AbstractThe Gompertz is one of a family of growth functions that, when the environment (e.g. food, housing) is non-limiting, provides a useful description of growth as a comparatively simple, single equation. It has three parameters of which the important ones are mature size, A, and the rate parameter, B. Estimates of A and B, however, are highly correlated and defining their separate values for individual animals is problematic. This problem was explored using five methods for estimating the parameters, or transformations of them, to describe the growth of two genotypes of Suffolk sheep kept under non-limiting conditions. One genotype was under selection for high lean growth rate and the other was its control. Live weights that were collected at least fortnightly from near birth to 150 days of age over a 9-year period on 1934 lambs were used. The Gompertz form adequately described the growth of the great majority of the lambs evaluated. When considering A and B as a lumped parameter, Z = A·B, and fitting Z, B and an initial condition (a transformed birth weight) as the parameters, the problems in estimation were substantially overcome as shown by a low correlation of Z with estimates of B both within and across animals. Usefully Z has a biological interpretation in that Z/e is the maximum daily growth rate. Since the Gompertz form adequately described growth in these sheep, the extent of genetic co-variation for the growth parameters values (A, B, Z) was estimated to determine if they were amenable to selection. A weighted univariate animal model was fitted. Mature size, A, and the rate parameter, B, were moderately heritable (0·37 (s.e. 0·04) and 0·38 (s.e. 0·05), respectively) as was live weight at 150 days of age (0·31 (s.e. 0·06)). However there was a substantial negative genetic relationship between A and B (–0·48). Z was highly heritable (0·72 (s.e.0·05)). After 9 years of selection, the genotype selected for high lean growth rate was heavier (P < 0·001) at 150 days of age (5·2 kg) and at maturity (6·6 kg), with a maximum growth rate (Z/e) that was 1·12 times that of the control. Our lumped parameter Z, in effect a rate parameter scaled for mature size, avoided problems in estimating A and B and, in so doing, offers a general and robust description of lamb growth amenable to selection.

Methods to genetically improve gross food efficiency (GFE) in cattle usually rely on a high genetic correlation between GFE and growth rate. Estimating this genetic correlation for cattle grazing tropical pastures is extremely difficult, so a model of individual variation in growth has been developed based on component traits which are known to affect growth rate. The model assumes that there is individual variation in mature size, maintenance requirement, intake to maintenance ratio, and susceptibility to heat stress and to tick and worm infestation. Nutritional level is assumed to interact with maintenance requirement, so that under good nutrition a high level of maintenance requirement maximises growth rate, whereas under a low level of nutrition a low maintenance requirement leads to maximum growth rate. The model predicts that in the presence of environmental stress the correlation between growth rate and mature size is only about 0.5, and there is no correlation between mature size and GFE. Growth rate and GFE are correlated with resistance to parasite and heat stress and to intake:maintenance ratio. Consequently growth rate and GFE are highly correlated, especially under stressful environmental conditions. The model predicts that growth rate in one environment will be highly genetically correlated with growth rate in other similar environments.

Two synthetic lines of rabbits were used in the experiment. Line V, selected on litter size, and line R, selected on growth rate. Ninety-six animals were randomly collected from 48 litters, taking a male and a female each time. Richards and Gompertz growth curves were fitted. Sexual dimorphism appeared in the line V but not in the R. Values for b and k were similar in all curves. Maximum growth rate took place in weeks 7 to 8. A break due to weaning could be observed in weeks 4 to 5. Although there is a remarkable similarity of the values of all the parameters using data from the first 20 weeks only, the higher standard errors on adult weight would make 30 weeks the preferable time to take data for live-weight growth curves.

The idea that an animal of a given kind has, and grows to, a final or mature size is a useful one and several equations have been proposed that describe such growth to maturity (Winsor, 1932; Parks, 1982; Taylor, 1982). The Gompertz is one of these growth functions and describes in a comparatively simple, single equation the sigmoidal pattern of growth. It has 3 parameters, only 2 of which are important - mature size A and the rate parameter B. Estimates of A and B, however, are highly correlated. Considering A and B as a lumped parameter (AB) may overcome this problem. A Gompertz, or any other, growth function is not expected to describe all growth curves. When the environment (e.g., feed, housing) is non-limiting, it may provide a useful and succinct description of growth. The objectives of this study were to examine: (i) if the Gompertz equation adequately describes the growth of two genotypes of sheep under conditions designed to be non-limiting; and, (ii) if the lumped parameter AB has more desirable properties for estimation than A and B separately.

This study assessed the efficacy of tin and Polyethylenglycol (PEG-3) tallow aminopropylamine in different concentrations on Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) biofilms to establish a new screening process for different antimicrobial agents and to gain more information on the antibacterial effects of these agents on cariogenic biofilms. Isothermal microcalorimetry (IMC) was used to determine differences in two growth parameters: lag time and growth rate; additionally, reduction in active biofilms was calculated. Experimental mouth rinses with 400 and 800 ppm tin derived from stannous fluoride (SnF2) revealed results (43.4 and 49.9% active biofilm reduction, respectively) similar to meridol mouth rinse (400 ppm tin combined with 1,567 ppm PEG-3 tallow aminopropylamine; 55.3% active biofilm reduction) (p &gt; 0.05), while no growth of S. mutans biofilms was detected during 72 h for samples treated with an experimental rinse containing 1,600 ppm tin (100% active biofilm reduction). Only the highest concentration (12,536 ppm) of rinses containing PEG-3 tallow aminopropylamine derived from amine fluoride (AmF) revealed comparable results to meridol (57.5% reduction in active biofilm). Lower concentrations of PEG-3 tallow aminopropylamine showed reductions of 16.9% for 3,134 ppm and 33.5% for 6,268 ppm. Maximum growth rate was significantly lower for all the samples containing SnF2 than for the samples containing control biofilms (p &lt; 0.05); no differences were found between the control and all the PEG-3 tallow aminopropylamine (p &gt; 0.05). The growth parameters showed high reproducibility rates within the treated groups of biofilms and for the controls; thus, the screening method provided reliable results.

SUMMARYFifty-four pigs weaned at 3 weeks of age were allocated at an average weight of 5·4 kg to two experiments to examine the effects of diets having digestible energy (DE) concentrations ranging from 2910 to 3940 kcal/kg.In the first experiment pig growth performance and the dry-matter digestibility of the experimental diets were measured between 3 and 8 weeks of age. The composition of the carcass at 8 weeks of age was correlated with the composition of various carcass joints.In the second experiment pig growth performance was measured over the live-weight range 5-4 to 20 kg.The findings were:1. Growth rate was linearly related to DE intake.2. The optimum DE level for maximum growth was 3640 kcal/kg.3. The efficiency of utilization of DE for growth did not vary in the first experiment but was poorest at a DE concentration of 3245 kcal/kg in the second.4. The DE content of the diet had no significant effect on carcass characteristics at 8 weeks of age in the first experiment or at 20 kg live weight in the second.5. The proportion of fat and lean in the 8-week carcass was significantly (P < 0·01) correlated with that of the shoulder joint.

A study was carried out on five lowland farms in Northern Ireland over 3 years to investigate the effect of crossbred ewe and ram genotype on ewe prolificacy, lamb viability and weaned lamb output. Four crossbred ewe genotypes were sourced from six hill farms involved in a previous study – Bluefaced Leicester×Blackface (BLXB), Texel×Blackface (TXB), Suffolk×Cheviot (SXCH) and Texel×Cheviot (TXCH). On each farm, groups of 20–30 of each crossbred ewe genotype were mated with Suffolk or Texel rams. Throughout the 3 years of the study, the ewe genotypes lambed at 1, 2 and 3 years of age. Within each of the ram breeds, high lean growth index rams sourced from UK sire reference schemes were compared with rams sourced from flocks not involved in objective genetic improvement programmes (control). BLXB ewes were the most prolific of the four ewe genotypes producing 1.73 lambs per ewe lambed compared with 1.47 for TXB, 1.46 for SXCH and 1.41 for TXCH (P<0.001). Lamb mortality was similar for the four ewe genotypes, thus number of lambs weaned was greatest for the BLXB ewes (P<0.001) with the other three crosses producing similar numbers of lambs. A greater proportion (P<0.05) of SXCH ewes lambed without assistance compared with BLXB and TXB ewes and a greater proportion of TXCH ewes had abundant supplies of colostrum compared with the other crosses (P<0.10). Output of weaned lamb per ewe lambed and per ewe metabolic live weight (P<0.001) was greatest in the BLXB ewes. Ewe productivity, prolificacy, number of lambs weaned and the proportion of ewes lambing without assistance increased with ewe age (P<0.001). Lamb growth rate from birth to 6 weeks and from birth to weaning increased with ewe age (P<0.05). Crossbred ewes lambing at 3 years old had a greater output of weaned lamb compared with ewes lambing at 1 and 2 years old (P<0.001). Ram genotype had no effect on ewe prolificacy, lamb viability or pre-weaning growth rates, although Texel-sired lambs had lower birth weights than Suffolk-sired lambs and control-sired lambs had lower birth weights than high lean index-sired lambs (P<0.05).

Data over two years on a total of 149 Shorthorn bulls from a closed herd under direct selection for yearling weight were used to examine line differences in carcass yield and quality and to evaluate relationships between live performance and carcass yield and quality. No significant differences [Formula: see text] in performance or carcass data between control and selected lines were apparent in 1967. However, in 1968 bulls from the selected line were heavier at slaughter (470.5 kg vs. 441.8 kg), their carcasses contained more kidney fat (9.14 kg vs. 8.46 kg), and they had larger loin eye area but smaller weight-adjusted loin eye area. Rate of gain was superior for the selected line whether examined as live-weight, carcass weight, trimmed primal cut weight or lean weight per day of age. There were no significant differences between lines for percent fat, lean or bone in primal cuts, or for rib fat thickness, percent trimmed prime cuts, percent seam fat, muscle/bone and hind/front ratios, or for chemical composition or tenderness evaluations of the longissimus dorsi. Averaged over the two years and at the same averaged slaughter weights (418 days), selected-line bulls produced a significantly greater quantity of total carcass, of trimmed primal cuts and of total lean than did the control-line bulls; selection for yearling weight appeared to have been effective in increasing rate of lean growth. Phenotypic correlations indicated that liveweight/day of age was more highly related to variation in lean growth rate than growth rate of fat. From 20 to 60% of the variation in wholesale cut weights was associated with differences in rate of gain. Distribution of the gains was little influenced by rate of gain. Tenderness evaluations were not related to live performance.

AbstractThe growth of a nestling during the first few weeks after hatching is crucial for its further life and is sensitive to the conditions experienced during this period. Among species exhibiting Sexual Size Dimorphism (SSD), one of the most important factors influencing growth parameters is the sex of the hatchlings. In this study, we tested whether sex and other factors (hatching date, egg volume, brood size and sex ratio in the brood) were related to sex on growth parameters in Whiskered Tern (Chlidonias hybrida) chicks. In this species, males are 3%–10% larger than females when adult. At hatching, only the total head length was greater in males than females, but values close to fledging were greater for most of the measured parameters (3%—tarsus, 4%—total head length, 13%—body mass). Moreover, the maximum body mass growth rate was higher in males but females entered the rapid growth phase somewhat earlier and achieved the final total head length sooner. Nestling growth was also significantly correlated with brood size and hatching date, though mostly negatively (e.g. lower tarsus and total head length asymptote, lower maximum growth rate and growth rate constant of total head length in bigger and later clutches). The occurrence of SSD during the nestling period and higher maximum growth rate of body mass in males indicates that the costs of raising sons may be higher than of raising daughters. However, we did not find evidence of either sex-biased nestling mortality or skewed sex ratio.

The CAMDA group breeding scheme was established in 1976. Its objective is to increase lamb growth rate, mature size and maternal ability of the Welsh Mountain sheep while retaining their hardiness and breed type. The opportunity to achieve this goal depends on the extent of genetic variation within the breed for these traits. The objective of this study was to estimate the amount of variation in 18-week live weight attributable to the lamb genotype (direct) and dam maternal ability, both genetic and environmental, in Welsh Mountain sheep within this scheme.A total of 12954 records of 18-week live weight of Welsh Mountain lambs collected between 1976 and 1995 from 4 flocks of the CAMDA scheme were considered. The data were edited for small contemporary groups and for incomplete performance or pedigree recording.

This study was performed to optimize Salmonella Typhimurium recovery from raw duck wings with five nonselective broths (buffered peptone water, tryptic soy broth, lactose broth, universal preenrichment broth, nutrient broth) and four selective broths (selenite broth, BAX System MP media [MP], Salmonella AD media [AD], ONE broth-Salmonella [OB]). Healthy or heat-injured (50 and 85% injury) cells were inoculated at a level of 102, 101, or 100 CFU/25 g on raw duck wings. Growth was modeled using DMfit with four growth parameters: lag-phase duration, maximum growth rate, doubling time, and maximum population density. Most enrichments were able to recover Salmonella Typhimurium to greater than 6 log CFU/ml. AD, MP, and OB had significantly (P &lt; 0.05) higher maximum growth rate (0.9 to 1.0/h) and lower doubling time (0.7 to 0.8 h). Buffered peptone water, AD, MP, and OB recovered healthy and 50%-injured cells at low inoculum levels to more than 6.0 log CFU/ml; OB achieved the greatest recovery (7.6 and 7.9 log CFU/ml), following 24 h of incubation. The 85%-injured cells at 100 and 101 CFU/25 g, however, were only recovered in OB, reaching 7.3 and 7.5 log CFU/ml, respectively. These results suggest that OB may be an appropriate enrichment broth for the recovery of Salmonella Typhimurium from raw duck wings in standard diagnostic tests or other rapid detection methods, to avoid false-negative results.
