AbstractEvent tourism is accompanied by social, economic and environmental benefits and costs. The assessment of this form of tourism has however largely focused on the social and economic perspectives, while environmental assessments have been bound to a destination-based approach. The application of the Ecological Footprint methodology allows for these environmental assessment boundaries to be extended. This case study applies the footprint methodology to the Australian Association for Environmental Education (AAEE) Biennial Conference held in Adelaide in 2004. The results of the case study provide important insight into the planning and delivery of future events for the Association and event managers.

In 2007 Professor Frank Fisher was named Australia's inaugural Environmental Educator of the Year (by the Australian Association for Environmental Education). Frank lived a life driven by a determination to engage fully with the world around him. As a young electrical engineer, Frank became convinced of the need for education and research about how we shape the world around us, and contributed to the establishment of the first Australian Masters of Sustainability program at Monash University in 1973. Typified by exercises such as taking students to sit in the middle of major roads, Frank's teaching approach aimed to help students understand the social systems that shape our understanding of and impact on the world around us.

In early November 2014, over 300 delegates met in Hobart, Tasmania for the 18th Australian Association for Environmental Education (AAEE) Biennial Conference. Titled ‘Sustainability: Smart Strategies for the 21st Century’, this conference sought to bring together innovative thinking, practice and research in the field of environmental and sustainability education. This special conference issue of the Australian Journal of Environmental Education captures a snapshot of some of that thinking. While it is by no means a comprehensive account of the many conversation threads that permeated the conference, we hope that readers will find the articles in this special issue a stimulus to your thinking and practice.

AbstractThe first research symposium, organised in conjunction with the Australian Association for Environmental Education (AAEE) biennial conference, began with a dialogue between scholars at three different academic career stages. As we all entered the field at different periods in its development, the first part of our presentation and this article provide our perspectives on the context, approaches and issues that characterised the field at the time we became involved in environmental education (EE) and EE research. The second part of this article presents the lessons we have learnt from EE research, and where we see the field headed in the future.

Open Building and IFD (Industrial Flexible Demountable) building are philosophies that aim to create high quality buildings with increased flexibility and better environmental characteristics. However, a successful adoption of IFD principles has not yet occurred because of concerns for the types of connections that are needed between building components. Therefore, this paper describes PhD research at the University of Twente that has the objective of designing a typology of flexible interfaces for IFD building that can be widely applied in the construction industry and aims to standardize connections, at the various levels of technical composition of a building, to create compatibility between building products from different suppliers. Such a typology of interfaces will increase the re-use and recycling of building parts, resulting in the increased sustainability of the building process. Furthermore, it will help accelerate the industrialization of the housing industry and mass customization of housing. A preliminary case study, in which a sustainable, flexible bathroom is designed, illustrates the various types of interfaces that can be applied, based on existing research. The paper illustrates the importance of interfaces, and aims to increase environmental benefits of buildings (less construction waste), improve the social aspects (higher user satisfaction in buildings) and achieve economical advantages (lower overall costs) by designing new interfaces.

Multitemporality of land use and coverage using the google earth platform: case study of the socio-educational center Fazendinha Esperança, Marituba, Pará A B S T R A C TIn view of the importance of the Fazendinha Esperança Socio-Educational Center (CESEFE) in improving municipal management, which has been promoting actions for the improvement of socio-environmental issues in Marituba (Pará), from projects focused on the environment, we sought to analyze the changes of CESEFE land use and coverage in the years 2006 and 2019. In this study geotechnology was used to analyze the dynamics of land use in the studied location, through the Geographic Information System (GIS) and the Google Earth platform, based on the modifications of the area in the years 2006 and 2019. Therefore, the use and coverage of land was classified as: physical structure; Agricultural production; afforestation and others. Qualitative and quantitative analyzes in the years studied were performed based on visual interpretations based on the results of the GIS attribute tables. All classes have undergone changes, resulting in a significant decrease in agricultural production, initially classified at 33% and at the end with 18% of the total area. However, there was a considerable increase in the afforestation of the space, since it initially held 2% and currently represents 32.5% of the property. The two classes are interconnected because they are part of the environmental education project. Therefore, it is possible to identify the Centro Sócio Educativo Fazendinha Esperança (CESEFE), as an organization that works in the social, environmental and economic improvement of some maritubenses neighborhoods. The decrease in agricultural production is justified by the insertion of practices linked to the productive Yard system, corroborating the increase in afforestation. Keywords: geotechnology, dynamics of land use, environmental education.

Como resultados, visa-se relatar a experiência de participantes da oficina apresentada.ABSTRACTThis paper presents a environmental education experience at the Federal University of Rio Grande of the Norte. The goal of the workshop was to promote environmental education in the university environment for the academic community and the society. We used bibliographical research, methods for communicative exposition and case study to assemble the workshop with a qualitative purpose to discuss the importance of environmental education in the reduction of solid waste destined landfills. For the theoretical basis, authors such as Ignacy Sachs and Enrique Leff have thought about sustainable development as something to be achieved through environmental education. The research is justified by the need to disseminate content aimed at environmental knowledge, in this case, the importance of the recyclable material collector activity. Even as a very stigmatized profession, it is essential for the achievement of environmental sustainability. It can be assumed that environmental education is a necessary mean to reduce the social stigma of the profession of collector of recyclable material, as well as to promote environmental rationality. Therefore, it is intended to report the experience of participants of the workshop presented.

The 19th Biennial Conference for the Australian Association for Environmental Education (AAEE) was a wonderful milestone for any national organisation. Our South Australian hosts were very excited to see us all descend on Adelaide in September 2016 to take up their offer of ‘Tomorrow Making’. ‘Our Present to the Future’ was four days filled with considering what we were working on and what we are working towards, both individually and collectively. Youth presentations, collegial collaborations, and sharing of goodwill and thought resulted in a generative conference, just like we have come to expect from environmental educators. Sally and I are pleased to maintain the tradition of guest editing the AJEE Special Issue, showcasing six papers as a representation of the knowledge shared, considered, adapted, and devised at the conference.

Urbanization processes and urban environmental degradation: problematization in the context of Youth and Adult EducationABSTRACTThis article aims to analyze the insertion of environmental education in youth and adult education from the problematization of urbanization processes and urban environmental degradation in the municipality of Capão da Canoa (RS). The instruments used for data collection were questionnaires (objective and subjective) for the students, ecological footprint tests and debates. The involvement and participation of the students brought the movement of belonging, of historical, social and environmental reflections about their community. Environmental education offers conditions to educate for citizenship, for critical and political thinking about social and local problems that that community faces. The ecological footprint test enabled a comparative analysis to developed countries, the social and environmental conditions of each in relation to the students of the class, since the result was lower than these places where the use of natural resources and waste disposal. It is concluded, from the actions developed, that the most important result of this research is the emergence of how much is necessary spaces of experience in Environmental Education at all levels of schooling and segments of society, promoting reflections and enabling actions to transform their realities. Keywords: Environmental degradation; Environmental education; Youth and adult education. This paper addresses the fields of social and service design in development contexts, practice-based and constructive design research. A framework for social design for services will be explored through the survey of existing literature, specifically by drawing on eight doctoral theses that were produced by the World Design research group. The work of World Design researcher-designers was guided by a strong ethos of social and service design for development in marginalised communities. The paper also draws on a case study in Namibia and South Africa titled ‘My Dream World’. This case study presents a good example of how the social design for services framework functions in practice during experimentation and research in the field. The social design for services framework transfers the World Design group’s research results into practical action, providing a tool for the facilitation of design and research processes for sustainable development in marginal contexts.
