(1) Background: During the COVID-19 pandemic, strict lock-down and quarantine were widely imposed by most governments to minimize the spread of the virus. Previous studies have investigated the consequences of the quarantine and social isolation on mental health and the present study examines loneliness and problematic internet use. (2) Methods: The current research used a cross-sectional survey during a lock-down phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. A sample of 593 participants from the Middle East region (Kuwait, Saudi Arabia) were tested using the short form of the Revised UCLA Loneliness Scale and the Internet Addiction Test. (3) Results: Results from regression analyses showed an association between loneliness and Problematic Internet Use (PIU), and an association between loneliness and the number of hours spent online. Younger participants reported greater loneliness. The quality of the relationship with the person(s) with whom they were spending their lock-down was also correlated with loneliness. Those who reported greater loneliness also obtained frequent news about the pandemic from social media. Problematic internet use was associated with loneliness and the predictors of loneliness. ANOVA analyses showed a dose-response between the predictors and PIU. (4) Conclusions: This study highlights the influence of the social characteristics of the local culture during the COVID-19 lock-down on feelings of loneliness and on PIU.

The causal relationships between problematic internet use and psychological distress remain controversial. The present study investigated the reciprocal relationships between problematic internet use (PIU, i.e., problematic social media use [PSMU], problematic gaming [PG]) and psychological distress (i.e., anxiety, depression). Hong Kong and Taiwan university students (N=645; nmale=266; mean=20.95 years [SD=5.63]) were recruited for a survey study, with follow-ups at three, six, and nine months after baseline assessment. The Bergen Social Media Addiction Scale, Internet Gaming Disorder-Short Form, and the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale were used to assess studied variables. Cross-lagged models were constructed to understand the reciprocal relationships between PIU and psychological distress. The level of anxiety significantly impacted the level of PSMU but not in the opposite direction. The level of PSMU significantly impacted the level of depression but not in the opposite direction. In addition, levels of PG and both types of psychological distress had reciprocal impacts on each another. Because PIU can lead to psychological distress, prevention programs on digital health are needed. Moreover, because there is a reciprocity between PG and psychological distress, psychological interventions to break the reciprocal relationship for those with serious PG and psychological distress are warranted.

The popularity of the internet, due to its multifunctional nature, makes most individuals develop an uncontrollable obsessional pattern of usage, signifying negligence in other areas of life. With greater time spent on the internet, these individuals are devoid of quality time spent on real-time socializing, which might cause loneliness. Hence, the present study is aimed at exploring the relationship between loneliness and problematic internet use among young adults. The UCLA three-item questionnaire and Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire short form-6 were administered among students aged between 18-25 years (n=212). A statistically significant relationship was found between loneliness and problematic internet use. Differences in loneliness between various religions were obtained. The analysis revealed a significant relation between alcohol users and high loneliness as well as tobacco users and high problematic internet use. The study tried to understand how the digital age of internet has an impact on the loneliness experienced by young adults.

Internet is a necessary tool of everyday routine, however, concerns about the development of abnormal behaviours in relation to its use by adolescents are constantly growing. The need of brief screening tools for problematic internet use in teenagers in Greece is imperative. The purpose of this study was to validate the 6-item short form of the Problematic Internet Use Questionnaire (PIUQ-SF-6) in a Greek sample of adolescents. The sample consisted of 200 adolescents (55.0% males, 61.6% high school students, 38.4% junior high school students) who completed the study’s questionnaires i.e., a demographic questionnaire, the PIUQ-SF-6, the Young’s Diagnostic Questionnaire (YDQ) and the Adolescent Computer Addiction Test (ACAT).The internal consistency of the Greek version of PIUQ-SF-6 was sufficient and acceptable (Cronbach’s alpha coefficient a = 0.80). Confirmatory Factor Analysis was significant, and goodness-of-fit was adequate. For establishing convergent validity, Pearson’s and Spearman’s correlation coefficients were calculated between the PIUQ-SF-6 and ACAT scales and Receiver Operating Characteristic (ROC) analysis (between PIUQ-SF-6 and YDQ) indicated an excellent accuracy. The Greek version of the PIUQ-SF-6 demonstrated satisfactory psychometric properties (reliability and validity) and is recommended as a reliable screening tool for problematic internet use in Greek adolescents.

Background: The study was a methodological type scale adaptation study in which the validity and reliability of the Turkish version of the Problematic Internet Use Questionairre-Short Form-6 (PIUQ-SF 6) was assessed and the cut-off score was determined. Methods: The study group was consisted of 465 students studying in five different faculties of Eskisehir Osmangazi University. The questionnaire form consists of questions about the sociodemographic characteristics, internet usage characteristics of the individuals and PIUS, PIUQ-SF 6.Results: The mean age of 465 who agreed to participate in the study was 21.1±2.1, with 256 males (55%) and 209 females (45%). In the study group, the instagram usage frequency was 80.4% and the facebook usage frequency was 78.7%. The content validity ındex value of PIUQ-SF 6 was calculated as 0.90. According to the exploratory factor analysis, 3 sub-dimensional structures consisting of 6 items explained 53.42 % of the total change in PIUQ-SF 6 scores and factor loads of the items in 3 sub-dimensions changed between 0.84-0.89. The Cronbach's alpha coefficient value of PIUQ-SF 6 was 0.82 and the test-retest reliability coefficient value was 0.82. There was a strong positive correlation between PIUS and PIUQ-SF 6. Students who spent more than 5 hours on the Internet were found to get high scores from all 3 sub-dimensions of PIUQ-SF 6. Confirmatory factor analysis values of PIUQ-SF 6 were found at acceptable intervals. As a result of K-Means clustering and ROC analysis, the cut-off score of PIUQ-SF 6 was calculated as 13.Conclusions: As a result, it has been concluded that PIUQ-SF 6 is a valid and reliable measurement tool as well as researches to be carried out in larger and different groups would be useful.
