AbstractRecent statistics report that more than 3.7 million new cases of cancer occur in Europe yearly, and the disease accounts for approximately 20% of all deaths. High-throughput screening of cancer cell cultures has dominated the search for novel, effective anticancer therapies in the past decades. Recently, functional assays with patient-derived ex vivo 3D cell culture have gained importance for drug discovery and precision medicine. We recently evaluated the major advancements and needs for the 3D cell culture screening, and concluded that strictly standardized and robust sample preparation is the most desired development. Here we propose an artificial intelligence-guided low-cost 3D cell culture delivery system. It consists of a light microscope, a micromanipulator, a syringe pump, and a controller computer. The system performs morphology-based feature analysis on spheroids and can select uniform sized or shaped spheroids to transfer them between various sample holders. It can select the samples from standard sample holders, including Petri dishes and microwell plates, and then transfer them to a variety of holders up to 384 well plates. The device performs reliable semi- and fully automated spheroid transfer. This results in highly controlled experimental conditions and eliminates non-trivial side effects of sample variability that is a key aspect towards next-generation precision medicine.

AbstractWe propose a design for a simple paste extruder modification that can be used for the selective deposition and patterning of gels and pastes, using a desktop 3D printer as the primary platform. This technology has found use with a variety of materials in seemingly disparate fields, including the printing of ceramics, food and biological materials, each with a variety of material-specific solutions to enhance printability. However, we focus on a syringe-pump driven system that is simple, low-cost, modular, easily assembled and highly modifiable with a low barrier of entry in order to maximise the generalisability and range of printable materials.

This research examines the development of a low cost mobile electrospinning system for fabricating nanofiber. The electrospinning system developed in this study consists of a horizontal needle arrangement and a motor which supports the working system that controls the solution flow rate without an external syringe pump. In order to discover the equipment operating conditions for nanofiber fabrication, the distance from the needle to the target was studied. A PVA solution of 8wt% was used and voltage was applied at 13 kV. The needle to target distances were varied from 8-18 cm. At a distance of 10 cm, the SEM images showed that the smallest diameter of the fiber was 119 nm. The average diameter was in the range of 119-240 nm. Concentrations of the 3 different solutions of PVA, PEO and PCL with the variation of voltage at each concentration were studied. The results show the diameter of PVA at 8 wt% and 12%wt are in the range of 127-197 nm and 222-402 nm, respectively. The diameter of PCL solution at a 20 wt% concentration is in the range of 32-60 nm. PEO at 2 wt% and 4wt% was not able to form as a fiber.

An infusion pump is a medical device that delivers fluids such as nutrients into a patient’s body in controlled amount. They are widely used in clinical settings such as hospitals, nursing homes etc. There are many types of infusion pumps including large volume, patient-controlled analgesia and insulin pumps. Some are designed mainly for stationary use at a patient’s bedside, because infusion pumps are frequently used to administer critical fluids, including high-risk medications, pump failures and can have significant implications for patient’s safety. From 2005 to 2009, FDA received approximately 56,000 reports of adverse events associated with the use of infusion pumps, including numerous injuries and deaths. Some of the problems include software problems, alarm errors, inadequate design, broken components, battery failures, spark, and shock. In order to overcome these problems, our team came up with an idea to rectify. Our project is very compact in size when compared to the ordinary syringe pump. It can be lifted with single hand since it is weightless and the components used in our project are reliable, cost efficient and user friendly.

Micro/nanopatterns with micro deposition techniques have been used in various applications such as flexible electronic devices, biosensing, and biological tissue engineering. For depositing a small size of droplets that can be controlled, structured and patterned precisely is a very important process for microfabrication. In this study, we developed a low cost and simple system for fabricating micro/nanostructure by a selective micro deposition process using a syringe pump. This method is an additive fabrication method where selective droplet materials are released through a needle of the syringe pump. By translating the rotating stepper motor into a linear movement of the lead screw, it will press the plunger of the syringe and give a force to the fluid inside the syringe, hence a droplet can be injected out. The syringe pump system consists of a syringe, the mechanical unit, and the controller unit. A stepper motor, the lead screw, and the mechanical components are used for the mechanical unit. Arduino Uno microcontroller is used as the controller unit and can be programmed by the computer through GUI (Graphical User Interface). The input parameters, such as the push or pull of flow direction, flow rate, the droplet volume, and syringe size dimension can be inputted by the user as their desired value via keypad or the computer. The measurement results show that the syringe pump has characteristics: the maximum average error value of the measured volume is 2.5% and the maximum average error value of the measured flow rate is 14%. The benefits of a syringe pump for micro deposition can overcome photolithography weaknesses, which require an etching and stencil process in the manufacture of semiconductors. Combining two or more syringes into one system with different droplet materials can be used as a promising method for 3D microfabrication in the future.

AbstractSyringe pumps are powerful tools able to automate routine laboratory practices that otherwise consume large amounts of manual labor time. Commercially available syringe pumps are expensive, difficult to customize, and often preset for a narrow range of operations. Here, we show how to build a programmable dual syringe pump (PDSP) that overcomes these limitations. The PDSP is driven by a Raspberry Pi paired with a stepper motor controller to allow maximal customization via Python scripting. The entire setup can be controlled by a touchscreen for use without a keyboard or mouse. Furthermore, the PDSP is structured around 3D printed parts, enabling users to change any component for their specific application. We demonstrate one application of the PDSP by using it to generate whole cell lysates using a cell homogenizer in an automated fashion.Specifications table
