Abstract The heat capacity of lithium tungstate single crystal (Li2WO4) was measured for the first time in the temperature range of 319-997 K. The experiments were carried out by DSC calorimetry. The Li2WO4 single crystal was first grown by low-temperature-gradient Czochralski technique with weight control. The temperature dependence of Li2WO4 heat capacity in the temperature range 319-997 K was monotonic. According to results of our studies, there were no phase transitions in Li2WO4 in the investigated temperature range.

Abstract For the first time, single crystals of undoped lithium tungstate and lithium tungstate doped by 1.25% molybdenum were grown by the low-temperature-gradient Czochralski technique. The standard formation enthalpies, lattices enthalpies, stabilization energies, and the heat capacity were determined in the temperature range of 320-997 K. The lattice enthalpy dependence on Mo content was constructed.

Single crystals of trigonal neodymium scandoborate NdSc3(BO3)4 were grown by the group method from a solution-melt based on bismuth trimolybdate. The molar heat capacity C(T) was studied in the temperature range 2-300 K and magnetic fields up to 9 T. The experimental curve was approximated by the combined Debye-Einstein model. The lattice contribution was determined from ab-initio calculations. Schottky anomaly was observed in the low-temperature region C(T) with the applied magnetic field.

Observations are reported of the ferromagnetic domain structure of natural and synthetic single crystals, made at temperatures close to the low temperature transition with the aid of an acetone based magnetic colloid. The domain structure of the synthetic crystals was found to change radically over a small temperature range centred around –12 °C. These changes are correlated with the measured remanent magnetization. Fairly extensive colloid patterns were found on the natural crystals at low temperatures but when the natural crystals were annealed at 1200 °C this low temperature colloid structure was no longer found.

Single crystals of lithium zinc titanate (Li2ZnTi3O8) were grown in a double-mirror type optical floating-zone furnace for the first time. Single crystals were characterized by X-ray powder diffraction and Laue measurements. The ionic conductivity of the single crystals was measured in the temperature range of 400–700 K. Below 600 K, the ionic conductivity of the single crystal is one to two orders of magnitude higher than that of polycrystalline Li2ZnTi3O8. In the temperature range of 550–600 K, the temperature dependence of the ionic conductivity shows non-Arrhenius behaviour.

High-quality Na2W2O7 single crystals have been grown by low temperature gradient Czochralski technique (LTG Cz). The phase purity of grown crystals has been verified by XRD analysis. A set of oxide compositions based on Na2W2O7 and doped with Ce and special additions for charge compensation has been prepared by solid state synthesis. The formation of Na2W2O7-based solid solutions is found at as high Ce content as ~ 5 mol%.

AbstractWhen a 6H-SiC single crystal is deformed under indentation or uniaxial compression in orientations not favorable for the activation of the 1/3[1120](0001) easy glide system, the secondary slip system is activated. Additionally, for low- temperature deformations, “kinks” and/or micro-cracks form in the crystal. In this paper, experimental results on relatively lowtemperature compression and indentation tests of single crystal 6H-SiC, and the microstructure of the deformed crystals, are presented. Based on the results, the secondary slip system in 6HSiC has been determined to be 1/3[1120](1100), which may actually be a combination of alternate glide of 1/3[1120] dislocations on the (1102) and (1102) planes. Further, dislocation mechanisms for the nucleation of prism-plane and basal-plane cracks, and for the process of kinking, in deformed 6H-SiC are proposed.
