The municipality of Marituba, Metropolitan Region of Belém - RMB, has suffered environmental impacts due to irregularities in the landfill operation implemented in 2015, which triggered social impacts perceived by all the population, including neighboring municipalities, such as Ananindeua and Belém Protests were carried out by the Movement Outside the Garbage that is constituted by the dwellings of the surrounding neighborhoods to the place where the embankment is located, of owners of commercial activities linked to the tourism and Non Governmental Organizations that interrupted several times the transit of the main route that interconnects the seven municipalities of the RMB and the entrance of the embankment, in order to draw the attention of the municipal public power to the problems that the population would have been facing ever since. From this, the following questions arose: What social impacts would people be making in these protests? Would such problems be directly related to the activities carried out in the landfill? And finally, what are the actions of the public authority and the company that manages the enterprise in the management of these social impacts? The relevance of this study concerns not only the identification of social impacts considering the fragility of this approach in the Environmental Impact Studies and concomitantly in the Reports of Environmental Impacts, but also, from the point of view of the debate about the licensing process of enterprises of this nature and employment and the need for the joint use of environmental and urban policy instruments, considering that RMB municipalities have not yet used sustainable alternatives for the reduction of solid waste produced in their territories, as well as the reduction of environmental impacts caused by dumps , and in the case of Marituba, of the landfill that operates outside the standards established by the Brazilian Association of Technical Standards - ABNT, which is responsible for the management and treatment of solid waste and the National Policy on Solid Waste - PNRSN.

This paper proposes the selective collection and recycling as alternative ways to promote the social inclusion in Brazil and help the country to eradicate extreme poverty and misery and achieve the first of the Millennium Development Goals (MDG1) of the UN. This work is based on the data from a Brazilian metropolitan city of Campinas and is extended to Brazil. The results show that the municipality of Campinas collects monthly 8000 tons of recyclables which if recycled can avail jobs to nearly 13,000 waste collectors with a minimum national salary of R$ 622/month or alternatively can create 40,280 Family Grants of R$ 200/month. In Brazil, the collected recyclables potential is about 2.4 million tons per month which can avail jobs to 2,350945 waste collectors or alternatively create about 7.3 millions Family Grants.

Trentino (an Italian Province located in the northern part of the country) is equipped with a management system of municipal solid waste collection at the forefront. Among the most positive aspects, there is a great ability for waste separation at the source and a consequent low production of residual municipal solid waste for disposal. Latest data show a gross efficiency of selective collection that has recently reached 80%, one of the highest values in Italy. This study analyzed the “Trentino system” to identify the main elements that have been at the base of the current efficient model. This provided an opportunity to propose a selective collection quality index (SCQI), including collection efficiency for each fraction, method of collection, quality of the collected materials, presence of the punctual tariff and tourist incidence. A period relevant for the transition of the collection system to the recent one was chosen for the demonstrative adoption of the proposed indicators in order to determine the potential of the index adoption. Results of the analysis of this case study were obtained in a quantitative form thanks to the sub-parameters that characterize the proposed index. This allowed selected collection decision makers to focus intently on a territory to find criticalities to be solved. For instance, the use of the index and its sub-indicators in the case of Trentino identified and comparatively quantified the local problems resulting from the presence of a large museum in a small town, tourism peaks in some valleys, and a delay in the punctual tariff adoption. The index has been proposed with the aim to make available an integrated tool to analyze other areas in Italy and abroad.

Municipal solid waste management has been a topic of interest of several authors over time, in particular the implementation and maintenance of waste collection programmes. Initially, pioneering studies focused on the economic aspects of the provided services. However, many authors later argued the costs of providing solid waste collection services should also be influenced by socio-economic and behavioural factors, exogenous to the municipalities. The present study will be developed in this context, looking, more broadly, to explain the factors influencing the decision-making of the Portuguese municipalities in implementing and maintaining programs of selective collection of solid waste, considering the economic, financial, technological and sociodemographic factors. The results show that, indeed as presented by several authors before, economic factors aren’t the only determinants that influence municipal costs concerning these services, as demographic, geographic and technological factors must be taken into account. Moreover, the enforced legislation also impacts the municipal costs due to municipalities being obliged to contribute to the success of these collection programs in order to fulfil the waste recovery targets. This implies that the costs of these services and the inherent infrastructures are usually financed by its citizens in the form of utilization taxes and also the state.

The respective work is an investigation on practices of urban solid waste management in the city of Fernandes Pinheiro-PR, with the objective of understanding the problems related to the disposal and disposal of solid waste with the intention of promoting new projects that favor citizens with guidance and marketing of recyclable waste. Having projects in partnership with the population to solve the problems of incorrect waste disposal and encourage selective collection, reuse and recycling are guidelines provided for in the National Solid Waste Policy (PNRS). Through the elaboration of a diagnosis of the situation of solid waste in the municipality and documentary analysis, among these, practices carried out by the public authorities were verified and the actions are being carried out, still potentiating good projects and proposing continuous improvement actions along with the adoption of new problem-oriented practices.

Since Brazil is one of the countries which generate more waste in the world and that organic waste represents more than half of this amount, this article aimed to evaluate the life cycle of solid waste in the City Market of Caucaia / CE, carrying out a study with a qualitative and quantitative approach, a descriptive nature and a bibliographic and documentary basis. Using two questionnaires, workes were interviewed, totaling 10 individuals. These individuals were asked about the generation, collection and destination of the waste produced. To understand the management of waste produced in the market, it was decided to interview the city hall technician responsible for the area. Most marketers deposit their waste in the open, do not know the final destination or ways of treating this waste and do not have access to selective collection. More than half of the waste produced has organic origin, however, there are wastes that need specific destination, such as batteries and electronics. Waste management is not very efficient and the city has no strategies. The results obtained show that the management and management of waste from Caucaia / CE still need to undergo some changes, mainly in relation to the destination and treatment of these, especially organic ones.

The accumulation of solid waste causes environmental deterioration and implications for quality of life, so selective collection emerges as an alternative to reduce this impact. The objective of this study was to evaluate the socioeconomic, demographic and work profiles of waste pickers in Ilha Solteira, São Paulo and to analyze the importance of this practice for subsistence and environmental preservation. For this, 22 waste pickers were interviewed and information was collected from the City Hall.
