SUMMARYThis paper discusses about a proposed solution to the obstacle avoidance problem in multi-robot systems when applied to active target tracking. It is explained how a nonlinear model predictive formation control (NMPFC) previously proposed solves this problem of fixed and moving obstacle avoidance. First, an approach is presented which uses potential functions as terms of the NMPFC. These terms penalize the proximity with mates and obstacles. A strategy to avoid singularity problems with the potential functions using a modified A* path planning algorithm was then introduced. Results with simulations and experiments with real robots are presented and discussed demonstrating the efficiency of the proposed approach.

SUMMARYThis work presents, first, a complete dynamic model of a unicycle-like mobile robot that takes part in a multi-robot formation. A linear parameterization of this model is performed in order to identify the model parameters. Then, the robot model is input-output feedback linearized. On a second stage, for the multi-robot system, a model is obtained by arranging into a single equation all the feedback linearized robot models. This multi-robot model is expressed in terms of formation states by applying a coordinate transformation. The inverse dynamics technique is then applied to design a formation control. The controller can be applied both to positioning and to tracking desired robot formations. The formation control can be centralized or decentralized and scalable to any number of robots. A strategy for rigid formation obstacle avoidance is also proposed. Experimental results validate the control system design.

Robots have poor adaptive ability in terms of formation control and obstacle avoidance control in unknown complex environments. To address this problem, in this paper, we propose a new motion planning method based on flocking control and reinforcement learning. It uses flocking control to implement a multi-robot orderly motion. To avoid the trap of potential fields faced during flocking control, the flocking control is optimized, and the strategy of wall-following behavior control is designed. In this paper, reinforcement learning is adopted to implement the robotic behavioral decision and to enhance the analytical and predictive abilities of the robot during motion planning in an unknown environment. A visual simulation platform is developed in this paper, on which researchers can test algorithms for multi-robot motion control, such as obstacle avoidance control, formation control, path planning and reinforcement learning strategy. As shown by the simulation experiments, the motion planning method presented in this paper can enhance the abilities of multi-robot systems to self-learn and self-adapt under a fully unknown environment with complex obstacles.

Abstract The multi-robot path planning aims to explore a set of non-colliding paths with the shortest sum of lengths for multiple robots. The most popular approach is to artificially decompose the map into discrete small grids before applying heuristic algorithms. To solve the path planning in continuous environments, we propose a decentralized two-stage algorithm to solve the path-planning problem, where the obstacle and inter-robot collisions are both considered. In the first stage, an obstacle- avoidance path-planning problem is mathematically developed by minimizing the travel length of each robot. Specifically, the obstacle-avoidance trajectories are generated by approximating the obstacles as convex-concave constraints. In the second stage, with the given trajectories, we formulate a quadratic programming (QP) problem for velocity control using the control barrier and Lyapunov function (CBF-CLF). In this way, the multi-robot collision avoidance as well as time efficiency are satisfied by adapting the velocities of robots. In sharp contrast to the conventional heuristic methods, path length, smoothness and safety are fully considered by mathematically formulating the optimization problems in continuous environments. Extensive experiments as well as computer simulations are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the proposed path-planning algorithm.

This paper proposes a formation generation algorithm and formation obstacle avoidance strategy for multiple unmanned surface vehicles (USVs). The proposed formation generation algorithm implements an approach combining a virtual structure and artificial potential field (VSAPF), which provides a high accuracy of formation shape keeping and flexibility of formation shape change. To solve the obstacle avoidance problem of the multi-USV system, an improved dynamic window approach is applied to the formation reference point, which considers the movement ability of the USV. By applying this method, the USV formation can avoid obstacles while maintaining its shape. The combination of the virtual structure and artificial potential field has the advantage of less calculations, so that it can ensure the real-time performance of the algorithm and convenience for deployment on an actual USV. Various simulation results for a group of USVs are provided to demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithms.

This research aims to solve the safe navigation problem of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) in deep ocean, which is a complex and changeable environment with various mountains. When an AUV reaches the deep sea navigation, it encounters many underwater canyons, and the hard valley walls threaten its safety seriously. To solve the problem on the safe driving of AUV in underwater canyons and address the potential of AUV autonomous obstacle avoidance in uncertain environments, an improved AUV path planning algorithm based on the deep deterministic policy gradient (DDPG) algorithm is proposed in this work. This method refers to an end-to-end path planning algorithm that optimizes the strategy directly. It takes sensor information as input and driving speed and yaw angle as outputs. The path planning algorithm can reach the predetermined target point while avoiding large-scale static obstacles, such as valley walls in the simulated underwater canyon environment, as well as sudden small-scale dynamic obstacles, such as marine life and other vehicles. In addition, this research aims at the multi-objective structure of the obstacle avoidance of path planning, modularized reward function design, and combined artificial potential field method to set continuous rewards. This research also proposes a new algorithm called deep SumTree-deterministic policy gradient algorithm (SumTree-DDPG), which improves the random storage and extraction strategy of DDPG algorithm experience samples. According to the importance of the experience samples, the samples are classified and stored in combination with the SumTree structure, high-quality samples are extracted continuously, and SumTree-DDPG algorithm finally improves the speed of the convergence model. Finally, this research uses Python language to write an underwater canyon simulation environment and builds a deep reinforcement learning simulation platform on a high-performance computer to conduct simulation learning training for AUV. Data simulation verified that the proposed path planning method can guide the under-actuated underwater robot to navigate to the target without colliding with any obstacles. In comparison with the DDPG algorithm, the stability, training’s total reward, and robustness of the improved Sumtree-DDPG algorithm planner in this study are better.

Multi-robots have shown good application prospects in agricultural production. Studying the synergistic technologies of agricultural multi-robots can not only improve the efficiency of the overall robot system and meet the needs of precision farming but also solve the problems of decreasing effective labor supply and increasing labor costs in agriculture. Therefore, starting from the point of view of an agricultural multiple robot system architectures, this paper reviews the representative research results of five synergistic technologies of agricultural multi-robots in recent years, namely, environment perception, task allocation, path planning, formation control, and communication, and summarizes the technological progress and development characteristics of these five technologies. Finally, because of these development characteristics, it is shown that the trends and research focus for agricultural multi-robots are to optimize the existing technologies and apply them to a variety of agricultural multi-robots, such as building a hybrid architecture of multi-robot systems, SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping), cooperation learning of robots, hybrid path planning and formation reconstruction. While synergistic technologies of agricultural multi-robots are extremely challenging in production, in combination with previous research results for real agricultural multi-robots and social development demand, we conclude that it is realistic to expect automated multi-robot systems in the future.
