface root-square-mean roughness has decreased from 1.403nm to 0.611nm. The NAJP process will become a promising method for ultra precision machining method for ultrasmooth optical surface.
