The development of malaria due to Plasmodium falciparum is a complex, multi-stage process. It is usually characterized by an exponential growth in the number of parasite-infected erythrocytes, followed by marked oscillations in this number with a period of 48 h, which are eventually dampened. This course of events has been the subject of various mathematical models. In this paper we propose a new mathematical model for the in-host asexual erythrocytic development of P. falciparum malaria. Synchronicity of the infection is shown to be an inherent feature of infection, irrespective of the duration of merozoite release from the liver. It will, therefore, cause periodic symptoms, as known in malaria patients. We also simulate the effects of an induced host immune response and show how the level of immunity affects the development of disease. The simulations fit well with the clinical observations. We show how infection can become asynchronous and discuss the effect of desynchronization on the circulating and total parasitaemia and demonstrate that synchronized broods will show parasitaemia fluctuations.

Personal branding in the last ten years has been gaining significantly in popularity - especially in the business environment (Gehl, 2011; Wee & Brooks, 2010). Meanwhile, the literature still recognizes the need for empirical research on personal branding that examines how various professions experience personal branding. Managers are increasingly aware that the activities they perform as part of personal branding affect how the organization they represent is perceived. The aim of this article is to identify the process of building personal brands by managers. To achieve this goal, a literature review and qualitative research were carried out in the form of individual in-depth interviews. The choice of the research method is justified by the subject of the analysis. The study covered a group of nine people with at least two years of experience in a managerial position and employed in service companies located in Greater Poland. As a result of the conducted research, it was found that personal branding is perceived as a multi-stage process in which social media is credited with increasing use. In addition, organizations only support building personal brands by managers and executives. The article is a field for further exploration of publications and research.

Abstract Affective computing is a key research topic in artificial intelligence which is applied to psychology and machines. It consists of the estimation and measurement of human emotions. A person’s body language is one of the most significant sources of information during job interview, and it reflects a deep psychological state that is often missing from other data sources. In our work, we combine two tasks of pose estimation and emotion classification for emotional body gesture recognition to propose a deep multi-stage architecture that is able to deal with both tasks. Our deep pose decoding method detects and tracks the candidate’s skeleton in a video using a combination of depthwise convolutional network and detection-based method for 2D pose reconstruction. Moreover, we propose a representation technique based on the superposition of skeletons to generate for each video sequence a single image synthesizing the different poses of the subject. We call this image: ‘history pose image’, and it is used as input to the convolutional neural network model based on the Visual Geometry Group architecture. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our method in comparison with other methods in the state of the art on the standard Common Object in Context keypoint dataset and Face and Body gesture video database.

A novel principle of cup wheel grinding of rotating concave quadric surface was proposed. The mathematical model of machining process was established to prove the feasibility of precision grinding of rotating concave paraboloid based on the introduced principle. The conditions of non-interference grinding of concave paraboloid were mathematically derived. The processing range and its influence factors were discussed. The trajectory equation of abrasive particle was concluded. Finally, the math expressions of numerical controlled parameters was put forward in the process of grinding of the concave paraboloid.

AbstractIn this paper we propose a new mathematical model capable of merging Darwinian Evolution, Human History and SETI into a single mathematical scheme:(1) Darwinian Evolution over the last 3.5 billion years is defined as one particular realization of a certain stochastic process called Geometric Brownian Motion (GBM). This GBM yields the fluctuations in time of the number of species living on Earth. Its mean value curve is an increasing exponential curve, i.e. the exponential growth of Evolution.(2) In 2008 this author provided the statistical generalization of the Drake equation yielding the number N of communicating ET civilizations in the Galaxy. N was shown to follow the lognormal probability distribution.(3) We call “b-lognormals” those lognormals starting at any positive time b (“birth”) larger than zero. Then the exponential growth curve becomes the geometric locus of the peaks of a one-parameter family of b-lognormals: this is our way to re-define Cladistics.(4) b-lognormals may be also be interpreted as the lifespan of any living being (a cell, or an animal, a plant, a human, or even the historic lifetime of any civilization). Applying this new mathematical apparatus to Human History, leads to the discovery of the exponential progress between Ancient Greece and the current USA as the envelope of all b-lognormals of Western Civilizations over a period of 2500 years.(5) We then invoke Shannon's Information Theory. The b-lognormals' entropy turns out to be the index of “development level” reached by each historic civilization. We thus get a numerical estimate of the entropy difference between any two civilizations, like the Aztec-Spaniard difference in 1519.(6) In conclusion, we have derived a mathematical scheme capable of estimating how much more advanced than Humans an Alien Civilization will be when the SETI scientists will detect the first hints about ETs.
