Ecology of Sepiola Atlantica (Mollusca: Cephalopoda) in the Shallow Sublittoral Zone

The ecology of the sepiolid Sepiola atlantica in Firemore Bay, Loch Ewe, on the west coast of Scotland was investigated by beam trawling surveys. Low densities of this species were present in the shallow sublittoral zone of the sandy bay. A size range of 4–21 mm dorsal mantle length (DML) was obtained, with no significant differences detected between the mean sizes of males and females. Males reached gonadal maturity slightly earlier and at a slightly smaller size than females. Sepiola atlantica was present in the bay in each of the months in which sampling took place suggesting a resident population, the structure of which varied considerably. Juveniles were found over a prolonged period of the year but peak recruitment (animals of 4–10 mm DML) was in May and July. Animals <4 mm DML were not caught and no egg masses were found in the trawls. In aquarium conditions, S. atlantica fed on live crustaceans such as mysids, Crangon crangon and Palaemon serratus, although Corophium volutator, an estuarine crustacean not normally found in the marine sandy bay, was the most accepted food.

Detailed catch and life history data for Perioculodes longimanus and Pontocrates arcticus, together with more limited comparable information on Synchelidium maculatum, are reported. Samples were taken year-round using a 0–5 mm mesh D-net towed over sand in the immediate sublittoral zone (-2 to -6 m Chart Datum) in Kames Bay, Great Cumbrae Island, Scotland. Estimated population densities of Perioculodes longimanus were highest in summer. The occurrence of Pontocrates arcticus was more erratic and S. maculatum occurred only in midsummer in very low numbers. The mean sizes of all population categories of Perioculodes longimanus were bigger in summer than in late autumn and winter. Female Perioculodes longimanus parasitized with the copepod Sphaeronella minuta were significantly smaller than the whole category ‘sexable females’. Adult female S. minuta (one per amphipod brood pouch infected) carried — 70–200 eggs per sac. In both Perioculodes longimanus and Pontocrates arcticus females were larger than males. In Synchelidium maculatum, by contrast, males and females were not different in size. Gravid females were present virtually year-round in Perioculodes longimanus and Pontocrates arcticus, with particularly high proportions of ovigerous females in midsummer and low proportions in midwinter. Both of these species had an annual life cycle with only one generation per year. Longevity was estimated at 15 months. The sex ratio nearly always showed substantial female dominance in all three species. Fecundity appeared to be related to body size but, due to egg losses during sample processing, data were too few for detailed analysis. The eggs of Perioculodes longimanus and Pontocrates arcticus were elliptical in shape, with winter eggs being smaller than summer eggs in Perioculodes longimanus, but larger in Pontocrates arcticus. The percentage of ovigerous females in the population was significantly correlated with a range of environmental factors tested, the highest correlation being with maximum weekly air temperature (for Perioculodes longimanus) and daylength (Pontocrates arcticus), although causative effects cannot be established since temperature/daylength factors were not independent variables

<p>This study aimed at investigating the Effectiveness of Mantle of the Expert in creative thinking Skills among the 7<sup>th</sup> Graders. The study conducted on a sample of 7<sup>th</sup> Graders at Kober Secondary Boys School and Upper Kober Elementary Girls School. The study sample consisted of (100) students split into two groups (experimental and control). The researcher adopting the Torrance test for creative thinking the verbal image "A" by examining the tests used in the Ristow study (1988), Edwards and Baldov (1987) study, and designing a teacher book for the (engineering and measurement) unit according to the integration between the strategies of the mantle of the expert and role playing.</p> <p>This study adopted quasi-experimental design. It included two groups (experimental and controlled) in two branches (males and females) for each group. The controlled group was taught by using the traditional method whereas the experimental group by the mantle of the expert. The data analyzed using (ANCOVA) test to measure the differences in the development of creative thinking between the control and experimental groups.</p> <p>The Conclusions showed that there are statistically significant differences in the mean scores of the creative thinking test due to the way, gender and interaction between them.</p> <p>Based on the Conclusions of the study, the researcher recommends the need to use the mantles of the expert in the teaching of mathematics.</p>

I compared adult size and sea age at sexual maturity among nine populations of anadromous brown trout, Salmo trutta, in two Norwegian rivers to determine the extent of inter- and intrariverine variations. Variation in the mean length of spawners and in the mean sea age at sexual maturity were mainly dependent on the variations found within rather than between rivers. Mean lengths and mean age at maturity of males increased significantly with increasing altitude of the spawning area and with migration distance in freshwater. In females, positive significant correlations were found with mean lengths and altitude of the spawning area and with mean sea age at maturity and both spawning site altitude and migration distance. Mean lengths and ages of males and females were not significantly correlated with the rate of water discharge in the streams during spawning. The size of gravel substrate for spawning was of minor importance in explaining interpopulation variation in mean female size. The increase noted in mean length and in mean sea age at maturity of both males and females is probably an adaptation to greater energy expenditure to reach the uppermost natal spawning areas.

The length–weight relationship for 298 pomfret (Brama japonica) ranging in fork length from 30 to 49 cm, and caught in 1956 and 1957 in the Gulf of Alaska by gillnets varying in mesh size from [Formula: see text] (63 mm) to [Formula: see text] inches (133 mm) was examined. Covariance analysis of the data indicated that within years the length–weight relationship did not differ between males and females; and, on the average, both males and females of a particular length were significantly heavier in 1956 than in 1957. Allometric equations for each year based on data for sexes combined are considered more appropriate than a single equation based on pooled data. The equations relating weight in kilograms to length in centimeters, for 1956 and 1957, respectively, are[Formula: see text]and apply to the lower third of the known size range for pomfret in the Gulf of Alaska.

Samples were taken from 284 ringed seals (Phoca hispida) in the Svalbard area during April–July 1981 and March–April 1982. The age of 283 seals was determined by reading annuli in the cementum of the canine teeth. The mean age of the males was 11.3 years, and of the females, 14.9 years. Females were found to be significantly older than males. The mean length of sexually mature ringed seals was 128.9 cm for both sexes. The mean weight of adult males and females was 53.5 and 61.4 kg, respectively. Females were found to be significantly heavier than males. The sex ratio was 47.8% males and 52.2% females. Studies of microscopic sections of testis and epididymis from ringed seal males showed that 63, 75, and 80% of 5-, 6-, and 7-year-old animals, respectively, were sexually mature. The weights of testis and epididymis, diameters of tubuli, and the size of testis all showed a marked increase in the 5-year age-class. Macroscopic sections of ovaries from ringed seal females showed that 20, 60, and 80% of 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old animals, respectively, were sexually mature. The size of the ovaries showed a marked increase in the 5-year age-class. The ovulation rate of ringed seals from Svalbard was calculated to be 0.91.

Seventy-nine cases of autoimmune thrombocytopenia seen by the Baylor Hematology section of The Methodist Hospital between 1991 and 1996 were retrospectively reviewed to assess the effectiveness of danazol in the treatment of autoimmune thrombocytopenia. Among the 42 patients who received danazol, the mean initial platelet count prior to treatment was 24.3 ± 17.4 (SD) × 109/L with a mean duration of disease of 53 months. Most cases were idiopathic, but some patients had underlying secondary disorders (rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematosus, HIV, and/or Evans' syndrome). Overall 57% of the patients treated with danazol had an excellent or a good response with three patients who had unmaintained remission for >11 months. Minimal side effects were noted. Fifty percent of the patients with associated secondary disorders achieved an excellent or good response. The hemolytic component of all three Evans' syndrome cases was well controlled with danazol. In two cases, danazol was effective where a variety of other treatment regimens were not. An excellent or a good response was found in 58%, 62%, and 53% in patients >65 years old, between 45 and 65 years old, and <45 years old, respectively. Response rates were similar in males and females, Seventy percent of the nonsplenectomized patients had an excellent or a good response compared to 33% in postsplenectomy patients. Overall in view of its favorable side-effect profile, it is rational early on to attempt to abrogate the need for splenectomy, it may salvage splenectomy failures, and there is a reasonable response rate in those refractory to multiple prior therapies. Abstract The structure of the mean precipitation of the south Asian monsoon is spatially complex. Embedded in a broad precipitation maximum extending eastward from 70°E to the northwest tropical Pacific Ocean are strong local maxima to the west of the Western Ghats mountain range of India, in Cambodia extending into the eastern China Sea, and over the eastern tropical Indian Ocean and the Bay of Bengal (BoB), where the strongest large-scale global maximum in precipitation is located. In general, the maximum precipitation occurs over the oceans and not over the land regions. Distinct temporal variability also exists with time scales ranging from days to decades. Neither the spatial nor temporal variability of the monsoon can be explained simply as the response to the cross-equatorial pressure gradient force between the continental regions of Asia and the oceans of the Southern Hemisphere, as suggested in classical descriptions of the monsoon. Monthly (1979–2005) and daily (1997–present) rainfall estimates from the Global Precipitation Climatology Project (GPCP), 3-hourly (1998–present) rainfall estimates from the Tropical Rainfall Measuring Mission (TRMM) microwave imager (TMI) estimates of sea surface temperature (SST), reanalysis products, and satellite-determined outgoing longwave radiation (OLR) data were used as the basis of a detailed diagnostic study to explore the physical basis of the spatial and temporal nature of monsoon precipitation. Propagation characteristics of the monsoon intraseasonal oscillations (MISOs) and biweekly signals from the South China Sea, coupled with local and regional effects of orography and land–atmosphere feedbacks are found to modulate and determine the locations of the mean precipitation patterns. Long-term variability is found to be associated with remote climate forcing from phenomena such as El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO), but with an impact that changes interdecadally, producing incoherent responses of regional rainfall. A proportion of the interannual modulation of monsoon rainfall is found to be the direct result of the cumulative effect of rainfall variability on intraseasonal (25–80 day) time scales over the Indian Ocean. MISOs are shown to be the main modulator of weather events and encompass most synoptic activity. Composite analysis shows that the cyclonic system associated with the northward propagation of a MISO event from the equatorial Indian Ocean tends to drive moist air toward the Burma mountain range and, in so doing, enhances rainfall considerably in the northeast corner of the bay, explaining much of the observed summer maximum oriented parallel to the mountains. Similar interplay occurs to the west of the Ghats. While orography does not seem to play a defining role in MISO evolution in any part of the basin, it directly influences the cumulative MISO-associated rainfall, thus defining the observed mean seasonal pattern. This is an important conclusion since it suggests that in order for the climate models to reproduce the observed seasonal monsoon rainfall structure, MISO activity needs to be well simulated and sharp mountain ranges well represented.

Abstract The majority of the models that participated in phase 5 of the Coupled Model Intercomparison Project global warming experiments warm faster in the eastern equatorial Pacific Ocean than in the west. GFDL-ESM2M is an exception among the state-of-the-art global climate models in that the equatorial Pacific sea surface temperature (SST) in the west warms faster than in the east, and the Walker circulation strengthens in response to warming. This study shows that this “La Niña–like” trend simulated by GFDL-ESM2M could be a physically consistent response to warming, and that the forced response could have been detectable since the late twentieth century. Two additional models are examined: GFDL-ESM2G, which differs from GFDL-ESM2M only in the oceanic components, warms without a clear zonal SST gradient; and HadGEM2-CC exhibits a warming pattern that resembles the multimodel mean. A fundamental observed constraint between the amplitude of El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the mean-state zonal SST gradient is reproduced well by GFDL-ESM2M but not by the other two models, which display substantially weaker ENSO nonlinearity than is observed. Under this constraint, the weakening nonlinear ENSO amplitude in GFDL-ESM2M rectifies the mean state to be La Niña–like. GFDL-ESM2M exhibits more realistic equatorial thermal stratification than GFDL-ESM2G, which appears to be the most important difference for the ENSO nonlinearity. On longer time scales, the weaker polar amplification in GFDL-ESM2M may also explain the origin of the colder equatorial upwelling water, which could in turn weaken the ENSO amplitude.

The wind and wave conditions in the waters of the Kalianget-Kangean cruise route in the west season are relatively high so that these winds and waves can have a dangerous impact on that cruise route. The aim of this research was to analyze the characteristics of wind speed and wave height over a 10 year period (2008-2017), as well as to evaluate the weekly patterns for three months (December 2017-February 2018). These time stamps represent the west season in waters at Kalianget-Kangean route, and to identify the impact of winds and wave on this path. The method used in this research is descriptive statistical analysis to obtain the mean and maximum values ​​of wind speed and wave height. Wind and wave patterns were analyzed by WRPlot and continued with mapping of wind and wave patterns in the waters of Kalianget-Kangean and its surroundings. The data used was obtained from the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency. The results show wind and wave characteristics with two peaks formed regularly between 2008-2017, marking the west and east monsoons. In addition, the wind speed and wave height were generally below the danger threshold, ie <10 knots and <2 m, respectively. However, there are exceptions in the west season, especially at the peak in January, where the forces are strengthened with a steady blowing direction. The maximum wind speed reaches and wave height reaches 29 knots and 6.7 m, respectively. The weekly conditions for both parameters from December 2017 to February 2018 were relatively safe, for sailing. Moreover, January 23-29, 2018 featured extreme conditions estimated as dangerous for cruise due to the respective maximum values of 25 knots and 3.8 m recorded. The channel is comparably safe, except during the western season time in December, January, February, characterized by wind speeds and wave height exceeding 21 knots and 2.5 m, correspondingly.

Abstract The study of population and reproductive traits provides information about the ecological structure of natural populations. This study aimed to characterize dynamics and reproductive traits of Hyalella palmeirensis from a natural pond from southern Brazil. The amphipods were sampled monthly (August 2012 to July 2013) by a person with the aid of a hand net for 20 minutes. Ovigerous females and pre-copulatory pairs were individualized in the field. A total of 12,325 individuals were sampled, being 1,421 males, 6,983 females (including 215 ovigerous females) and 3,921 juveniles. Paired and unpaired males were significantly greater in size than females. There was a positive correlation between body size (CL) of paired males and females. Males and females showed bimodal distribution. Total sex ratio favored females, and these were more frequent in almost all months. Ovigerous females and precopulatory pairs were found throughout the year, but with high frequency in winter and autumn, respectively, characterizing a seasonal reproduction. Juveniles were sampled throughout the year, with greater intensity in the spring. The mean fecundity was 19.6 ± 4.34 eggs. No reduction in the number of eggs was observed during embryonic development. The results observed in H. palmeirensis demonstrate that this species has a population and reproductive dynamics very similar to other species of Hyalella already analyzed in southern Brazil. Moreover, it can be seen that although the H. palmeirensis occurs in an environment with anthropic influence (soy cultivation,) the population is managing to remain in the area, with reproduction and recruitment in most months of year.
