The Axis database is the only national information resource on British artists and craftmakers. It contains visual-text data on over 2,500 contemporary British practitioners and is a rapidly growing source of data for researchers, students, curators, commissioning agents, architects, planners and patrons and purchasers of visual arts. Axis also has an important national role in promoting contemporary art and artists and widening access to visual culture.

This chapter addresses the contemporary renewal of landscape art in Canada, arising at the intersection of visual art and cinema. Artworks, installations, and experimental films are discussed according to four categories: figure/ground, spatial illusions, the historicity of landscape, and digital scenery. Landscape—as a distinct art historical genre, conventional cinematic background, and ideological ground—has historically played a key role in Canadian visual culture. The contemporary artists and filmmakers in question have remade landscape in pictorial terms by remixing legacies from the visual arts and cinema and also in political terms, by calling attention to the damaged natural world of the Anthropocene, confronting Indigenous claims to the land, and foregrounding struggles over nationhood, identity, and collective memory.

On the back of the rapid development in public art in recent decades, and in particular graffiti and muralism, interest in them has grown significantly among cultural studies scholars, art critics, architects, sociologists, and urban planners. Numerous works that have appeared in the West and in Ukraine are devoted to various aspects of the visual public art existence. This theme continues to be one of the most relevant for contemporary visual art. This article complements the bunch of acquired knowledge with a detailed study of the impact of socio-cultural processes in society on the changes that took place in monumental painting, graffiti and muralism in Kyiv during 1990–2010, i.e. during the most important changes in politics and society in recent decades. The peculiarities of each historical stage of this influence are analysed and outlined in the study, and the theoretical analysis is displayed by the description of the most characteristic works. Most of them are researched in detail. In addition, the process of decline of monumental painting in the late 1980s and early 1990s is analysed, the factors of graffiti flourishing in the 1990s are identified and highlighted, and the origins of the rapid development of muralism after 2004 and especially after 2014 are explored. At each stage, changes in the themes, aesthetics and functions of public images are traced. The definitions, such as muralism and graffiti, are updated in this paper, taking into account changes in art and the latest achievements in its analysis. The manifestations of the national-patriotic themes in the contemporary art of muralism are considered in detail, the classification of art work on this subject is given, the corresponding examples are given. Such concepts as public art, synthesis of arts, monumental painting, graffiti, muralism are attentively aligned. The study of the nature of the socio-cultural processes and visual arts correlations is promising for further scientific and theoretical developments and the practical aspect for better understanding of the specific works

Compared with the real world, it is virtual and transcendent, however, Network of Visual art provided a real situation of visual experience and psychological experience to a expanding real situation. This essay overviews how Canadian museums and universities have historically accessioned Latin American visual culture and identifies potential ways of sustaining interest, streamlining initiatives, and promoting access. The larger project aims at contributing to a hemispheric and transnational understanding of the history and growth in Canada of the field of Latin American art and its subfields of Pre-Columbian, colonial, modern, and contemporary art. While the study of art history among Canadian museums and universities has kept up with the decades-long interest in Latin American art and visual culture, there remain considerable challenges in bringing Latin American art to the forefront of public consciousness. Despite the pioneering efforts of Canadian museums and universities, Latin American visual art remains largely unknown and underutilized. This essay advocates for better collaboration among institutions involved in Latin American visual art initiatives across Canada, and dialogue among these disparate stakeholders to establish underlying narratives. RESUMEN Este ensayo busca ofrecer una visión general de cómo los museos y universidades canadienses han accedido históricamente a la cultura visual latinoamericana para identificar formas potenciales de mantener el interés, racionalizar iniciativas y promover el acceso. El objetivo del proyecto es contribuir a una comprensión hemisférica y transnacional de la historia y el crecimiento en Canadá del campo del arte latinoamericano y su subcampo del arte precolombino, colonial, moderno y contemporáneo. Si bien el estudio de la historia del arte entre los museos y las universidades canadienses ha seguido el paso del interés que ha habido en el arte y la cultura visual latinoamericanos durante décadas, sigue habiendo desafíos considerables para hacer que el arte latinoamericano ocupe un lugar de primera línea en la conciencia pública. A pesar de los esfuerzos pioneros de museos y universidades canadienses, el arte visual latinoamericano ha permanecido en gran parte desconocido e infrautilizado. Específicamente, este ensayo aboga por una mejor colaboración entre las instituciones canadienses que participan en iniciativas relacionadas con el arte visual de América Latina, y pretende alentar el diálogo entre estas diferentes partes interesadas para establecer narrativas comunes. RESUMO Este ensaio procura fornecer uma visão geral de como os museus e universidades canadenses historicamente acessaram a cultura visual latino-americana a fim de identificar formas potenciais de manter o interesse, simplificar iniciativas e promover o acesso a ela. O projeto visa contribuir para uma compreensão hemisférica e transnacional da história e do crescimento no Canadá do campo da arte latino-americana e seus subcampos – arte pré-colombiana, colonial, moderna e contemporânea. Embora o estudo da história da arte entre os museus e universidades canadenses tenha acompanhado o interesse de décadas na arte e na cultura visual da América Latina, ainda existem desafios consideráveis ​​para levar a arte latino-americana à vanguarda da consciência pública. Apesar dos esforços pioneiros dos museus e universidades canadenses, a arte visual latino-americana permaneceu em grande parte desconhecida e subutilizada. Especificamente, este ensaio defende uma melhor colaboração entre instituições envolvidas em iniciativas de arte visual latino-americanas em todo o Canadá, e o incentivo ao diálogo entre esses diferentes atores para estabelecer narrativas subjacentes.

The article is devoted to the issue of the continuity of the Russian pictorial tradition and the representation of spiritual meanings in contemporary Russian art. The authors aims to consider the image of the Virgin Mary as part of the cultural code of Russia. The object of the research is the materials of the visual art works by contemporary Russian artists of the late 20th and early 21st centuries, studied from the perspective of their Byzantine origins. The subject of this research is the image of the Virgin Mary in contemporary Russian visual art. The result of the research is an understanding of the forms of transformation of the canon of spiritual tradition in contemporary art.

This article discusses contemporary visual arts education current changes. Visual Arts Education is frequently underestimated by most European Curriculum which often gave and still gives priority to other knowledge areas. Nevertheless, culture industries like museums and a wide range of culture and social organizations are doing the opposite, leading visual art education to an increasingly dissemination, even if it is always less than we all expect. This article also focus on a current shift and which seems to be a kind of paradox: visual art education services from alternative culture institutions are becoming integrated on school activities. By recognizing Visual Art Education Value, culture institutions are trying to develop different approaches in order to engage visual arts with communities. By informing and promoting creative thinking, they are trying to reach community involvement and, consequently, breaking down barriers when necessary. In a more and more globalized world, it is urgent to rethink culture, ethnical, social, economical and political diversities and here is where visual arts education can become a more active player. Art always allowed man to create different worlds in our world as Nelson Goodman affirmed. By creating new worlds, art offers possibilities on new world perspectives and therefore it also might make possible a great miracle, which is the possibility of changing into a better world! Isn´t that what next Documenta 14 is doing? Documenta 14, Kassel, considered the world's largest and most prestigious exhibition of contemporary art, will be held in Athens, Greece, and Kassel, Germany, under the following theme: Learning from Athens. Both - visual art education and contemporary art - seem to share this wish and determination in changing to a better world by implicating local, national and international community. And Art always seemed to be a great `educator´ throughout mankind history.

The current research aims to clarify the overlap of visual arts and contemporary different social sciences. It also aims to re-read the art work in a way to highlight the deep interaction of the recipient with the theme of the artwork in order to establish some art concepts which contribute to change and build a new visual culture for the society. This research also seeks to highlight the importance of today’s contemporary art as one of the fields of science. It dialogues many other areas and intersects with a lot of different sciences including the social sciences as a model for intermediary sciences. It shows the overlap between visual arts and different contemporary social sciences. It seeks, moreover, to re-read the artwork so as to highlight the deep interaction of the recipient with the society’s visual culture. The study tries to consider the idea of crossing borders between the various arts by opening onto each other. In other words, it wishes to emphasize the unique artistic pattern which had been considered to be confined within a unit of specialty with no partnership between one art and another or connection to the social sciences can transcend these borders. The research focuses on the experience of the artist Jeff Koons as a model of the complementary relationship between the practice of fine arts associated with many other fields of specialty, most importantly the social sciences. Art, History, and Postwar Fiction explores the ways in which novelists responded to the visual arts from the aftermath of the Second World War up to the present day. If art had long served as a foil to enable novelists to reflect on their craft, this book argues that in the postwar period, novelists turned to the visual arts to develop new ways of conceptualizing the relationship between literature and history. The sense that the novel was becalmed in the end of history was pervasive in the postwar decades. In seeming to bring modernism to a climax whilst repeating its foundational gestures, visual art also raised questions about the relationship between continuity and change in the development of art. In chapters on Samuel Beckett, William Gaddis, John Berger, and W. G. Sebald, and shorter discussions of writers like Doris Lessing, Kathy Acker, and Teju Cole, this book shows that writing about art was often a means of commenting on historical developments of the period: the Cold War, the New Left, the legacy of the Holocaust. Furthermore, it argues that forms of postwar visual art, from abstraction to the readymade, offered novelists ways of thinking about the relationship between form and history that went beyond models of reflection or determination. By doing so, this book also argues that attention to interactions between literature and art can provide critics with new ways to think about the relationship between literature and history beyond reductive oppositions between formalism and historicism, autonomy and context.

In this article we explore the practical use of medialness informed by perception studies as a representation and processing layer for describing a class of works of visual art. Our focus is towards the description of 2D objects in visual art, such as found in drawings, paintings, calligraphy, graffiti writing, where approximate boundaries or lines delimit regions associated to recognizable objects or their constitutive parts. We motivate this exploration on the one hand by considering how ideas emerging from the visual arts, cartoon animation and general drawing practice point towards the likely importance of medialness in guiding the interaction of the traditionally trained artist with the artifact. On the other hand, we also consider recent studies and results in cognitive science which point in similar directions in emphasizing the likely importance of medialness, an extension of the abstract mathematical representation known as ‘medial axis’ or ‘Voronoi graphs’, as a core feature used by humans in perceiving shapes in static or dynamic scenarios. We illustrate the use of medialness in computations performed with finished artworks as well as artworks in the process of being created, modified, or evolved through iterations. Such computations may be used to guide an artificial arm in duplicating the human creative performance or used to study in greater depth the finished artworks. Our implementations represent a prototyping of such applications of computing to art analysis and creation and remain exploratory. Our method also provides a possible framework to compare similar artworks or to study iterations in the process of producing a final preferred depiction, as selected by the artist.
