The release of substantial amounts of toxicologically significant, irritant, and malodourous compounds during the complete combustion of tobacco can generate an unpleasant environment, especially indoors. Herein, we developed non-woven fabric-supported UV- and visible-light-responsive photocatalysts capable of adsorbing and decomposing the odour and tar components of tobacco smoke under irradiation with UV or visible light. The processes of odour component adsorption and subsequent decomposition under irradiation were evaluated in terms of colour changes in the catalytic system and by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. By considering three different photocatalysts, namely TiO2, Fe(III)-grafted TiO2, and Cu(II)-grafted WO3, we assessed the magnitude of odour and tar component adsorption on the fabric fibres, as well as the decomposition of these species after specific visible light or UV irradiation periods. Considering the expansion of our technology for practical applications, the best results among the three tested materials were obtained for non-woven fabric-supported Fe/TiO2. We believe that our technology can be implemented in the design of interior decoration materials for creating a comfortable environment.

Polyvinyl bromide in solution, in dry tetrahydrofuran (THF) yields a black polymer upon exposure to u.v. light of 260 nm or less. This is shown to be the result of ( a ) the elimination of bromine atoms in the primary reaction, and ( b ) the catalysed formation of a conjugated chain by the eliminated bromine atoms. The black polymer is bleached by visible light with the formation of a cross-linked product. This blackening takes place in the full light of the mercury lamp, but by the introduction of a suitable filter passing only visible light, the colour changes can be arrested and ultimately reversed though the viscosity continues to increase due to cross-linking. In dry solutions the liberated bromine is absorbed by the THF solvent and no free Br 2 or HBr is produced. In the presence of water, the products are completely changed. No blackening occurs, free HBr is eliminated, and the colourless PVB becomes cross-linked and ultimately yields a gel. On irradiating the black polymer in aqueous THF by visible light, it becomes bleached, yielding a cross-linked colourless polymer which ultimately gels.

A bisthienylethene-dipyrimido[2,1-b][1,3]benzothiazole (BTE-2PBT) triad has been designed and synthesized based on our recent discovery of PBTs as atypical propeller-shaped novel AIEgens. The triad not only maintains the photochromic properties of BTE moiety in solution, film, and solid state but also exhibits remarkable AIE properties. Moreover, the fluorescence of BTE-2PBT PMMA film could be modulated with high contrast by alternate UV and visible light irradiation. Photoerasing, rewriting, and non-destructive readout of fluorescent images on BTE-2PBT PMMA film well demonstrate its potential application as optical memory media.

The engineering applications of hydrogels are generally limited by the common problem of their softness and brittlness. In this study, a composite double network ionic hydrogel (CDN-gel) was obtained by the facile visible light triggered polymerization of acrylic acid (AA), polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), and hydrolyzed triethoxyvinylsilane (TEVS) and subsequent salt impregnation. The resulting CDN-gels exhibited high toughness, recovery ability, and notch-insensitivity. The tensile strength, fracture elongation, Young’s modulus, and toughness of the CDN-gels reached up to ~21 MPa, ~700%, ~3.5 MPa, and ~48 M/m3, respectively. The residual strain at a strain of 200% was only ~25% after stretch-release of 1000 cycles. These properties will enable greater application of these hydrogel materials, especially for the fatigue resistance of tough hydrogels, as well as broaden their applications in damping.

A novel dithienylethene amide-based photoswitchable anion receptor was synthesised by amidation of 4,4′-(cyclopent-1-ene-1,2-diyl) bis(5-methylthiophene-2-carboxylic acid) with 4-nitroaniline in 56% yield under mild conditions; its structure was confirmed by NMR, MS and elemental analysis. Investigation of its photochromic properties indicated that 4,4′-(cyclopent-1-ene-1,2-diyl)bis[5-methyl-N-(4-nitrophenyl) thiophene-2-carboxamide] had good reversibility and excellent fatigue resistance upon irradiation with UV or visible light and can serve as a colorimetric sensor for fluoride, resulting in a significant change in the absorption spectrum.
