SrO–BaO–Nb2O5–B2O3system glass-ceramics with Gd2O3/BaF2addition have been prepared by controlled crystallization method. The effect of Gd2O3/BaF2addition on the phase evolution, dielectric properties and energy storage properties has been investigated. The addition of Gd2O3/BaF2to the glass-ceramics changes the dielectric property and energy storage density. The glass-ceramics with 0.5 mol% Gd2O3and 4.5mol% BaF2heat treated at 850°C/3h possesses a dielectric constant of 125, a breakdown strength of 1055 kV/mm and energy storage density of 6.16J/cm3, which are promising materials for high energy storage density dielectrics.

Surface modification of barium titanate particles has been carried out using a wet chemical method. The microstructural and dielectric properties of the ceramics made from surface modified particles were extensively investigated by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and dielectric properties measurements. The breakdown strength increased by 69% and 117% for the Al 2 O 3 and B 2 O 3– SiO 2 modified ceramics, respectively. An energy storage density of up to 3.2 J/cm3 has been obtained. The suppression of grain boundary electron transport and reduction in pore defects lead to the energy storage properties enhancement of the modified ceramics. These results indicated that surface modification of ceramic particles is a promising approach to obtain dielectric ceramics with high energy storage density.

Lead-free Bi0.5(Na0.80K0.20)0.5TiO3 (BNKT) ferroelectric films were synthesized on Pt/Ti/SiO2/Si substrates via chemical solution deposition. The influence of crystallization time on the microstructures and ferroelectric and energy-storage properties of the films was investigated in detail. The XRD analysis showed that the BNKT films have well crystallized corresponding to the single-phase perovskite structure at 700°C. Ferroelectric and energy-storage properties of the films were significantly enhanced by increasing crystallization time. With crystallization time of 60 min, the remnant polarization (Pr), maximum polarization (Pm), and Pm-Pr values reached the highest values of 7.9 µC/cm2, 28.9 µC/cm2, and 21.0 µC/cm2, respectively, under the electric field of 400 kV/cm. Thanks to the strong enhancement in Pm and the large Pma-Pr value, the highest recoverable energy-storage density (Jreco) gets the value of 2.9 J/cm3. The obtained results indicate that the BNKT films have application potentials in advanced capacitors.

Sr0.5Ba0.5Nb2O6 (SBN) ceramics with the BaO–B2O3–SiO2 (BBS) glasses have been successfully produced for high energy-storage density capacitor applications. The phase evolution, microstructures, dielectric properties and energy storage properties of the SBN-based glass ceramics were investigated. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed all ceramic samples were of tetragonal tungsten bronze-type structures. As the mass ratio of glass in the glass ceramics increased from 0.1wt.% to 10 wt.%, the dielectric constant of the glass ceramics increased initially and then decreased with the increasing glass content. Compared to pure Sr0.5Ba0.5Nb2O6 ceramics, the glass ceramics with a small amount of BBS glass addition illustrated better energy storage properties. The glass-ceramic with 0.5wt. % BBS glass addition showed the highest breakdown strength of 194 kV/cm and a maximum energy storage density of 0.286 J/cm3.
