Scientific assessment of harmful interactions of chemicals over the entire reproductive cycle are divided into three segments based on the period: from premating and mating to implantation (I), from implantation to major organogenesis (II), and late pregnancy and postnatal development (III). We combined the segments I and II to assessPlathymenia reticulataaqueous extract safety. In order to investigate reproductive toxicity (segment I), pregnant rats received orally 0.5 or 1.0 g/kg of extract, daily, during 18 days. These concentrations were determined by a preliminaryin vitroLD50 test in CHO-k1 cells. A control group received deionized water. The offspring was removed at the 19th day, by caesarean, and a teratology study (segment II) was carried out. The corpora lutea, implants, resorptions, live, and dead fetuses were then counted. Placenta and fetuses were weighted. External and visceral morphology were provided by the fixation of fetuses in Bouin, whereas skeletal analysis was carried out on the diaphanizated ones. The increase in the weights of placenta and fetuses was the only abnormality observed. Since there was no sign of alteration on reproduction parameters at our experimental conditions, we conclude thatP. reticulataaqueous extract is safe at 0.5 to 1.0 g/kg and is not considered teratogenic.

Introduction: Contraction of the uterus is an important physiological phenomenon that determines the functionality of the uterus for pregnancy and abortion. Curcuma longa, a member of the ginger family (Zingiberracaeae) has been used in traditional medicine because of its various therapeutic properties. Curcuma longa is believed to be beneficial to the female reproductive system by preventing unwanted uterine activity in early pregnancy or treat preterm labour. There are however, no scientific facts verifying the effects on the uterus to support its folklore use as tocolytic agent. The aim of this study was to determine the effects of aqueous extract of Curcuma longa rhizome and its possible mechanism of action on uterine contraction. Methods: The Isolated longitudinal uterine strips were dissected from non-pregnant rats, mounted vertically in an organ bath chamber, and exposed to the aqueous extract of Curcuma longa rhizome at a concentration of 25 - 200 mg/ml. The effects of the extract at a concentration of 50 mg/ml on spontaneous and oxytocin-induced (10 nmol/L) contractions were investigated. Results: The results of the study revealed that the extract significantly (p < 0.05) inhibited both spontaneous and oxytocin-induced uterine contractions (n = 10). The extract also inhibited oxytocin-induced contraction in the absence of exogenous calcium (n = 10). Significance: The result of this research has shown that Curcurma longa extract possesses or exerts tocolytic effect that delays uterine contraction in rats and this finding justify its folklore uses in traditional medicine to prevent unwanted uterine activity in early pregnancy or treat preterm labour.

A comparative study was designed to evaluate the in vitro antidiabetic activity from the aqueous extract of dried pericarp of Prunus amygdalus Bail and ethanolic extract of dried flower of Hibiscus rosa-sinensis L. against the standard Acarbose.The aqueous extract of P. amygdalus and ethanolic extract of H. rosa-sinensis were extracted by the continuous hot extraction process.The qualitative phytochemical screening of aqueous extract and ethanolic extract reveals the presence of phytosterols, phenols, carbohydrates, flavanoids, saponins, amino acids and alkaloids, phenol, tannins, cardiac glycoside, saponin and flavonoids, respectively. In vitro pharmacological activity of P. amygdalus and H.rosa-sinensis were performed and compared by α-amylase inhibition assay method. The percentage inhibition of α-amylase by P. amygdalus, H. rosa-sinensis and Acarbose (50 &100 μg/mL) at dose of 50mg/mL and 100mg/mL were found to be 60.11±2.74%,74.86±0.31*%, 71.36± 1.86%, 81.49±1.72%, 82.33±1.10% and 95.37±0.56*%, respectively. The IC50 values were found to be 40.26μg/mL for acarbose, 49.63mg/mL for ethanolic extract of H. rosa-sinensis and 56.42mg/mL for aqueous extract of P. amygdalus.

Aim and objective: Stress has overwhelmed the world, mortality due to stress is continually increasing, and pregnancy has known by its physiological modulation. This article has a clear explanation about the effect of the ß-carboline alkaloid harmine containing in the plant of Peganum harmala, it makes a huge debate in many countries as Iran, Brazil, Algeria, China, Australia about the main component that exerted abortion and until now there is no work resolved the matter. Methods: In this study, we planned our experience, so that each sub-group treated with harmine, stressed with footshock or received the both, according to their pregnancy stages. Results: Footshock stress as expected with its maximum intensity could be tolerated by the fetuses so could keep the rats pregnant along the main stage, damaged to several physiological parameters, but it makes a good pairing with harmine. Conclusion: Harmine has enhanced the cognition during pregnancy, and exerted its anxiolytic effect too. Its decreasing effect of food consumption and enhancement of implantation was the main reason to confirm its raising estrogen levels from previous works, raising thrombocytes due to its enhancement of serotonin via its effect of monoamine-oxydase inhibitor MAO I. Background: Quercus infectoria is a kind of forest tree widely used for livestock feeding within the northern parts of Iraq with little was known about the Quercus infectoria toxicity mainly in pregnant animals. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the potential effect of Quercus infectoria acorn on the pregnant albino rats. Methods: This study was conducted on the Wistar pregnant rats, using aqueous extract of the acorn at doses of 2 grams/ rat for a period of 10 days. The effect of the quercus acorn on the animal behavior, pregnancy hematobiochemical parameters was investigated compared to the control groups. Result: Neither mortality, nor significant changes in animals’ behavior were detected in treated rats; whereas, abortion and early parturition with lower weight of the pups were observed in treated pregnant rats. Significant increases in red blood cells, packed cell volume, hemoglobin concentration, means corpuscular volume and means corpuscular hemoglobin and levels of neutrophils and eosinophil were reported in treated rats compared to the control groups. Besides, blood urea nitrogen and aspartate aminotransferase were significantly increased in the treated group. Study results suggest that the aqueous extract of Quercus infectoria acorn has potential toxic effects on pregnancy.
