Fine Structural Features of Neurosarcomas

In an electron microscopic study of an extensive series of malignant tumors of the soft tissues, sarcomas derived from elements of the peripheral nervous system were observed to possess unique morphologic features. Since these features were not seen in any of the other types of soft tissue sarcoma, they are useful as diagnostic criteria. They also provide insight into the histogenesis of neurosarcomas.By light microscopy, some neurosarcomas are seen to be composed of compactly grouped, spindle-shaped cells, and intercellular connective tissue is scanty. In other neurosarcomas, dendritic or stellate cells are loosely arranged in a relatively clear, occasionally myxoid-like stroma. The two types of tissue frequently coexist in the same neoplasm, and both are common in benign tumors of the peripheral nerves.Figure 1 shows part of a tumor cell from a neurosarcoma of the loosely-textured variety. The cytoplasm extends into a slender branching process containing longitudinally-oriented microtubules and fine filaments.

Inflammatory myofibroblastic tumor (IMT) can occur rarely in the soft tissue or joint of the limb. We retrospectively collected IMT cases of these rare sites and analyzed their clinical and imaging appearance. Thirteen cases of IMT were clinically diagnosed and underwent surgical procedures, pathological analyses, and postsurgical follow-up in our two hospitals. Other than one case of IMT of the bladder wall that presented with gross hematuria, none presented with local swelling, fever, or weakness. All the cases of IMT occurring at the bone showed destruction and parosteal soft tissue masses. The boundaries between the mass and normal bone were vague, without calcifications or any periosteal reaction. Five cases of IMF showed continuous enhancement on CT; seven cases demonstrated iso- or hyposignal intensity on T1WI; one case showed hypersignal intensity on T1WI, and eight cases demonstrated a hypersignal intensity signal on T2WI. All the masses located in soft tissues showed clear and sharp boundaries with different sizes of the swelling regions surrounding muscle interspaces. Three cases showed homogeneous enhancement, one case demonstrated heterogeneous enhancement, and two cases showed edge enhancement on enhanced MRI scans. On pathology, all the lesions showed an absence of a pseudocapsule, and four cases of ALK were positive. The radiological manifestations of IMT located at the soft tissue and bones were similar to benign tumors in shape; however, peritumoral edema, parosteal soft tissue, and the invasive rim of IMT are similar to the features of malignant tumors. Different radiological methods should be used to obtain an accurate diagnosis.

The immunohistochemical expression of p63, ΔNp63, and p53 was studied in mixed tumors of canine mammary glands (13 benign mixed tumors and 19 carcinomas arising from benign mixed tumors) to determine the role of p63 and its isoform ΔNp63 in the development of mixed tumors, as well as to assess its relation with p53. P63 was expressed in myoepithelial cells of all benign mixed tumors and in 18 of 19 carcinomas in mixed tumors. The p63-negative carcinoma in mixed tumors was invasive, and a loss of p63 was detected in the other malignant tumors showing a discontinuous p63-stained myoepithelial layer. ΔNp63 was expressed in all benign mixed tumors but only in p63-positive carcinomas in mixed tumors. Despite its positive correlation with p63 expression in carcinomas in mixed tumors ( r = 0.8323, P < .00001), ΔNp63 expression showed a decrease in benign tumors. Positivity for p53 was detected in 2 of 13 and 1 of 19 benign mixed tumors and carcinomas in mixed tumors, respectively. There was no correlation between p63 or ΔNp63 and p53 expression. Our data support the notion that the decrease of p63 expression, in particular of its isoform ΔNp63, seems to be an important factor in the development of carcinomas in mixed tumors.

Objective To evaluate the performance of mesothelin, CA125, HE4 and ROMA index in the detection of malignant ovarian tumors. Study Design This is a cross-sectional study including 199 women with adnexal masses (67 with malignant tumors and 132 with benign tumors) and 150 healthy women (controls). We used a recursive multivariate partitioning algorithm to assess the contribution of each of the serum markers and the ROMA index to the discrimination of women with malignant tumors. Also, the areas under the ROC curves (AUC) for each of the serum markers and for the ROMA index were compared using the Venkatraman's projection-permutation test. Results In the recursive model, CA125 had the best performance in discriminating women with malignant tumors. In women with normal-range CA125 levels, none of the other markers contributed to the discrimination of women with malignant tumors. In women with elevated CA125 levels, elevated HE4 levels were associated with an increased risk of harboring a malignant tumor. The AUC for mesothelin was smaller than that for all the other curves, and both the ROMA index and CA125 had better AUC than HE4. Conclusion In women with normal CA125 levels, neither mesothelin nor HE4 contributed to discriminate women with malignant ovarian tumors; however, for women with elevated CA125 levels HE4 may help discriminating those who have a malignant ovarian tumor.

The use of osteosynthesis materials in orthopedics is fundamental in the surgical management of patients presenting with various pathologies of the locomotor system, in most cases trauma, but also malign and benign tumors. The risk that these materials could have in inducing malignant transformation of benign tumors or in the onset of primary malignant tumors, was rarely studied. On the one hand, primary malignant tumors of the locomotor system are much less frequent than other kind of neoplasms (for example Ewing sarcoma has an incidence of 1-3 cases / 1.000.000 people / year, ostosarcoma has an incidence of 2 cases / 1.000.000 people / year). On the other hand, usually there is a time window of several years, different from one case to another, from the moment of action of the etiopathogenic factor to the moment of revealing the presence of a neoplastic disease. Based on our clinical practice on a few clinical cases, we intend to study more thoroughly the etiology of primary bone malignant tumors in general and the role of the osteosynthesys materials in this matter especially.

Echinodermata is a phylum of marine invertebrates which has been extant since Cambrian time (c.a. 500 m.y. before the present). Modern examples of echinoderms include sea urchins, sea stars, and sea lilies (crinoids). The endoskeletons of echinoderms are composed of plates or ossicles (Fig. 1) which are with few exceptions, porous, single crystals of high-magnesian calcite. Despite their single crystal nature, fracture surfaces do not exhibit the near-perfect {10.4} cleavage characteristic of inorganic calcite. This paradoxical mix of biogenic and inorganic features has prompted much recent work on echinoderm skeletal crystallography. Furthermore, fossil echinoderm hard parts comprise a volumetrically significant portion of some marine limestones sequences. The ultrastructural and microchemical characterization of modern skeletal material should lend insight into: 1). The nature of the biogenic processes involved, for example, the relationship of Mg heterogeneity to morphological and structural features in modern echinoderm material, and 2). The nature of the diagenetic changes undergone by their ancient, fossilized counterparts. In this study, high resolution TEM (HRTEM), high voltage TEM (HVTEM), and STEM microanalysis are used to characterize tha ultrastructural and microchemical composition of skeletal elements of the modern crinoid Neocrinus blakei.

Abstract. Folk wisdom tells us that additional time to make a decision helps us to refrain from the first impulse to take the bird in the hand. However, the question why the time to decide plays an important role is still unanswered. Here we distinguish two explanations, one based on a bias in value accumulation that has to be overcome with time, the other based on cognitive control processes that need time to set in. In an intertemporal decision task, we use mouse tracking to study participants’ responses to options’ values and delays which were presented sequentially. We find that the information about options’ delays does indeed lead to an immediate bias that is controlled afterwards, matching the prediction of control processes needed to counter initial impulses. Hence, by using a dynamic measure, we provide insight into the processes underlying short-term oriented choices in intertemporal decision making.

Cellular uptake of 67Ga-labelled transferrin by the tumor tissue was studied in rats with tumors of different malignancy and different tumor mass using the slowly growing Morris hepatoma 5123C, the moderately growing Novikoff hepatoma and the very fast and aggressive Yoshida hepatoma AH130. The cellular accumulation of 67Ga-transferrin was found to correlate with the proliferation activity of the tumor. The 67Ga-transferrin concentration in the very fast growing Yoshida hepatoma was 4.8 times higher than the concentration in the slowly growing Morris hepatoma. The uptake of 67Ga-transferrin by the tumors resulted in a faster disappearance of circulating 67Ga-transferrin from the blood. The rate of disappearance correlated with the proliferation activity and the spread of the tumors. Using tumors of identical size the elimination of 67Ga-transferrin from the blood was much faster in the rats with Yoshida hepatoma than in those with the slowly growing Morris hepatoma. On the other hand, using tumors of different tumor size it could be demonstrated that the rate of disappearance of 67Ga-transferrin from the blood correlated directly with tumor mass. It is concluded that cellular incorporation of transferrin within the tumor cells results in a loss of circulating transferrin, which correlates with tumor mass and proliferation of tumor. This mechanism is supposed to be the cause for the hypotransferrinemia seen in patients with malignant tumors.

Among the qualities that distinguish dance from other types of human behavior and interaction are the creation and breaking of synchrony and symmetry. The combination of symmetry and synchrony can provide complex interactions. For example, two dancers might make very different movements, slowing each time the other sped up: a mirror symmetry of velocity. Examining patterns of synchrony and symmetry can provide insight into both the artistic nature of the dance, and the nature of the perceptions and responses of the dancers. However, such complex symmetries are often difficult to quantify. This paper presents three methods – Generalized Local Linear Approximation, Time-lagged Autocorrelation, and Windowed Cross-correlation – for the exploration of symmetry and synchrony in motion-capture data as is it applied to dance and illustrate these with examples from a study of free-form dance. Combined, these techniques provide powerful tools for the examination of the structure of symmetry and synchrony in dance.

During 2011-2012, 56 patients diagnosed with parotid tumors were admitted to the Maxillofacial Surgery Department of “Lucian Blaga” University and in Euroclinic Hospital. 72% were benign tumors and 28% malignant. All patients received surgical treatment (total or partial parotidectomy). For the malignant tumors, radiotherapy was added to the modal treatment (94% of the cases). Pleomorphic adenoma was encountered in 70% of the benign cases, followed by Warthin tumor in 15%. Adenoid cystic carcinoma was noticed in 31% of the malignant cases, mucoepidermoid carcinoma in 25% of the cases, and squamous carcinoma and non-Hodgkin lymphoma on 12.5% of the malignant cases.
