Maximum Ratio Principle-Based Estimation of Difference Inter-System Bias

The tight combination model improves the positioning accuracy of the Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) in complex environments by increasing the redundancy of observation. However, the ambiguity cannot be calculated directly because of the correlation between it and the phase difference inter-system bias (DISB) in the model. This paper proposes a method of DISB estimation based on the principle of maximum ratio. From the data analysis, for the standard deviation of code DISB, the improvement of the method can up to 0·179 m with the poor quality data. In addition, compared to the parameter combination method, the standard deviation of all the phase DISB was deceased with the method in the paper. About the phase DISB of GPS L1/Galileo E1, the standard deviation decreased from 0·014/0·022/0·009/0·051 cycles to 0·006/0·015/0·004/0·029 cycles of four baselines, which represents the improvement of 57·14/31·82/55·56/43·14%. About the phase DISB of GPS L1/BDS B1, the standard deviation decreased from 0·014/0·061/0·010/0·052 cycles to 0·002/0·005/0·009/0·004 cycles of four baselines, which represents the improvement of 85·71/91·80/10·00/92·31%.

BeiDou global navigation satellite system (BDS) began to provide positioning, navigation, and timing (PNT) services to global users officially on 31 July, 2020. BDS constellations consist of regional (BDS-2) and global navigation satellites (BDS-3). Due to the difference of modulations and characteristics for the BDS-2 and BDS-3 default civil service signals (B1I/B3I) and the increase of new signals (B1C/B2a) for BDS-3, a systemically bias exists in the receiver-end when receiving and processing BDS-2 and BDS-3 signals, which leads to the inter-system bias (ISB) between BDS-2 and BDS-3 on the receiver side. To fully utilize BDS, the BDS-2 and BDS-3 combined precise time and frequency transfer are investigated considering the effect of the ISB. Four kinds of ISB stochastic models are presented, which are ignoring ISB (ISBNO), estimating ISB as random constant (ISBCV), random walk process (ISBRW), and white noise process (ISBWN). The results demonstrate that the datum of receiver clock offsets can be unified and the ISB deduced datum confusion can be avoided by estimating the ISB. The ISBCV and ISBRW models are superior to ISBWN. For the BDS-2 and BDS-3 combined precise time and frequency transfer using ISBNO, ISBCV, ISBRW, and ISBWN, the stability of clock differences of old signals can be enhanced by 20.18%, 23.89%, 23.96%, and 11.46% over BDS-2-only, respectively. For new signals, the enhancements are −50.77%, 20.22%, 17.53%, and −3.69%, respectively. Moreover, ISBCV and ISBRW models have the better frequency transfer stability. Consequently, we recommended the optimal ISBCV or suboptimal ISBRW model for BDS-2 and BDS-3 combined precise time and frequency transfer when processing the old as well as the new signals.

It is shown that while smaller error index values indicate a better fit of a model to the data, wrong models with poor quality data may exhibit smaller values error index values than some superb models with very high quality data.

his chapter addresses data linkage which is key to using big administrative datasets to improve efficient and equitable services and policies. These benefits need to weigh against potential harms, which have mainly focussed on privacy. In this chapter we argue for the public and researchers to be alert also to other kinds of harms. These include misuses of big administrative data through poor quality data, misleading analyses, misinterpretation or misuse of findings, and restrictions limiting what questions can be asked and by whom, resulting in research not achieved and advances not made for the public benefit. Ensuring that big administrative data are validly used for public benefit requires increased transparency about who has access and whose access is denied, how data are processed, linked and analysed, and how analyses or algorithms are used in public and private services. Public benefits and especially trust require replicable analyses by many researchers not just a few data controllers. Wider use of big data will be helped by establishing a number of safe data repositories, fully accessible to researchers and their tools, and independent of the current monopolies on data processing, linkage, enhancement and uses of data.

The global navigation satellite system (GNSS)-based attitude determination system has attracted more and more attention with the advantages of having simplified algorithms, a low price and errors that do not accumulate over time. However, GNSS signals may have poor quality or lose lock in some epochs with the influence of signal fading and the multipath effect. When the direct attitude determination method is applied, the primary baseline may not be available (ambiguity is not fixed), leading to the inability of attitude determination. With the gradual popularization of low-cost receivers, making full use of spatial redundancy information of multiple antennas brings new ideas to the GNSS-based attitude determination method. In this paper, an attitude angle conversion algorithm, selecting an arbitrary baseline as the primary baseline, is derived. A multi-antenna attitude determination method based on primary baseline switching is proposed, which is performed on a self-designed embedded software and hardware platform. The proposed method can increase the valid epoch proportion and attitude information. In the land vehicle test, reference results output from a high-accuracy integrated navigation system were used to evaluate the accuracy and reliability. The results indicate that the proposed method is correct and feasible. The valid epoch proportion is increased by 16.2%, which can effectively improve the availability of attitude determination. The RMS of the heading, pitch and roll angles are 0.52°, 1.25° and 1.16°.

The present article describes a new and efficient method of Real Time Kinematic (RTK) Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) assisted terrestrial Structure-from-Motion (SfM) photogrammetry without the need for Ground Control Points (GCPs). The system only requires a simple frame that mechanically connects a RTK GNSS antenna to the camera. The system is low cost, easy to transport, and offers high autonomy. Furthermore, not requiring GCPs enables saving time during the in situ acquisition and during data processing. The method is tested for coastal cliff monitoring, using both a Reflex camera and a Smartphone camera. The quality of the reconstructions is assessed by comparison to a synchronous Terrestrial Laser Scanner (TLS) acquisition. The results are highly satisfying with a mean error of 0.3 cm and a standard deviation of 4.7 cm obtained with the Nikon D800 Reflex camera and, respectively, a mean error of 0.2 cm and a standard deviation of 3.8 cm obtained with the Huawei Y5 Smartphone camera. This method will be particularly interesting when simplicity, portability, and autonomy are desirable. In the future, it would be transposable to participatory science programs, while using an open RTK GNSS network.

AbstractLichen element content is a reliable indicator for relative air pollution load in research and monitoring programmes requiring both efficiency and representation of many sites. We tested the value of costly rigorous field and handling protocols for sample element analysis using five lichen species. No relaxation of rigour was supported; four relaxed protocols generated data significantly different from rigorous protocols for many of the 20 validated elements. Minimally restrictive site selection criteria gave quality data from 86% of 81 permanent plots in northern Midwest USA; more restrictive criteria would likely reduce indicator reliability. Use of trained non-specialist field collectors was supported when target species choice considers the lichen community context. Evernia mesomorpha, Flavoparmelia caperata and Physcia aipolia/stellaris were successful target species. Non-specialists were less successful at distinguishing Parmelia sulcata and Punctelia rudecta from lookalikes, leading to few samples and some poor quality data.

Laboratory data supported by granular-medium and inclusion theories indicate that Poisson’s ratio in gas-saturated sand lies within a range of 0–0.25, with typical values of approximately 0.15. However, some well log measurements, especially in slow gas formations, persistently produce a Poisson’s ratio as large as 0.3. If this measurement is not caused by poor-quality data, three in situ situations — patchy saturation, subresolution thin layering, and elastic anisotropy — provide a plausible explanation. In the patchy saturation situation, the well data must be corrected to produce realistic synthetic seismic traces. In the second and third cases, the effect observed in a well is likely to persist at the seismic scale.
