AbstractNanocomposite films of polymethylmethacrylate PMMA with Sn0.75Fe0.25S2 nanoparticles (NPs) were fabricated by both thermolysis and casting techniques. Changes in PMMA/Sn0.75Fe0.25S2 nanocomposite (NCP) due to gamma irradiation have been measured. XRD results indicate that the gamma doses of 10–80 kGy cause intermolecular crosslinking that reduces the ordered portion in the NPs. Bonding between the NPs and the host PMMA was confirmed by FTIR. TGA results indicate an enhancement in thermal stability in the NCP films irradiated with doses 20–80 kGy. The optical band gap was reduced from 3.23 to 2.47 eV upon gamma irradiation up to 80 kGy due bonding between the NPs and PMMA which enhanced the amorphous part of the NPs. Finally, the color variation between the blank and irradiated films (ΔE) was determined. Color changes immensely when the PMMA/Sn0.75Fe0.25S2 NCP films are gamma irradiated. Values of ΔE were as much as 31.6 which is an acceptable match in commercial reproduction on printing presses.

AbstractA series of guanidinium chloride derivatives have been synthesized by condensation of 1,3-diaminoguanidine monohydrochloride with heteroaromatic formaldehydes in good yields. All compounds were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonances and infrared spectroscopies, and the molecular structures of four compounds were determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The optical properties of these guanidinium chloride derivatives with fluoride anions were investigated, showing selective color changes from colorless to yellow or orange, red-shifted in the ultraviolet/visible absorption spectra.

The optical properties of metallic nanoparticles are highly sensitive to interparticle distance, giving rise to dramatic but frequently irreversible color changes. By electrochemical modification of individual nanoparticles and nanoparticle pairs, we induced equally dramatic, yet reversible, changes in their optical properties. We achieved plasmon tuning by oxidation-reduction chemistry of Ag-AgCl shells on the surfaces of both individual and strongly coupled Au nanoparticle pairs, resulting in extreme but reversible changes in scattering line shape. We demonstrated reversible formation of the charge transfer plasmon mode by switching between capacitive and conductive electronic coupling mechanisms. Dynamic single-particle spectroelectrochemistry also gave an insight into the reaction kinetics and evolution of the charge transfer plasmon mode in an electrochemically tunable structure. Our study represents a highly useful approach to the precise tuning of the morphology of narrow interparticle gaps and will be of value for controlling and activating a range of properties such as extreme plasmon modulation, nanoscopic plasmon switching, and subnanometer tunable gap applications.

The four-layer structure angle-dependent pigments with compositions of Mica/TiO2 /Al2O3/Fe2O3, Mica/TiO2/Al2O3/Cr2O3 and Mica/TiO2/Al2O3/Co2O3 were firstly prepared by the wet-chemical coating method, respectively. The as-prepared pigments were performed by precipitating different metal ions, such as Cr3+, Fe3+, Co2+and Al3+, on the pretreated substrates, mica titanium. The optical effects of four-layer structure pigments were investigated in detail by using the five angles’ spectrophotometer. The angle-dependent spectral reflectance and color changes can be quantitatively measured, and the results show that the angle-dependent effects for the as-prepared pigment were improved by the increasing coated Al2O3 layers.

An optical properties of the flexographic prints on the shrink sleeve has been experimentally investigated. Two main materials of shrink sleeve: PVC and PET were used for the research. Films were printed using UV flexographic inks. The color changes arised during shrinking of the films were analysed. Investigations were done using CMYK and PANTONE color matching systems. Color characteristics CIE L*a*b* and color difference DE at different shrink level of the film was estimated. It was found that colors become darker during the shrinking of the film. In the case of rasterize image it is related to the deformation of the raster dots, decrease of the spaces between the raster dots and other factors. The biggest changes in the CMYK color system was determined in the Yellow color, while in the tested PANTONE color system – in the blue (P 290) color. The smallest changes in the CMYK color system was determined in the Cyan color, while in the PANTONE color system – in the white color.

Abstract This study evaluated the effect of post-cure heat treatment (PCHT) on the Knoop microhardness (KHN), degree of conversion (DC), color changes, and contrast ratio (CR) of four resin composites (RCs): Z100 (3M ESPE), Z350 XT (3M ESPE), Estelite Omega (Tokuyama) and Empress Direct (Ivoclar Vivadent). Specimens (12 × 1 mm) were prepared for each material (n = 10 / group). After curing, samples were subjected to PCHT for 10 min at 100°C or 170°C. Control group was maintained at room temperature (24°C) for the same time. The DC was analyzed by FT-NIR immediately and 24 h after the PCHT (n = 3 / group). KHN was analyzed 24 h after PCHT (n = 10 / group). According to CIEDE2000 (∆E00), color measurements were obtained immediately after curing, five minutes after PCHT, and after seven days of storage in water, coffee, and red wine. Data were analyzed by One and Two-Way ANOVA (p < 0.05). Z100, Z350, and Estelite Omega showed increases in KHN with increased temperature (p < 0.05). PCHT at 100°C and 170°C led to a higher DC of all RCs (p < 0.05). Initially, the PCHT lead to increased ∆E00 values (p < 0.05), which was decreased after immersion in coffee and wine (p < 0.05). Considering the effect of PCHT and staining solutions, lower color changes were observed in the thermally treated specimens (p < 0.05). Taken collectively, the results suggest the PCHT as an economical and practical alternative to enhance direct RC's properties in direct-indirect and indirect restorations.

The aim of this study consists of monitoring the effect of thermal aging on the physico-chemical and optical properties of poly(ester urethane) elastomers designed as damping materials for railways. The materials were obtained by polyaddition in two stages in melt, resulting in regular structures. The structural modifications during the thermal aging of the samples were monitored using FTIR, color changes, TGA in non-isothermal and isothermal conditions, DSC and physico-mechanical measurements. The structural regularity of the rigid and flexible segments maintained the good mechanical properties of the structures up to 200 h of thermal aging at the elevated temperatures of 40 °C, 70 °C, 100 °C and 130 °C. It was observed that at 40 °C and low exposure times, changes occur mainly to the carbonyl groups of the soft segments. At higher temperatures and longer exposure times urethane groups were affected. Extended thermal aging led to significant changes in thermo-mechanical and optical properties.
