The effects of sequence of feed allocation within the day on the growth and carcass characteristics of lambs fed barley based diets

Feeding lambs diets formulated to be synchronous for their hourly release of energy and nitrogen (N) in the rumen has been shown to increase growth rate and feed conversion efficiency (Witt et al. 1997). However the diets used contained different feed ingredients and therefore the differences in performance may have been due to some aspect of the diet that was not characterised. The objectives of the current experiment were to supply the same quantity of feed ingredients over a 24h period but alter the sequence of allocation within the day to achieve different patterns of energy and N release in the rumen and investigate the effects on growth and metabolism of ram lambs when fed at a restricted level.

Weight gain, shoulder height and feed intake responses to immunization against somatostatin (SRIF) were examined in three experiments with a total of 78 lambs. Initial immunizations against SRIF occurred when lambs were 4, 8 and 3 wk old for exps. 1, 2 and 3, respectively, with booster immunizations 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 wk later. Control lambs were left untreated except in exp. 3 where one group of control lambs was immunized with human serum alpha globulin. Treated lambs were immunized with SRIF conjugated to human serum alpha globulin. Experiments were terminated when lambs reached 45 kg body weight. SRIF immunization did not alter lamb shoulder height or feed conversion efficiency. Rate of gain of ram and wether lambs, but not ewe lambs, was improved by SRIF immunization. Wether lambs in exp. 1 and ram lambs in exp. 2 gained 21 and 15% more, respectively, than their controls by 20 wk of age. In exp. 3, SRIF-treated 3/4 Romanov ram lambs gained 13% more than their controls by 19 wk of age. However, SRIF-treated 7/8 Romanov lambs gained only 3% more than controls during this time. In conclusion, immunizing wether and ram crossbred lambs against somatostatin increased their growth rates sufficiently to reduce the time needed to reach market weight by 2–3 wk. However, feed conversion efficiency was not improved by somatostatin immunization. Key words: Somatostatin, SRIF, immunization, growth rate, lambs

The efficacy of diatomaceous earth (DE) on growth rate, egg production and on increasing feed conversion efficiency in deep litter raised layer hens was evaluated. The study was conducted at Mukono Zonal Agricultural Research and Development Institute (MUZARDI) in Uganda. Worms were collected from fresh intestines of indigenous chicken obtained from Kalerwe chicken market near Kampala. The DE was mined in Pakwach (formerly Nebbi) district in Northern Uganda. Chickens of the Lohmann Brown breed raised on deep litter were studied. At 7 weeks the birds were divided into 5 treatment groups, A, B, C, D and E each composed of 40 birds. Groups C, D and E were given an oral dose containing 250 embryonated eggs of A. galli while groups A and B were not infected. The chicks were weighed; and subjected to feeding trials as arranged below: A – Non-infected birds on DE (4%) supplemented diet; B –non-infected birds on neither piperazine (a conventional de-wormer) nor DE; C – infected birds on DE supplemented diet; D – infected birds on piperazine; and group E – infected birds on neither DE nor piperazine applied. Fecal samples were collected and analysed in the laboratory biweekly at week 16 till week 22 respectively for fecal egg counts. In a subsequent experiment, day-old layer chicks from Lohmann Brown strain but different from those used in earlier experiments, were used to assess the effect of DE on egg production. At 17 weeks of age the 420 were divided as follows: 6 treatment groups each having 7 replicates and each replicate having 10 birds. This study showed that DE can be used successfully in growing pullet diets to correct nutritional mineral imbalance since it supplies more than 14 trace elements and other elements. Diatomaceous earth also enables pullets to cope with Ascaridia galli load; and 2% DE supplementation did not have significant improvement on egg production as compared to no supplementation at all. However, reduction in egg production was experienced when supplementation with levels of DE higher that 2% was applied. Results from biweekly fecal analyses showed significant differences in fecal egg counts (p<0.05); and treatment by group (p<0.05).

SUMMARYOne hundred and forty-two kids of the Damascus breed of goat were used over a 10½-mo period to study the effects of early castration (at 7 days of age) on growth, feed conversion efficiency and carcass quality and late castration (at 7½ mo of age) on the presence or absence of taint in goat meat.Intact male kids grew faster and used feed more efficiently than castrates until they were about 9 mo old (56 kg live weight). There- after intact kids exhibited strong sexual activity and as a result their growth ceased completely whereas castrates continued growing. Early castrates produced fatter carcasses than those of intact kids. Castration of male kids at the age of about 7½ mo (44 kg live weight) was not successful in this trial and the kids performed very poorly. A taint of varying intensity was present in the meat of intact goats but not in that from any of the early or late castrates.

Two experiments were conducted, using a total of 288 crossbred boars, gilts and barrows from the progeny of two Yorkshire sow lines, one kept as control, and the other selected for lower backfat thickness and increased growth rate for six generations. The lysine to DE (g MJ−1) levels used during grower (20 to 60 kg) and finisher (60 to 105 kg) periods, respectively, in the three diets (14.2 MJ DE kg−1) were: 1) 0.53 and 0.42 with no other supplemental amino acids except lysine, 2) 0.69 and 0.57 with supplemental threonine and methionine at a ratio of 0.65 and 0.30 to dietary lysine and 3) 0.85 and 0.72 with supplemental threonine and methionine at similar ratios as in diet 2. Feeding diets 2 and 3 increased (P < 0.05) the ADG and feed conversion efficiency of all pigs in both experiments, and this response was mainly during the grower period. Feeding diet 3 improved the growth rate more than diet 2 only in boars and gilts but not barrows. It also increased the feed conversion efficiency in exp. 2. The increased feed conversion efficiency response was higher in select than control line pigs, and in boars. Feeding diets 2 and 3 also improved the carcass merit but reduced the meat quality with an increased firmness and reduced marbling, juiciness, and flavour. The overall results indicated that an average daily intake of approximately 17 g of lysine (0.74 g MJ−1 DE), 11 g of threonine and 5 g of methionine during the grower period and 25 g lysine (0.62 g MJ−1 DE), 18 g threonine and 8 g methionine during finisher period optimized the growth performance, lean growth rate and carcass merit. This response tended to be higher in select than control line, and in boars and gilts than barrows. Key words: Lysine, amino acids, energy, growth, carcass, pigs

Abstract. The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of dietary vitamin E supplementation on performance, slaughter-carcass characteristics and meat quality traits of Karya male lambs. Lambs weaned approximately at 10 weeks of age were divided into two groups. After the 10 days adaptation period, control group (CG, n7) and vitamin E group (VEG, n=6) lambs were fed on with concentrates ad libitum and 100 g hay/lamb/day for 70 days. In addition the VEG received a supplement on concentrates of 45 mg/lamb/day vitamin E during the fattening period. The meat quality traits were determined using m. longissimus dorsi (LD) obtained from split between 12th and 13th ribs on both groups lambs. Daily gain and feed conversion efficiency were 259 g and 5.3 for CG and 266 g and 4.7 for VEG, respectively. There was no vitamin E supplementation effect on the average daily weight gain and feed conversion efficiency (P>0.05). However, VEG had 10.5 % higher feed conversion efficiency than control lambs. Slaughter and carcass characteristics of lambs were not significantly affected from vitamin E supplementation (P>0.05). There were no effects of vitamin E supplementation on lightness (L*), redness (a*), yellowness (b*) and pH during 12-day aerobic storage. Thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) values at day 2 were not affected by the vitamin E treatment. However, TBARS values on day 4 and 8 (P<0.05), and day 12 (P<0.01) were higher in the CG than in the VEG. Although not significant, 10 % higher feed conversion efficiency in VEG animals might suggest that vitamin E supplementation is useful to improve fattening performance.

1. Four treatments were employed in the rearing of colostrum-deprived piglets from birth to 14 days of age. The performance of the artificially reared piglets was compared with that of conventionally raised sow-suckled piglets.2. Statistically significant differences in growth rate were found in favour of piglets receiving 22% cows' milk solids from birth when compared with the sow-suckled group and the other artificial treatments.3. Small non-significant differences in feed conversion efficiency were found between the artificial treatments with one exception. Pigs receiving 22% cows' milk solids from birth possessed superior conversion figures when compared with pigs receiving 6% cows' milk solids after birth.4. Each of the artificial treatments led to fewer deaths than the sow-suckled group.5. Pigs on the artificial treatments did not undergo such rapid changes of serum protein profile as did the sow-suckled piglets. Serum protein values for the pigs on the artificial treatments rose from approximately 33% of the levels in the sow-suckled group at two days of age to approximately 60% at 14 days of age.

The objective of this work was to verify the occurrence of compensatory growth in Malaysian prawn (Macrobrachium rosenbergii) reared in pens, after being stocked in cages under high densities during nursery phase. The experiment was carried out in 0.5 m² cages and 2-m² pens set in natural bottom pond with 2,400 m². Prawn post-larvae (PL) with an average weight of 0.026 ± 0.012 g (nursery phase) were initially stocked in 16 cages at the densities of 50, 400, 800 and 1,200 PL m-2. Sixty days later, prawns were transferred to 16 growing pens, at the density of 12 prawns m-2. Initial average weight of the prawn in this phase was the final average weight registered in the nursery phase, as follows: 50 PL m-2 = 2.3 ± 0.3 g; 400 PL m-2 = 0.5 ± 0.03 g; 800 PL m-2 = 0.3 ± 0.05 g and 1,200 PL m-2 = 0.1 ± 0.01 g. Commercial rations for prawns (35% crude protein) were given once a day, in the afternoon. After 244 days, survival, average weight and biomass did not differ significantly among prawns with different initial average weight. Relative growth rate was significantly greater in prawns previously stocked at 1,200 PL m-2 and feed conversion efficiency was significantly better for those previously stocked at 400 and 1,200 PL m-2. These results suggest the existence of partial compensatory growth in M. rosenbergii, what can successfully carry on stocking of prawns of this species at high densities in the nursery phase.
