AbstractPath homology is a powerful method for attaching algebraic invariants to digraphs. While there have been growing theoretical developments on the algebro-topological framework surrounding path homology, bona fide applications to the study of complex networks have remained stagnant. We address this gap by presenting an algorithm for path homology that combines efficient pruning and indexing techniques and using it to topologically analyze a variety of real-world complex temporal networks. A crucial step in our analysis is the complete characterization of path homologies of certain families of small digraphs that appear as subgraphs in these complex networks. These families include all digraphs, directed acyclic graphs, and undirected graphs up to certain numbers of vertices, as well as some specially constructed cases. Using information from this analysis, we identify small digraphs contributing to path homology in dimension two for three temporal networks in an aggregated representation and relate these digraphs to network behavior. We then investigate alternative temporal network representations and identify complementary subgraphs as well as behavior that is preserved across representations. We conclude that path homology provides insight into temporal network structure, and in turn, emergent structures in temporal networks provide us with new subgraphs having interesting path homology.

With the rapid increase in the number of available digital texts in schools, new methodological approaches to studying writing development in education are now emerging. However, with new methodological approaches follow new epistemological challenges. In this article, I examine some of these challenges and discuss how they affect the role of computational linguistics within the field of educational writing research. The article is structured around three main sections. First, I position computational linguistics within the wider field of educational writing research with particular focus on L1 writing and K12 education. Second, I discuss to what extent methods from computational linguistics can provide us with new insights into different aspects of educational writing. Third, I discuss the potential of the concept of affordance to bridge between technology-centered and human-centered methodological approaches, and I relate this idea to recent theoretical developments in the digital humanities. Based on this discussion, I conclude the article with suggestions for possible directions in future writing research.

This paper is an attempt to develop a design-oriented approach to ELT coursebook evaluation, with a particular focus on the internal organization of coursebook units at both intra-unit and inter-unit levels. We believe that looking at coursebooks from the position of the materials designer sheds some additional light on ELT coursebook evaluation. The design-oriented approach to ELT coursebook assessment proposed in the paper goes well beyond the immediate, and often superficial, ‘check-list’ methods commonly used to help teachers select coursebooks. In other words, the design-oriented approach to ELT coursebook assessment enables teachers an insight into ‘the architecture’ of textbooks. On this ‘journey to the centre of ELT textbooks’, we try to highlight how language teaching materials have been resolving the conundrum of the dynamic combination of the What (content), and the How (pedagogy/methodology). In presenting a materials design process, we start off with the assumption that there has always been a broad basis of theoretical and pedagogical notions that can inform the content and organization of ELT coursebooks, and upon which coursebook writers can build when designing instructional materials. The article then discusses three stages of the design process, offering a more detailed analysis of the complex issue of unit structure at intra- and inter-unit levels. We explore different formats of unit structure, its components, ways of creating coherence throughout the unit, and its underlying methodology/pedagogy. The last point prompts the conclusion that today’s ELT materials are produced in response to a perceived market demand that is often at variance with the latest theoretical developments in ELT.

The article substantiates the theoretical basis of the formation of the economic potential of processing enterprises of the agri-food sector, including the clarification of the “economic potential of processing enterprises of the agri-food sector” concept as a set of maximum capabilities of enterprises, due to their available resources for the efficient production of products, goods, works, services in order to meet the market needs taking into account the internal and external environment factors. Unlike the existing ones, this definition includes not only capabilities and resources, but also a specific result, which requires a systematic approach to its assessment. The scientific novelty of theoretical developments lies in a systematic approach to the analysis of the formation of the economic potential of processing enterprises of the agro-industrial complex from the perspective of “resources, maximum capabilities, result, assessment”.

In this paper, a practical application of theoretical developments found in our previous works is explored in relation to atmospheric lidar data. Multifractal structures, previously named “laminar channels”, have been identified in atmospheric profiles—these exhibit cellular and self-structuring properties, and are spatially ordered across the atmospheric profile. Furthermore, these structures have been connected to the spontaneous emergence of turbulent behavior in the calm atmospheric flow. Calculating the location and occurrence of these channels can help identify features of atmospheric evolution, such as the development of the planetary boundary layer (PBL). Employing this theoretical background to atmospheric lidar data, attempts are made to confirm this suggestion and extract information about atmospheric structure and evolution by analyzing turbulent vortex scale dynamics and scale-corresponding Lyapunov exponents that form the basis of identifying the laminar channels in atmospheric lidar profiles. A parameter named “scale laminarity index” is then introduced, which quantifies the relation between vortex scale and chaoticity throughout the profile. Finally, the algorithmic methods employed in this study are described and distributed for future use.

PurposeIn this paper, the authors investigate and celebrate the contributions that qualitative research has made to Career Development International (CDI) and careers scholarship over the past 25 years. The authors highlight the positive impact of understanding the “lived/emic experiences” of individual career actors using qualitative research designs and identify areas for future research.Design/methodology/approachThe authors employ multiple approaches in their investigation. The authors’ enquiry is part conceptual, part critical analysis and part bibliometric visualisation of qualitative papers published in CDI.FindingsThe authors identify the underlying ontological and epistemological assumptions of qualitative research, and the key tenets and contributions of qualitative research published in CDI. Their bibliometric analysis shows the interrelatedness and frequency of topics addressed by qualitative research and published in CDI, revealing areas for further research. While identifying some of the key criteria for rigor in qualitative research, the authors also engage with emerging calls to avoid rigid templates in how qualitative research is designed and implemented. In this regard, authors echo calls for “methodological bricolage” as an approach to qualitative research in the study of careers.Originality/valueThis is the first bibliographic and visual analysis of qualitative research published in a single journal. The authors offer this investigation as a way of looking back and as an invitation looking forward, encouraging further qualitative research in anticipation of future theoretical developments in career scholarship.

The authors propose a differentiated approach to the organization of fixed assets accounting, which consists in structuring the account 01 “Fixed assets” depending on their areas of activity of economic entities. This article also substantiates the composition of analytical accounts of fixed assets in the context of factors affecting the accounting. The study was carried out on an urgent topic - the accounting of fixed assets is undergoing changes due to legislative innovations. In addition, organizational and economic aspects and factors of a specific, industry-specific nature are of no small importance when building a system of accounting for fixed assets. The analysis of the role and significance of the influence of the characteristics of various types of activities of economic entities on the accounting of fixed assets allows us to identify the directions and methods, the use of which will ensure a positive dynamics of the efficiency of the use of fixed assets and the growth of labor productivity. In the course of the research, general scientific methods of cognition were used, such as analysis and synthesis, consistency and complexity, analogy, comparative and logical approach. The organizational and methodological provisions developed by the authors of the article contribute to the development of the methodology of accounting for fixed assets of economic entities engaged in various types of activities. Some of the results of this study can serve as a vector for further practical and theoretical developments, increase the transparency, relevance, and analyticity of information about the activities of an economic entity based on accounting and management accounting data. The recommendations and approaches proposed by the authors of the article can be applied as a basis for improving the accounting and methodological support for the management of fixed assets of an economic entity.

This article develops a complex orientation to linguistic domination and resistance to demonstrate how academic communication can be diversified to facilitate anti-racist scholarship. While it draws from social sciences which provide complex theories of social structuration, it demonstrates how linguists can offer fine-grained analytical tools to track these processes across diverse scales of space, time, and institutions. The objective of this article is to introduce an orientation to language which goes beyond traditional reductive and overdetermined perspectives to accommodate its generative and resistant potential. It introduces translingual practice as accommodating the theoretical developments discussed, and demonstrates how methods of indexical analyses can help scholars study texts and communication across various spatiotemporal scales in achieving structuration. This approach is applied to the writing practice of African American scholar, Geneva Smitherman, to demonstrate how her anti-racist scholarship renegotiates established structures of academic communication and generates change. While this article will help applied linguists to develop an appreciation of writers and writing in constructing diversified academic communication, it can provide linguistic tools to social scientists for tracing the workings of structuration and change at diverse spatiotemporal and social scales of consideration.

Для создания виброакустической защиты судового оборудования необходимо учитывать потоки колебательной энергии, распространяющиеся от источников как через опорные и неопорные связи, так и в виде воздушного шума. В работе представлены математические модели оценки эффективности амортизирующих креплений виброактивных механизмов морских объектов по колебательной мощности, учитываемые при обучении разрабатываемой нейросетевой системы классификации морских целей. Теоретические разработки в области виброзащиты и виброизоляции во многом имеют междисциплинарный характер и опираются на методы теории механизмов и машин, теоретической механики, теории колебаний, теории управления, используются методы инфорьт мационные технологии для оценки, поиска и выбора рациональных проектно-конструкторских решений. Создание амортизирующих устройств, способных защитить объекты от вибраций и ударов и, вместе с тем, обладающих ограниченными размерами, является сложной технической проблемой. В связи с этим первостепенное значение приобретают вопросы теории и расчета адаптивных виброзащитных систем. To create vibro-acoustic protection of ship equipment, it is necessary to take into account the flows of vibrational energy propagating from sources both through support and non-support connections, and in the form of air noise. The paper presents mathematical models for evaluating the effectiveness of shock-absorbing fasteners of vibro-active mechanisms of marine objects by vibrational power, which are taken into account when training the developed neural network system for classifying marine targets. Theoretical developments in the field of vibration protection and vibration isolation are largely interdisciplinary in nature and are based on the methods of the theory of mechanisms and machines, theoretical mechanics, vibration theory, control theory, information technology methods are used to evaluate, search and select rational design solutions. The creation of shock-absorbing devices that can protect objects from vibrations and shocks and, at the same time, have limited dimensions is a complex technical problem. In this regard, the issues of the theory and calculation of adaptive vibration protection systems are of paramount importance.
