Background: Since the development of Centers for Disease Control’s (CDC) guidelines for the management of suicide clusters, the use of electronic communication technologies has increased dramatically. Aims: To describe an adolescent suicide cluster that drew our attention to the possible role of online social networking and SMS text messaging as sources of contagion after a suicide and obstacles to recognition of a potential cluster. Methods: A public health approach involving a multidisciplinary community response was used to investigate a group of suicides of New Zealand adolescents thought to be a cluster. Difficulties in identifying and managing contagion posed by use of electronic communications were assessed. Results: The probability of observing a time-space cluster such as this by chance alone was p = .009. The cases did not belong to a single school, rather several were linked by social networking sites, including sites created in memory of earlier suicide cases, as well as mobile telephones. These facilitated the rapid spread of information and rumor about the deaths throughout the community. They made the recognition and management of a possible cluster more difficult. Conclusions: Relevant community agencies should proactively develop a strategy to enable the identification and management of suicide contagion. Guidelines to assist communities in managing clusters should be updated to reflect the widespread use of communication technologies in modern society.

This chapter examines how features of electronic communication (text messaging, Facebook, and Twitter) make it an ideal environment for peer influence, and how positive and negative peer reinforcement via electronic communication relates to the development and perpetuation of antisocial behavior. Electronic modes of communication allow youth to be in contact with their peer group instantaneously and continuously. The continuous access provided by electronic forms of communication may intensify the role of positive and negative reinforcement processes. Electronic communication extends youths’ ability to engage in the aversive behaviors that characterize peer coercion. This immediacy also permits less aversive, positive reinforcement processes—such as laughter and encouragement—to continue even when peers are not physically together. The role of text message communication in peer coercion and deviancy training is examined, and illustrative examples are presented. The challenges associated with measuring and observing children’s involvement with an ever-changing virtual landscape are also discussed.

This chapter addresses post-9/11 emergency preparedness, which has been a point of scrutiny regarding the effectiveness and efficiency of response systems, the role of ICT, and how these methods affect first responders and the socially vulnerable, as well as infrastructure concerns stemming from natural and person-caused disasters. The main objective of this chapter is to describe the ongoing solutions that must be incorporated in terms of information and ICT preparation, social media communications, Community Response Grid (CRG), and social networking. The authors propose new programs that must continuously be explored with a variety of partners to assure that programs and policies for the socially marginalized are mitigated. Finally, the authors explore ways to augment the emergency learning curve through using the cooperation of government so funding and policies are in place to prevent infrastructure weakness, pre- and post-disaster, and to protect the lives and well-being of the citizenry.

Electronic communications refer to forms of communication where ideas and information are embedded in spatially mobile electronic signals. These include the internet, telephony, television, and radio. Electronic communications are linked to state power in a complex and, at times, contradictory manner. More specifically, a tension exists between divergent pressures toward constructing electronic communication spaces as spaces of state power, as spaces of escape, and as spaces for contesting state power. On the one hand, states often invest in infrastructure and empower regulatory institutions as they seek to intensify their presence within national territory, for example, or project their influence beyond territorial borders. The widespread use of electronic communication technologies to facilitate governmental power is especially evident in the realm of cyberwarfare. E-government platforms have also been created to foster interaction with the state through electronic means. On the other hand, communication systems thrive through the idealization (and, ideally, the regulatory construction) of a space without borders, whereby individuals might bypass, or even actively work to subvert, state authority. Just as the internet has been seen as a means for state power to monitor the everyday lives and subjectivities of the citizenry, it has also been employed as a tool for democratization. Various institutions have emerged to govern specific electronic communication networks, including those that are focused on reproducing the power of individual states, those that operate in the realm of intergovernmental organizations, those that devolve power to actors in local government, and those that empower corporations or civil society.

The aim of this essay is to show that the expansion of the electronic communication technologies leads to the appearance of new forms of communities the function of which are to foster communities of interest and equality of status all work to enhance social capital, despite their lack of direct physical orientation. Mediated individuals treat these mediated communities as real. That is, the role of communication as value-based in mediated communities works to create traditional forms of communities as well. To understand why these new forms of communities can be regarded as moral entities, we wish to highlight how communal existence affects our moral decisions and judgements in the information age.

Especially since the mid-2000s when cellular communication became more widespread in Kinshasa, Pentecostal leaders and followers increasingly reflect about the proper usage of the handset and insert it into reflections about ‘approved’ (ya malamu) and ‘disapproved’ (ya mabe) types of femininity. Via an examination of the critical role of electronic communication technologies in the construction of ‘Christian femininities’, I bring novel insights on the already much-debated question about Pentecostalism’s contribution to women’s lifeworlds. Amid applause for the liberating workings of Pentecostal-Charismatic rituals and associations, the ways that Pentecostalism installs new boundaries, promotes new preferences and lifestyles, and sanctions those who cannot comply with the new directives are often ignored. This article highlights the ambiguity of Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity by comparing the discourse about two types of femininity that dominate in the churches: ‘bad girls’, of which Blackberry Girls are a subtype, and ‘brides of Jesus’.


Entertainment has gained some new values, and our participation in amusement has become more active along with the developments in social communication technologies. Examples that discuss the meaning of computational solutions for entertainment include intelligent environments, augmented and virtual reality, computer animation, games, live entertainment, and social media. This text examines the enhanced role of the participant’s self-consciousness while engaging in social networking, and the role of the biologically active substances such as oxytocin and dopamine in shaping the ways of entertaining with the use of computing technologies.

Purpose With the rapidly improving communication technologies, a growing number of people communicate with each other in online environments. In particular, social networking services (SNSs) are one of the widely used and common places that enable active communication among users. To understand what drives successful online conversations in SNSs, this study aims to explore the roles of posts and first comments in successful online conversations. Design/methodology/approach To address the purpose, the data of news-related channels in Reddit were collected and analyzed. Findings The study found that successful conversations tend to have the post and first comment with high scores. Also, the first comments in successful online conversations tend to be easier than those in other conversations. Originality/value The results reveal that successful online conversations can be generated not only with empathic posts but also with touching or attractive first comments. In other words, users are likely to participate in an online conversation that starts with an empathic post and first comment. Moreover, both practical and theoretical implications are presented.

Introduction. Ukrainian (Soviet) scientific and technical research was at the forefront of innovation processes in the twentieth century. Scientists paid considerable attention to the development of dual-use military technologies that were implemented in economic activity with a short time lag. One of the largest innovative projects was nationwide communications systems, such as the Internet in the US and the NWAS in the USSR. The advantage of the Soviet communications network was its focus on optimization and automation of economic processes during the pre-project research phase. Most of the scientific and technical developments were conducted in the USSR by Ukrainian scientists under the leadership of V. M. Glushkov. Based on the name of the communication network - «National Automated Information Collection and Processing System for Accounting, Planning and Management of the National Economy» refinement requires the place and role of accounting in the automated processing and transmission of information for management purposes. Purpose. The purpose of the article is to summarize the historical data about NWAS to investigate the experience and prospects of automated processing and transfer of accounting information in global (nationwide) electronic communications. Methods. General scientific empirical, logical and historical methods of knowledge of reality were used in the process of researching the place and role of accounting in the NWAS. The research is based on science general methods of economic processes, facts and phenomena of accounting and business management in the conditions of use of computer and communication technologies. The information base of the research was the historical documents about the NWAS, scientific works of domestic and foreign scientists in the accounting automation field. Results. The place and role of accounting in the nationwide communication network is determined on the basis of research of historical sources and contemporary literature on scientific and practical work of V. M. Glushkov. The methods of accounting functions realization in the NWAS and use of computer and communication technologies are investigated. Scientifically substantiated functional parallels between researches of V. M. Glushkov and modern technologies of processing and transfer of accounting information are provided. It is proved that the most innovative developments in the global dimension regarding the implementation of the principles of economic cybernetics in accounting have been implemented by Ukrainian (Soviet) scientists. Discussion. The implementation areas of V. M. Glushkov’s research in the information society and digital economy have been identified. The reasons for innovative researches stopping on formation of nationwide communication environments are found out. The questions remain: the possibility of information exchange between the Internet and the NWAS, the order of electronic communications of engineers and researchers on scientific and technical cooperation, the possibilities of using the NWAS for Soviet cyber-war (hybrid war), mechanisms of adaptation of the Soviet economy to the decrease in oil prices, realignment with the use of computer and communication technologies.

If we want to convert our rural population into knowledge driven, progressive, self sufficient, self reliant, sustainable society, the role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT’s) cannot be ignored. Timely availability information is considered as most important factor in Indian agriculture. At present ICT is the technology of this millennium. Transferring the developed technology to all end users is time-consuming and tiresome task and is often not completed due to paucity of resources and lack of manpower. In India, agriculture and rural development has gained significantly from ICT due to its widespread extension and adoption. In this era of internet, ICT is committed to provide real, timely accurate authentic information to the farmers and rural peoples.

The article is devoted to the problem of educational communications development as a sphere of implementation of modern information-communication technologies in the higher education system. The purpose of the article is to present the structure and functions of educational communications aimed at the development of personal potential and self-realization of students. Methodology. The study is based on the methodology of personal and communicative-informational approaches in education, psychological-pedagogical provisions on the structure of communication, the leading role of learning activity, didactic principles of building an educational-informational environment. In theoretical terms, the study is based on the idea of the indirect implementation of ICT in education through the development of educational communications. The developing structure of educational communications, including didactic, informational-gnostic, interactive, psychological, attractive-motivational, value-semantic components, is presented. The possibilities of developing personal potential in educational communications are considered. The author’s developmental model of ICT functions is presented, which includes clusters of actual and latent functions aimed at the formation of information-educational space for the development of students’ personal potential. In conclusion, a inference was made about the prospects of the indirect introduction of modern ICT as tools for the development and functioning of various educational communications. At the same time, it is essential that these communications perform psychological and pedagogical tasks and functions.
