Abstract On mechanically polished cross-sections, getting a surface adequate for high-resolution imaging is sometimes beyond the analyst’s ability, due to material smearing, chipping, polishing media chemical attack, etc.. A method has been developed to enable the focused ion beam (FIB) to re-face the section block and achieve a surface that can be imaged at high resolution in the scanning electron microscope (SEM).

Real-time sensing of Chemical Warfare Agents (CWAs) is today a crucial topic to prevent the lethal effects of a terroristic chemical attack. For this reason, the development of efficient, selective, sensitive and reversible sensoristic devices, able to detect by optical response ppm levels of these compounds, is strongly required. Here, the synthesis of a new fluorescent sensor based on a salen-uranyl scaffold, functionalized with two bodipy moieties, and its application for the detection of sub-ppm levels of CWAs is reported. Detection properties were evaluated by fluorescence measurements and selectivity tests demonstrated the strong affinity for CWAs.

SiC fiber-reinforced SiC ceramic matrix composites (SiCf/SiC CMCs) are being increasingly used in the hot sections of gas turbines because of their light weight and mechanical properties at high temperatures. The objective of this investigation was the development of a thermal/environmental barrier coating (T/EBC) composite coating system consisting of an environmental barrier coating (EBC) to protect the ceramic matrix composites from chemical attack and a thermal barrier coating (TBC) that insulates and reduces the ceramic matrix composites substrate temperature for increased lifetime. In this paper, a plasma spray-physical vapor deposition (PS-PVD) method was used to prepare multilayer Si–HfO2/Yb2Si2O7/Yb2SiO5/Gd2Zr2O7 composite coatings on the surface of SiCf/SiC ceramic matrix composites. The purpose of this study is to develop a coating with resistance to high temperatures and chemical attack. Different process parameters are adopted, and their influence on the microstructure characteristics of the coating is discussed. The water quenching thermal cycle of the coating at high temperatures was tested. The results show that the structure of the thermal/environmental barrier composite coating changes after water quenching because point defects and dislocations appear in the Gd2Zr2O7 and Yb2SiO5 coatings. A phase transition was found to occur in the Yb2SiO5 and Yb2Si2O7 coatings. The failure mechanism of the T/EBC composite coating is mainly spalling when the top layer penetrates cracks and cracking occurs in the interface of the Si–HfO2/Yb2Si2O7 coating.

The situation in Syria has continued to deteriorate. The government has increased its aggression against the people, and outside elements with unclear motives have joined the opposition. On 21 August, the people of Ghuta suffered a chemical attack, and over a thousand died dreadful deaths. Despite his assertion in a cocky interview with Charlie Rose that he has not deployed his chemical arsenal, Bashar Al Assad is now apparently cooperating with the UN investigating team. Meanwhile, artists continue to respond to the violence with images, cartoons and films.

The intensity of the traumatic resin response in white spruce, Piceaglauca (Moench) Voss, to attack by the white pine weevil, Pissodesstrobi Peck, was studied in trees with different severities of attack. The response level was highest in trees where the attacks failed, i.e., where eggs were laid but the brood was killed and no adults emerged. Successfully attacked trees had, on average, only 62% of the response intensity of trees with failed attacks. Response intensity in trees that had been subjected only to feeding was much lower, at 42% of the failed attack response. Healthy unattacked trees showed no or little traumatic resin response. Response intensity varied in a nonlinear fashion with the number of eggs laid, increasing rapidly from zero in healthy trees, being highest in trees having between 10 and 60 egg punctures, and progressively lower again in trees with higher numbers of egg punctures. For a given number of egg punctures, resistant white spruce trees had a consistently higher traumatic resin response than susceptible trees. The number of eggs laid on a leader was inversely related to the intensity of the traumatic resin response and to the timing of the attack. Fewer eggs were laid on leaders with high traumatic resin response or attacked late in the season than on leaders with lower resin response or attacked early in the season.
