Effects of rapeseed-meal and fish-meal supplementation of maize silage-based diets upon the tissue growth and body composition of store lambs

AbstractThirty-six individually penned lambs (mean live weight 32·4 (s.d. 2·27) kg) were offered maize silage ad libitum and one of three concentrate mixes, two of which contained extracted rapeseed meal (control and HR) and the other fish meal (FM). The concentrates were given according to live weight and in sufficient quantities to provide proportionately about 0·4 of the dry matter (DM) intake of the lambs. The dietary concentrations of the nitrogen (N) g/kg DM were 22·4, 27·4 and 27·5 and of the rumen undegradable N 6·6, 7·3 and 11·6 for the control, HR and FM diets, respectively. All lambs were slaughtered at 45 kg live weight and chemical composition of the empty body and some of the component parts determined. A further 12 lambs were slaughtered at the beginning of the experiment to establish body composition before the dietary treatments were imposed.The HR lambs had lower fleece.free empty body (FFEB) gains than either control or FM lambs (P < 0·05). This reduced gain of HR lambs was particularly associated with a reduction in fat deposition (P < 0·01) such that the FFEBs contained less fat than control and FM lambs (P < 0·01). The efficiency of conversion of metabolizable energy for growth (kg) was worse than both the control (P < 0·01) and the FM (P < 0·001) diets. The FFEBs of HR lambs also contained more ash (P < 0·05) than the lambs receiving the other diets.The FM diet was associated with greater gains of fat and energy in the guts compared with the control diet (P < 0·05) and FM lambs had a better kg, value than control lambs (P < 0·05). There was no evidence that FM lambs had better N retention than lambs on the other two treatments.

The live-weight gain of HR lambs was considerably depressed in comparison with the control and FM lambs during the first 21 days of the experiment (P < 0·05). Overall HR lambs gained weight more slowly than control and FM lambs up to 45 kg live weight but the difference was not statistically significant. Food conversion ratio was better for FM than HR (P < 0·01). There were no treatment differences in wool growth.The results obtained provide little evidence that fish meal had any beneficial effects upon lamb growth compared with the control diet except a possible increase in the efficiency of metabolizable energy utilization.

Growth and efficiencies of nitrogen and energy utilization for growth by 72 young British Friesian steers (initial live weight (LW) 110 kg) offered a well preserved, formic acid-treated, perennial ryegrass silage with and without supplements of fish meal were examined. Silage was offered either alone or mixed with 50, 100 or 150 g fish meal/kg silage dry matter (DM) and each diet was offered either ad libitum or intakes were restricted to 16, 19 or 22 g dietary DM/kg LW/day. Treatments were imposed over a period of 132 days. Body component weight gains were determined by comparative slaughter.Increasing the level of either feeding or fish meal increased rates of empty body weight gain linearly (P<0·001) and curvilinearly (P<0·05) respectively. Fish-meal supplementation increased rates of ash and crude protein gain (P<0·001) but, in comparison with the curvilinear response to increasing level of feeding (P<0·001), had small linear effects on fat gain (P>0·01). Consequently, in terms of whole body composition, animals given fish meal were leaner than animals offered silage alone. Fish-meal supplementation had no significant effect on the composition of the carcass but increased the concentration of protein in the liver and gastrointestinal tract.The increase in nitrogen intake associated with feeding fish meal resulted in a reduction in the efficiency of nitrogen utilization as level of fish meal increased. Nitrogen intake required for maintenance was estimated to be 1·054 g/kg LW0·75. In spite of marked differences in the composition of the empty body-weight gain, there was no evidence to support an effect of fish meal on the efficiency of metabolizable energy (ME) utilization for growth (kf) which was estimated to be 0·346 on the basis of data scaled by LW0·75. ME intake required for maintenance (MEm) was estimated to be 0·536 and 0·502 MJ/kg LW0·75 for silage alone and the 150 g fish-meal level respectively.

ABSTRACTTwo experiments are described in which individually-penned Suffolk × (Blue-faced Leicester × Swaledale) lambs were given complete diets based on grass silage, and voluntary intake, live-weight gain and nitrogen (N) retention were measured.Experiment 1 investigated the effects of supplements of fish meal (0, 60 and 120 g/kg diet dry matter (DM)) and barley (0, 150 and 300 g/kg diet DM) in a 3 × 3 design using 72 lambs. The lambs averaged 35 kg live weight at the start of the 47-day experiment. Fish-meal supplements increased daily intakes of diet DM, silage DM and metabolizable energy (ME), and improved daily gains, carcass weights and N retention. Barley supplements increased daily intakes of diet DM and ME, but reduced silage DM intake; live-weight gain, carcass weight and N retention were all improved.Experiment 2 investigated the effects of supplements of rapeseed meal (0 and 120 g/kg diet DM) in two forms (untreated and formaldehyde-treated) and barley (0 and 150 g/kg diet DM) in a 2 × 2 × 2 design with two missing treatments and using 48 lambs. The lambs averaged 39 kg live weight at the start of the 42-day experiment. Rapeseed meal supplements increased daily intakes of diet DM, silage DM and ME, and improved daily gains, carcass weights and N retention. Form of rapeseed meal had no effect. Barley increased diet DM and ME intakes and improved daily gains and carcass weights.

ABSTRACTLive-weight gain responses were investigated using 36 individually penned lambs (mean live weight 35·2 kg) given three sodium hydroxide treated straw-based diets: low-protein, low-rapeseed meal (control) diet; high protein, high-rapeseed meal (HR) diet; or high-protein, fish meal (FM) diet. The diets were formulated to provide 3 or 9 g undegradable nitrogen per kg dry matter (DM) respectively for the diets without or with fish meal. Diets were offered once a day in a 50: 50 forage-to-concentrate ratio in amounts calculated to support maintenance plus 150 g gain and were adjusted weekly according to live weight. Live-weight gain, measured for 7 weeks, was improved by the FM diet only (P < 0·05).The three diets were given also to rumen-fistulated sheep. The FM diet maintained higher rumen ammonia concentrations during most of the day. The FM and HR diets reduced rumen solid particle outflow rate (P < 0·05) and increased the effective degradability of DM and acid-detergent fibre.

ABSTRACTThree experiments were conducted to determine the metabolizable energy (ME) concentration of dry maize gluten feed (DMGF) in starter (experiment 1), growing (experiment 2) or finishing (experiment 3) diets for steers. Seventy-two weanling Holstein-Friesian steer calves (initially 52 kg live weight); 32 Aberdeen Angus and 24 Shorthorn steer calves (initially 250 kg live weight) and 32 Aberdeen Angus, 24 Shorthorn and 68 crossbred steers (initially 367 kg live weight) were used in experiments 1, 2 and 3, respectively. In experiment 1, calves were given one of three total mixed rations in which energy and protein ingredients on a dry matter (DM) basis were (g/kg): (1) 590 ground maize grain (MG), 260 rolled oats (RO) and 150 soya-bean meal (SBM); (2) 210 DMGF, 400 MG, 260 RO and 130 SBM; or (3) 440 DMGF, 210 MG, 250 RO and 100 SBM. Daily live-weight gains (LWG) and food-to-gain (F/G) ratios were similar across dietary treatments (P > 0·05). Calves given the diet containing 440 g DMGF per kg had higher DM intakes (DMI) than those given no DMGF (P < 0·05). ME concentration of the diet without DMGF was greater than ME concentrations of diets containing DMGF (P < 0·05). In experiment 2, calves were given one of four diets containing, on a DM basis (g/kg): (1) 800 maize silage (MS) and 200 MG; (2) 800 MS and 200 DMGF; (3) 500 MS and 500 DMGF; or (4) 200 MS and 800 DMGF. LWG and DMI of calves given 500 or 800 g DMGF per kg diets were higher than those of calves given 0 or 200 g DMGF per kg diets (P < 0·05). F/G ratios tended to increase and dietary ME concentrations tended to decrease with increasing content of DMGF in diets. In experiment 3, steers were given one of four diets, which on a DM basis were (g/kg): (1) 850 MG and 150 MS; (2) 300 DMGF, 150 MS and 550 MG; (3) 500 DMGF and 500 MG; or (4) 750 DMGF and 250 MG. LWG was not altered when DMGF replaced MG only or MG and MS (diet 2 v. 1 or diets 3 and 4 v. 1, respectively (P > 0·05)) in the diet. Steers given the 300 or 750 g DMGF per kg diets had higher DMI and lower F/G ratios than those fed diets without DMGF (P < 0·05). ME concentration of the diet without DMGF was greater (P < 0·05) than the ME concentration of 300 or 750 g DMGF per kg diets. ME concentration of DMGF, calculated by regression, was proportionately about 0·9 of the value of MG in all experiments and averaged 11·46 MJ/kg DM.

AbstractThis 3 × 2 factorial study involving three diets at two stocking densities tested the effect of replacing fish meal (FM) with either soybean meal (SBM) or rapeseed meal (RSM) in diets on growth and body composition of zebrafish (Danio rerio). Fish were fed three times daily for eight weeks. Morphometric and water quality parameters were also determined. The survival rate of the fish ranged from 95.2 - 97.8%. The water quality remained within the acceptable limits for tropical aquaculture. The stocking density did not show any significant difference (p>0.05) for the length and weight of the fish. The length, weight and condition factors were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the fish fed FM based diet. The fish length and weight related well (R2) across the diets but this was more significant for RSM than those fed the other two diets. The weight gain (WG), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and protein intake (PI) were significantly higher (p<0.05) in the fish fed the FM based diet than the other diets. No significant differences observed (p>0.05) in the specific growth rate (SGR), food intake (FI) and protein efficiency ratio (PER) among the fish fed the three diets. The crude protein CP, nitrogen-free extract (NFE) and ash contents of these fish did not differ significantly (p>0.05). However, the ether extract (EE) of the fish fed SBM diet was significantly lower (p<0.05 than the other two diets. It appears that both SBM and RSM as sustainable source to partially FM in the diets of zebrafish and similar fish species.

AbstractIn each of three experiments, 60 Limousin × Holstein Friesian bulls, initially of 191, (s..e. 5·0), 177 (s.e. 5·5) and 210 (s.e. 7·2) kg mean live weight for experiments 1, 2 and 3 respectively, were offered maize silage ad libitum plus one of three barley-based, isonitrogenous compound diets containing 200 g rapeseed meal, 575 g maize-gluten feed or 100 g fish meal per kg fresh weight. Compound diets were given at the rate of 3·0 kg (fresh weight) per head per day up to 320 kg live weight and at 3·3 kg per head per day from 320 kg to 420 kg live weight. In experiment 3, when bulls were taken through to slaughter, the compound diet was further increased to 3·5 kg per head per day from 420 kg live weight to slaughter. Experiments 1 and 2 were conducted over 128 and 194 days, with mean live weights at the end of the experiments of 347 (s.e. 17·2) and 414 (s.e. 24·2) kg respectively. In experiment 3, bulls were slaughtered at 16 months of age at a mean live weight of 544 (s.e. 25·0) kg.In experiment 1, the fish-meal diet gave the highest rate of daily live-weight gain at 1·34 compared with 1·17 and 1·16 (s.e.d. 0·041) kg for rapeseed-meal and maize-gluten diets, respectively. In experiments 2 and 3, daily gains were similar on all treatments at 1·21, 1·19 and 1·26 (s.e.d. 0·036) kg and 1·06, 1·09 and 1·11 (s.e.d. 0·035) kg for the rapeseed-meal, maize-gluten and fish-meal diets respectively. Total daily dry-matter intakes did not show consistent trends: in experiment 1, intakes were 5·8, 5·6 and 5·8 kg/day, in experiment 2, 6·2, 6·2 and 6·3 kg/day; and in experiment 3, 7·1, 7·3 and 7·1 kg/day for rapeseed-meal, maize-gluten and fish meal, respectively. The higher intakes of dry matter in experiment 3 were due to the greater intakes of maize silage by bulls taken to heavier weights in this experiment.

ABSTRACTThe potential of using low glucosinolate full-fat rapeseed meal (FFR) in the diets of early-weaned piglets was investigated in this experiment. FFR (containing 17 (xmol total glucosinolates and 2·8 mg erucic acid per g of whole seed) was used on an isonitrogenous basis at either 200 g<kg or 400 g<kg to replace full-fat soya-bean meal. Four replicates of three contemporary pen groups of 10 piglets weaned between 3 and 4 weeks of age were randomly allocated at a mean initial weight of 8·41 (s.e. 1·105) kg to the three dietary treatments. The experimental diets were given for 3 weeks. Inclusion of FFR significantly depressed food intake, daily live-weight gain and food conversion. There were no significant differences between the performance of piglets given either 200 or 400 g FFR per kg. Intakes of the diets containing FFR per unit of metabolic body weight as a proportion of the control diet decreased from about 0·85 to 0·75 from the 1st to the last week of the feeding period. This suggested that the acceptability of diets containing FFR decreased with time, possibly due to the presence of unpalatable and perhaps antinutritive factors which may include glucosinolates although present at relatively low concentrations. It was concluded that the feeding value of FFR would need to be improved by development of oilseed rape varieties with much lower levels of glucosinolates.

1. A total of six diets based on maize silage were formulated to examine the effect of protein- and non-protein-nitrogen, and energy supplementation on the flow of amino acids to the small intestine and the synthesis of microbial amino acids in the rumen of growing cattle. All diets contained 24 g totai nitrogen (N)/kg dry matter (DM), of which 550 g N/kg total N was supplied by either urea or fish meal. Four diets contained low levels of barley (estimated total dietary metabolizable energy content of 10·4 M J/kgDM) and urea-N and fish meal-N were supplied in the ratios 3:1, 1·4:1, 0·6:1 and 0·3:1. The other two diets contained between 300 and 400 g barley/kg total diet (11·3 MJ metabolizable energy/kg DM) and the urea-N to fish meal-N ratios were 3:1 and 0·3:1.2. On the four low-energy diets, fish meal inclusion tended to reduce the extent of organic matter (OM) digestion in the rumen but significantly increased duodenal amino acid supply (P< 0·05) in a quadratic manner. Microbial-N synthesis was increased by the two intermediate levels of fish meal supplementation but declined at the highest level of inclusion. With increasing levels of fish meal inclusion, a greater proportion of the dietary protein was found to escape rumen degradation and the apparent degradabilities of fish meal and maize-silage protein of all four diets were estimated to be 0·22 and 0·73 respectively.3. The substitution of barley for part of the maize silage enhanced duodenal supply of amino acids, irrespective of the form of the N supplement, and stimulated microbial amino acid synthesis. For all diets efficiency of microbial-N synthesis was found to vary between 22·5 and 46 g N/kg rumen-digested OM. Contrary to what was found for low-energy diets, the inclusion of fish meal tended to reduce the flow of dietary protein to the small intestine, but these differences were not statistically significant.4. The results appertaining to microbial synthesis, dietary protein degradabilities and duodenal amino acid flow for all diets are discussed in relation to the Agricultural Research Council (1980) proposals for the protein requirements of ruminants, and the production responses observed when similar diets were fed to growing cattle.

The study was undertaken to investigate the effects of concentrate supplementation with different protein levels on intake, digestibility and growth performance of Red Chittagong (RC) heifers fed urea molasses straw (UMS) based diet. Twelve RC heifers having average live weight of 124.83±43.15 kg and aged between 8 to 14 months were selected for 90 days feeding trial. Animals were divided into four groups having three animals in each and were randomly assigned to four dietary treatments in a Randomized Block Design (RBD). The experimental diets were formulated using urea molasses straw (UMS), German grass (Echinochloa grousgalli) with or without concentrate mix (having different levels of protein). All the animals received UMS ad libitum and German grass at the rate of 20% of total DM intake. In addition to UMS and German grass of control diet T0, animals on diets T1, T2 and T3 were supplied with concentrate mixture at the rate of 10% of DM intake containing 15, 20 and 25% CP, respectively. Average daily DM intake was 2.65, 3.06, 2.62 and 2.86 kg/100 kg LW for diets T0, T1, T2 and T3, respectively and the difference was non significant (P>0.05). The digestibility of DM, CP, EE, NFE and digestible nutrients (DCP, DEE and DNFE) for diets T1, T2 and T3 was significantly higher than those for diet T0. The daily average liveweight gain of RC heifers fed diets T0, T1, T2 and T3 were 100, 275, 333 and 291 g respectively (P<0.01). Concentrate mixture having 20% crude protein may be supplemented at the rate of 10% of DM intake per day for optimum growth of Red Chittagong heifers.
