Language history questionnaire (LHQ 2.0): A new dynamic web-based research tool

The language history questionnaire (LHQ) is an important tool for assessing the linguistic background of bilinguals or second language learners and for generating self-reported proficiency in multiple languages. Previously we developed a generic LHQ based on the most commonly asked questions in published studies (Li, Sepanski & Zhao, 2006). Here we report a new web-based interface (LHQ 2.0) that has more flexibility in functionality, more accuracy in data recording, and more privacy for users and data. LHQ 2.0 achieves flexibility, accuracy, and privacy by using dynamic web-design features for enhanced data collection. It allows investigators to dynamically construct individualized LHQs on the fly and allows participants to complete the LHQ online in multiple languages. Investigators can download and delete the LHQ results and update their user and experiment information on the web. Privacy issues are handled through the online assignment of a unique ID number for each study and password-protected access to data.

AbstractThe language history questionnaire (LHQ) is an important tool for assessing the linguistic background and language proficiency of multilinguals or second language learners. Previously we developed a generic LHQ based on the most commonly asked questions in published studies (Li, Sepanski & Zhao, 2006) and provided a web-based interface (LHQ 2.0) that has flexibility in functionality, accuracy in data recording, and privacy for users and data (Li, Zhang, Tsai & Puls, 2014). LHQ3 (version 3) introduces new functions, developed in response to many comments/requests from users. One important improvement is the addition of an automatic scoring system, in that the new interface automatically calculates aggregated scores for language proficiency, language dominance, and language immersion levels. Finally, LHQ3 allows researchers to assign different weights to the modules when calculating the aggregated scores, addressing the issue of different focuses that different researchers put on multilingual speakers’ language usage and background.

The ability to discriminate phonetically similar first language (L1) and second language (L2) sounds has significant consequences for achieving target-like proficiency in second-language learners. This study examines the L2 perception of Spanish approximants [β, δ, ɣ] in comparison with their voiced stop counterparts [b, d, g] by adult English-Spanish bilinguals. Of interest is how perceptual effects are modulated by factors related to language dominance, including proficiency, language history, attitudes, and L1/L2 use, as measured by the Bilingual Language Profile questionnaire. Perception of target phones was assessed in adult native Spanish speakers (n = 10) and Spanish learners (n = 23) of varying proficiency levels, via (vowel-consonant-vowel) VCV sequences featuring both Spanish approximants and voiced stops during an AX discrimination task. Results indicate a significant positive correlation between perceptual accuracy and a language dominance score. Findings further demonstrate a significant hierarchy of increasing perceptual difficulty: β < δ < ɣ. Through an examination of bilingual language dominance, composed of the combined effects of language history, use, proficiency, and attitudes, the present study contributes a more nuanced and complete examination of individual variables that affect L2 perception, reaching beyond proficiency and experience alone.

Since the Web is becoming the main means of disseminating information in private and public organizations, both at internal and external levels, several applications at Internet and intranet level need mechanisms supporting a selective access to data available over the Web. Through XML, the document exchange and acquisition processes, which can be very frequent in Web-based systems, are simplified and standardized. The development of suitable security policies for both access control and information release and distribution are relevant research topics in the security field, and XML compatibility is an important requirement for Web datasource protection. This chapter covers the issues related to the definition of security policies, models and mechanisms for access control and dissemination of Web data, and is organized in two parts. In the first part, we introduce the general issues and requirements related to the definition of different types of security policies for access control and for information release in Web datasources. Then, we present security policies and mechanisms specifically devoted to the protection of XML data. In the second part, we describe the use of XML for the specification of security relevant information, focusing on security policies, subject credentials, and content protection.

AbstractCollocations are of great importance for second language learners, and a learner’s knowledge of them plays a key role in producing language fluently (Nation, 2001: 323). In this article we describe and evaluate an innovative system that uses a Web-derived corpus and digital library software to produce a vast concordance and present it in a way that helps students use collocations more effectively in their writing. Instead of live search we use an off-line corpus of short sequences of words, along with their frequencies. They are preprocessed, filtered, and organized into a searchable digital library collection containing 380 million five-word sequences drawn from a vocabulary of 145,000 words. Although the phrases are short, learners can browse more extended contexts because the system automatically locates sample sentences that contain them, either on the Web or in the British National Corpus. Two evaluations were conducted: an expert user tested the system to see if it could generate suitable alternatives for given text fragments, and students used it for a particular exercise. Both suggest that, even within the constraints of a limited study, the system could and did help students improve their writing.

English and Malay languages are categorized as popular languages in the world.  However, both languages underwent different history and composition. This study investigates the languages in terms of history, phonology, loanwords, grammar, morphology and semantics. The purposes of studying the comparisons and contrasts of both languages are not only to analyze the uniqueness of the languages but also to identify the process of understanding the languages especially the view of second language learners. It is found that two languages come from different background; somehow they share similar characteristics such as the vowels sounds, loanwords and semantics. However, the learners face difficulty in learning both languages especially in pronunciations and spelling.Keywords: English language, Malay language, history of language

A web-based platform where people can easily rent fashion things will be a great exposure. Useful for people who are not able to own expensive products for various reasons. The system is designed in a way that takes care of the user by providing accurate information about the product. We aim to create an application that will provide a one stop solution for all fashion related problems.

The overall aim of this study is to determine the performance of selected web-based dynamic middleware systems that are used for designing and implementing dynamic web application systems. This is necessary in a world where more applications are moving to the web, and slow performance of such applications can discourage users, thereby reducing profit, and reduce programmers’ productivity and quality of applications due to slow testing and execution. Java Servlets, Java Server Pages (JSP), Microsoft Active Server Pages (ASP), and Personal Home Page (PHP) were used to perform some operations on the server, like retrieving all records from a database stored on the server. The time taken since the query is initiated from the browser, to the time the query result is displayed on the client browser were measured for each of the four middleware systems as an estimate for their performance. Records were increased in multiples of thousands to estimate scalability along with the performance. PHP proved to be more efficient and more scalable.
