AbstractUnderstanding emergence is an important goal of system thinking, as it can express both desirable and negative properties of products and systems. Emergence has also a special importance as it has a direct link to the performance of products and systems, and thus has a direct relationship with the quality of life and thus sustainability in our societies. Emergence and system thinking are closely related to engineering design methodologies. In our paper, we develop a more precise definition of emergence through the core principles of systems complementarity that are similarity, irreducibility and sophisticated relationships expressed through the interfaces between systems, subsystems or product components. We demonstrate the utility of the approach based on an aircraft pylon case study by presenting a detailed definition of an interface design matrix and analyse how pylon subsystems influence emergence. The results have shown that the product can be perfectly represented by a model-based approach supporting interface management and the assessment of system complementarity. In turn, this approach allows to go beyond a qualitative definition of emergence, as it proposes a quantitative approach through the assessment of complementarity.

The definition of the multimorbidity concept reveals insufficient specificity of the comorbidity and multimorbidity definitions and, as a result, confusion in the use of these terms. Most authors are unanimous that the “core” of multimorbidity is presence of more than one disease in a patient. These coexisting diseases can be pathogenetically interconnected and non-interconnected. Regardless, the degree of multimorbidity always affects prognosis and quality of life.

AbstractThe central aim of the article is company governance, i.e., researching governance of a company that does not want to be only financially successful but also direct its governance toward socially responsible governance. The article begins with the definition of “theoretical backgrounds,” in which social responsibility in regard to company governance improvement in quality is explained. The article then focuses on the measurement of the quality of company governance; in the research, the selected tool chosen to evaluate the governance of the chosen company regarding social responsibility, i.e., SEECGAN index, is used. Further, the case study of a Slovenian public limited liability company is used. One of the important research findings is the recognition that the addressed part of the SEECGAN index needs to be innovated and further developed. Additional questions for the completion of the index used presents the added value of the article. This article has two limitations: 1) it focuses only on the tool chosen to evaluate the governance of the chosen company regarding social responsibility; 2) the case study is based on publicly accessible data.

This chapter proposes a framework for analyzing the credibility of online news sites, allowing diaspora populations to evaluate the credibility of online news about their home countries. A definition of credibility is established as a theoretical framework for analysis, and a framework of seven elements is developed based on the following elements: accuracy, authority, believability, quality of message construction, peer review, comparison, and corroboration. Later, those elements are applied to a variety of online news sources available to the Zimbabwean diaspora that serves as a case study for explaining the framework. The chapter concludes with a discussion of the framework in relation to some contextual circumstances of diaspora populations and presents some limitations of the framework as diaspora populations might actually apply the different elements.

One major objective for information portals is to provide relevant and timely information to their intended target groups. The main challenge from an information management perspective, however, is that the portal itself does not have full information ownership, and therefore cannot guarantee information quality. Poor information quality severely decreases the actual business value of a portal, but the quality of the portal information is inherited from the underlying sources. The case study we present illustrates the evolution of the Swedish Travel and Tourism Council’s (STTC) national Internet portal through three phases, thereby unmasking some of the core problems in portal information management: information ownership, stakeholder incentives, and clear business roles in the content provision process.

Ontology is the core component in Semantic Web applications. The employment of an ontology building method affects the quality of ontology and the applicability of ontology language. A weighted classification approach for ontology building guidelines is presented in this chapter. The evaluation criteria are based on an existing classification scheme of a semiotic framework for evaluating the quality of conceptual models. A sample of Web-based ontology building method guidelines is evaluated in general and experimented with using data from a case study in particular. Directions for further refinement of ontology building methods are discussed.

Software entities (software products or processes) are characterized by many attributes, each one in its turn can be measured by one or more measures. In several cases the software entities have to be evaluated as a whole, thus raising the problem of aggregating measures to give an overall, single view on the software entity. This paper presents a method to aggregate measures, which works by comparing the product/process with predefined, ideal entities, or profiles. Profiles are defined starting from ranges of values on measures of attributes. The method is based on two main phases, namely definition of the evaluation model and application of the evaluation model. It is presented through a simplified case study that deals with evaluating the level of quality of an asset to decide whether to accept it in a reuse repository. A plausible way of how the method could be applied to process maturity assessment is also provided. The advantages of the method are that it allows using ordinal scales, while it deals explicitly with preferences expressed, implicitly or explicitly, by the evaluator.

Commonly used GIS combination operators such as Boolean conjunction/disjunction and weighted linear combination can be generalized to the ordered weighted averaging (OWA) family of operators. This multicriteria evaluation method allows decision-makers to define a decision strategy on a continuum between pessimistic and optimistic strategies. Recently, OWA has been introduced to GIS-based decision support systems. We propose to extend a previous implementation of OWA with linguistic quantifiers to simplify the definition of decision strategies and to facilitate an exploratory analysis of multiple criteria. The linguistic quantifier-guided OWA procedure is illustrated using a dataset for evaluating residential quality of neighborhoods in London, Ontario. <div><br></div><div>This is a post-peer-review, pre-copyedit version of an article published in Journal of Geographical Systems. This article seeks to contribute to the current debate on the new definition of the “museum” – a debate which led to turmoil at the 2019 ICOM General Assembly in Kyoto. With reference to the case study of the Museum of the Second World War in Gdansk (MSWW), it analyses the new and very successful genre of the narrative museum, a genre which arguably fulfils the core elements of the definition currently being discussed by ICOM. In this regard, it brings into focus the paramount importance of community involvement in creating and managing narrative museums – an aspect that has been virtually absent in the academic and media debates over the nature of the MSWW and its programme. By pointing out the fragility of the foundations for such participation, based solely on trust between communities, the museum, and state authorities, this article calls for and provides guidance for an academic and institutional redefinition of the narrative museum and the institution of a museum in general.

ABSTRACT In general, the condition of the education in Indonesia yet is not encouraging, among others many obstacles noted; limitation of education access, the number of teachers which is not evenly distributed, particularly to the remote areas and the quality of the teachers which does not yet meet the expectation. As per Political and Economic Risk Consultant (PERC) survey, the quality of education in Indonesia was ranked at number 12 out of 12 countries in Asia. Indonesia position was below Vietnam. One of the initiative, which is taken by the Indonesian government to reduce the gap is creating a program so called Indonesia teaching (Indonesia mengajar) by recruiting, training, and sending young people who are the best graduates of many universities to teach as elementary school teachers for one year from all over the places within Indonesia. Aside of their main duty to teach, they also have been mandated to change the behavior of the people around to be better. To support the said program, Sekolah Tinggi Manajemen IPMI has conducted a workshop regarding leadership and coaching for the candidates of young teachers (CPM). The methods of the workshop are lecturing, question and answer, case study, an explanation of the definition of the leadership in general, the leadership within own self, the leadership in regards to building the effective interrelationship with other people, how doing the effective coaching, how to give the effective feedback. Upon completion of the workshop it is expected that the CPMs will be able  to demonstrate the leadership behavior, ready to undergo the challenges and to inspire their students including other people surrounding.
