ABSTRACTA symposium on ageing research was held at the 7th Australian Developmental Conference in July 1992. The theme of the symposium was the effect of ageing on cognition. Empirical and theoretical papers presented evidence for cognitive decline in late adulthood. However, discussion of the modifiability of cognition tempered the pessimistic view of cognitive ability in old age. Interdisciplinary studies such as the Berlin Aging Study provide hope for the discovery of factors affecting successful ageing by examining the interaction between health, personality, social factors, and cognition.

ABSTRACTBackground:The prognostic value of subjective memory complaints (SMCs) in the diagnosis of dementia of the Alzheimer's type is unclear. While some studies have found an association between SMCs and cognitive decline, many have found a stronger association with depression, which raises questions about their diagnostic utility. Methods:We examined the cross-sectional association between SMC severity (as measured using the MAC-Q, a brief SMC questionnaire) and affect, memory, and Alzheimer's disease (AD) biomarkers (β-amyloid deposition and the apolipoprotein E ε4 (APOEε4) allele) in healthy elderly controls (HC; M = 78.74 years, SD = 6.7) and individuals with mild cognitive impairment (MCI; M = 72.74 years, SD = 8.8). We analyzed a subset of individuals drawn from the Australian Imaging Biomarkers and Lifestyle (AIBL) Study of Aging. Results:SMCs were more severe in MCI patients than in HCs. SMC severity was related to affective variables and the interaction between age and group membership (HC/MCI). Within the HC group, SMC severity was related to affective variables only, while severity correlated only with age in the MCI group. SMCs were not related to cognitive variables or AD biomarkers. Conclusion:SMCs were related to solely by poorer mood (greater depressive and anxious symptomatology) in the cognitively healthy elderly however mean levels were subclinical. This finding argues for the assessment of affective symptomatology in conjunction with cognitive assessment in elderly memory complainers. Future AIBL research will focus on assessing other AD biomarkers, such as brain atrophy and Aβ plasma markers, in relation to complaint severity. Once our 36-month follow-up data are collected, we propose to assess whether SMCs can predict future cognitive decline.

The article presents a sociological analysis of the mortality rate of the population of post-Soviet Russia. The socio-demographic characteristics of respondents who passed away due to diseases of the circulatory system, respiratory system, cancer, suicide, homicide, external causes and due to the old age are analyzed. Statistical data of Rosstat (2018) and sociological databases of RLMS-HSE (2001–2017) are used as an empirical basis, the results of the analysis are consistent. In the conditions of Russia's depopulation, not only the health of an individual is important, but also the health of the nation as a whole. As the analysis reveals, only 5% of the population of modern Russia die of old age, while 95% of deaths are a consequence of social factors. In the opinion of the author the reasons for this situation are the optimization of the Russian health care system, the "modernization" of the economy, a dangerous ecological situation, degradation of the institutions of family and marriage, of the educational institutions, unemployment, low incomes of the population, etc. The article analyses the social factors affecting the causes of death of men and women, socio-demographic portraits of the deceased are given. The author demonstrates the unfolding demographic catastrophe of modern Russia - a decrease in the birth rate and an increase in mortality, that will inevitably be followed by an economic collapse and social chaos. The analyzed problem is not unique and characteristic only for Russia. This catastrophe looms over the countries of Eastern Europe and the Baltic states. The data from the Russia Longitudinal Monitoring Survey by the National Research University Higher School of Economics and Demoscope LLC with the participation of the Population Center of the University of North Carolina (Chapel Hill) and the Institute of Sociology of the Federal Research Sociological Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences (Moscow) was used as an empirical sociological basis for the study.

Improving the quality in order to keep up with the trend in the world is the vital task of training institutions today. Training institutions need to grasp market needs and satisfy the requirements of customers - learners. Nadiri, H., Kandampully, J & Hussain, K. (2009) argue that the managers in education need to apply market strategies that are being used by manufacturing and business enterprises and need to be aware that the role of training institutions is a service industry which is responsible for satisfying learner needs (Elliott & Shin, 2002). Currently, there have been many researches on students’ satisfaction. However, each research has its own objectives and is conducted on different scales. This study is implemented to provide information about the factors affecting master students’ satisfaction with the training service at VNU School of Interdisciplinary Studies (VNU SIS). Through it, the research offers a number of solutions to improving the satisfaction level of the master students at VNU SIS in the coming time.

In 1995, the Latina adolescent birth rate surpassed that of African Americans for the first time. This article investigates cultural and social factors affecting the initiation of sexual intercourse among Latina adolescent mothers in Los Angeles. The data are from life history interviews with forty young mothers and their partners conducted in 1994 to 1997. Results suggest that sexual intercourse is initiated within the context of the couple's developing relationship, and that the course of relationships is highly scripted. Men pressure for sex and women resist. Women should be ignorant about sex, but control access to intercourse. Sex is never discussed. Thus, it is unexpected, and contraception other than withdrawal is not used. This script places young Latinas at enormous risk for pregnancy and STDs.
