Aluminium is a metal of high economic importance for the European Union (EU), presenting unique properties (e.g., light weight and high corrosion resistance) and with applications in important sectors (e.g., transportation, construction and packaging). It is also known for its high recyclability potential, but relevant losses occur in its life cycle, compromising the amount of aluminium available for secondary production. A novel methodology that allows the identification of these losses and their impact on the aluminium flows in society is the MaTrace model. The objective of this article is to perform a dMFA of the secondary production of aluminium in the EU technosphere using the modified version of MaTrace, in order to estimate flows of the metal embedded in 12 product categories. Twelve scenarios were built in order to assess the impact of changes in policies, demand and technology. The flows were forecasted for a period of 25 years, starting in 2018. The results of the baseline scenario show that after 25 years, 24% of the initial material remains in use, 4% is hoarded by users, 10% has been exported and 61% has been physically lost. The main contributor to the losses is the non-selective collection of end-of-life products. The results of the different scenarios show that by increasing the collection-to-recycling rates of the 12 product categories, the aluminium that stays in use increase up to 32.8%, reaffirming that one way to keep the material in use is to improve the collection-to-recycling schemes in the EU.

Construction and demolition waste (CDW) management in developing countries is a global concern. The analysis of scenarios and the implementation of life cycle assessment (LCA) support decision-makers in introducing integrated CDW management systems. This paper introduces the application of an LCA in La Paz (Bolivia), where CDW is mainly dumped in open areas. The aim of the research is to evaluate the benefits of inert CDW recycling in function of the selective collection rate, defined as the amount of waste (%wt.) sorted at the source in relation to the total waste amount produced, and the distances from the CDW generation to the material recycling facility. The outcomes of the research suggest that increasing the selective collection rates (5% to 99%) spread the importance of transportation distances planning since it affects the magnitude of the environmental impacts (1.05 tCO2-eq to 20.7 tCO2-eq per km traveled). Transportation limits have been found to be lower than about 40 km in order to make recycling beneficial for all environmental impacts and for all selective collection rate, with the eutrophication potential as the limiting indicator. The theoretical analysis suggests implementing LCA with primary data and involving statistics related to the transportation of virgin materials avoided thanks to recycling. The outcomes of the research support the implementation of CDW recycling in developing countries since it has been found that material recovery is always beneficial.

The particle size distribution of airborne bacterial conglomerates is an important factor in calculating possible spread distances of the bacteria over the air. Therefore, a size-selective collection system based on an emission impinger was developed to compare the distribution of total bacteria and staphylococci in particle fractions PM2.5, PM10 and total dust in the emission of two fattening pig stables. Mean emissions of 7.2 × 104 cfu/m³ total bacteria, 6.1 × 104 cfu/m³ staphylococci and 2.8 × 106 cells/m3 measured. About 30% of total bacteria and staphylococci were found in the PM2.5 particle size fraction and about 60% in PM10. The average dust distribution was 80% PM10 and 60% PM2.5. The results show that airborne bacteria from fattening pig units mainly occur on larger particles and do not correlate with dust fractions. The found conditions should be considered in future dispersion modelling.

The paper presents the results of research into the influence of calcareous fly ash (CFA) processing methods on the rheological properties of mortars. The study consisted of a comparison of changes of the rheological properties (plastic viscosity and yield value) of the mortars during 90 minutes when CFA, unprocessed or processed by grinding, grain separation, or selective collection from the filter, was used as a substitute for a part of the cement. The results show that processing of CFA decreases its negative influence on the rheological properties; the efficient methods are separation or grinding, while the effect of selective collection is almost insignificant.

Purpose:  This article presentes the results of an in-depth and contextualized study on the problems in the commercialization of glass containers sent to the selective collection system of the city of Londrina-PR, Brazil.Design: The methodological strategy was the triangulation of sources of evidence desiring to understand the situational characteristics, as well as the operational and environmental challenges faced by the local actors involved, especially the cooperatives. Quantitative and qualitative study case using primary and secondary data collection from multistakeholders.Findings: The data collected here allow us to conclude that vitreous materials have demonstrated difficult commercialization processes and are among those materials that are economically less interesting for cooperatives, intensifying the high social fragility of cooperates.Practical implications: The search for solutions to environmental and economic problems caused by the high generation of municipal solid waste in Brazil still have strong deficiencies in methodologies and technologies. Social implications:  How the reverse logistics of vitreous packaging is operationalized has increased public financing with this type of material, since the sales price obtained by waste pickers does not corroborate the economic support of cooperative enterprises.Originality/value: This study allows to advance in the explanation and description of the way of structuring the reverse chain of vitreous packaging, especially in medium-sized municipalities in the inland.Keywords: post-consumption; packaging; glass; recycling; selective collection
