The First Year Egg Production of Barred Plymouth Rocks by V. S. Asmundson, University of British Columbia, Vancouver. Scientific Agriculture, Vol. IX., No. 2, 1928.In this study of 569 records of first year production it was found that average production had increased by nearly twenty eggs or from 187 eggs in 1920–21 to 206 in 1925–26. The mean annual egg production of the 569 birds was 198 eggs which was practically identical with the average for Barred Rock pullets entered in the British Columbia contests.

Teaching evaluations have become part of life on Canadian campuses; however, there is no agreement among researchers as to their validity. In this article, comparisons were made between first- and third-year collective evaluations of professors’ performance at the University of British Columbia, York University, and McGill University. Overall, it was found that students who provided low evaluations in their first year were also likely to do so in their third year. This effect held independent of degree of campus engagement, sex, student status (domestic or international), and generational status (students who were the first in their families to attend university, compared to those who were not). Given that over the course of their studies, students likely would have been exposed to a range of different behaviours on the part of their professors, it is argued that the propensity of a large number of students to give consistently low evaluations was a form of “habitual behaviour.”

At the University of British Columbia Okanagan School of Engineering (SOE), first year engineering students take a 3-credit course in Engineering Communication. Designed to replace the traditional 3-credits of English taken by other first year students, APSC 176 introduces students to the fundamentals of engineering communication, with a strong emphasis on written communication. The paper is describes the types of assignments given to first year students, the techniques used to encourage meaningful revision of written assignments, and the methods used to evaluate written assignments. Particular attention will be paid to a two-week first term design project (such as the assignment, supplemental materials including exercises, and marking guidelines). It should be noted that the design is entirely conceptual - students are not required to develop a prototype, but rather to work with a team to develop (and subsequently, explain and market) a concept in response to an RFP.

The scientific, social, and economic advantages that accrue from Open Science (OS) practices—ways of doing research that emphasize reproducibility, transparency, and accessibility at all stages of the research cycle—are now widely recognized in nations around the world and by international bodies such as the United Nations and the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development. However, program wide or coordinated instruction of undergraduate students in OS practices remains uncommon. At the University of British Columbia in Canada, we have started to develop a comprehensive undergraduate OS program that can be adapted to and woven into diverse subject curricula. We report on the context and planning of the pilot module of the program, “Open Science 101”, its implementation in first-year Biology in Fall 2019, and qualitative results of an attitudinal survey of students following their course.

This paper describes the effects of wildfire on the nesting behaviour of some species of birds in a heathland community at Gooseberry Hill, Western Australia. The most severe fire during the nine year (1981-89) study was a hot summer burn in January 1985, which destroyed 95% of the study area. In the spring following that fire, 81% of the species previously known to breed in the area were still able to nest. The nesting substrate, height, site and aspect for three of the most abundant species (splendid fairy-wrens, western thornbills and yellow-rumped thornbills) were examined in detail. In the immediate post-fire year, all three used as nest sites only those plant species which regenerate by sprouting. The mean height of splendid fairy-wren nests in shrubs was lower than in unburnt habitat, although the wrens also built some nests in unusually high sites in trees in the first two seasons after fire. The mean height of western thornbill nests did not change but nest placement in a favoured substrate, Xanthorrhoea preissii, varied according to time since fire. Yellow-rumped thornbill nests built in burnt habitat tended to be higher and in a more restricted range of substrates than previously. Breeding of splendid fairy-wrens was delayed by three to five weeks in the first year after fire and the number of nests built per group had almost doubled by the second season. Only 59% of adult female western thornbills attempted to nest in the season immediately following the 1985 fire and the onset of breeding in burnt habitat was up to five weeks later than in unburnt. The delay by splendid fairy-wrens and western thornbills was attributed to a shortage of nesting material and adequate food for egg production, respectively, whereas the increase in the number of nests built by splendid fairy-wrens was attributed to a high rate of nest failure. At least two species (white-browed scrubwren and white-cheeked honeyeater) did not nest for two years after the 1985 fire and Acanthiza apicalis has not nested up to the present time (five years). The fire-modified habitat appeared beneficial to little button-quail and elegant parrot, which nested on the study area only after fire. White-winged triller and dusky woodswallow were more numerous breeders after fire than previously. Our findings highlight the importance of detailed long-term studies for estimating adequate fire-free intervals necessary for the conservation of resident avian species. A minimum period of at least 10 years is suggested for heathlands of south-western Australia.

By persistent gill-netting in Cultus lake, British Columbia, the predaceous fish which feed on young sockeye (Oncorhynchus nerka) have been considerably, though unevenly, reduced in numbers. The populations of squawfish and char, of lengths greater than 200 millimetres, were reduced in three years to about 1/10 of their original numbers. The abundance of trout and coho salmon have been much less affected by netting, if at all, though a considerable number have been killed. From the first year of control operations the survival rate of young sockeye salmon was considerably increased. In the three years which have been tested, the mean survival rate has been increased three and a third times over average conditions prior to control. In absolute figures, this represents 3,800,000 migrants saved, which are expected to yield 380,000 adult sockeye. Even disregarding the important cumulative future increase, the immediate return from the work is a quantity of sockeye whose value is many times greater than the cost of control work.

First-year students in an English course at the University of British Columbia were asked to define 53 non-technical words from Munn's introductory psychology text. In spite of generous scoring standards performance, over-all, was alarmingly poor. Half of the students could correctly identify no more than 29 of the 53 words, and such common words as “incidental” and “spontaneously” were missed by over 50% of our 57 subjects. Results are comparable to Hoffman's findings which were reported in this Journal 18 years ago.
