Background: Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) bone cement is the clinical gold standard biomaterial for local antibiotic therapy in osteomyelitis. However, it releases 50% of the antibiotic within first three days. It generates excessive heat during polymerization and is non-biodegradable. It must be removed by another operation. The best-known alternative for PMMA is hydroxyapatite. Objective: The present work is focused to synthesize the biodegradable hydroxyapatite in nano form for slow and sustained release of antibiotics and to study the release kinetics of antibiotics. Method: Nano-hydroxyapatite was synthesized by co-precipitation method and characterized by particle size analyser, transmission emission microscopy, fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and energy dispersive X-Ray analysis. Antibiotic loaded nano-hydroxyapatite was prepared as 7 mm beads. The efficiency of drug loaded nano- hydroxyapatite beads against osteomyelitic isolates were evaluated by well diffusion assay. Zero order, first order, second order, Higuchi model Korsmeyer-Peppas and Gompertz model were fit into the release kinetics of antibiotics from hydroxyapatite. Results: Average size of nano-hydroxyapatite was 5 nm. The bactericidal activity exhibited by antibiotic loaded micro sized hydroxyapatite was therapeutic until 10 days only whereas antibiotic loaded nano-hydroxyapatite was therapeutic until 8 weeks. This confirms the burst release of antibiotics from micro sized hydroxyapatite beads. In contrast, the release was slow and sustained upto 8 weeks from nano-hydroxyapatite. Koresmeyer-Peppas model fits into the release kinetics of antibiotics from nano-hydroxyapatite. Conclusion: Nano-hydroxyapatite with Ca/P ratio of 1.78 is suitable for the slow and sustained delivery of antibiotics for 8 weeks.

Inclusion complex of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) and Plai (Zingiber cassumunar) oil was prepared using a simple co-precipitation method at β-CD to Plai oil in different ratios. The inclusion complexes were characterized using Fourier transform-infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The FT-IR absorption bands of inclusion complex at 3600-3200 cm-1 were broader and shifted toward lower frequencies compared with that of pure β-CD (3359 cm-1). DSC of the inclusion complexes showed two endothermic peaks shifted to lower temperatures (90-100°C and 295-300°C) compared to that of β-CD. The different physicochemical characteristic could be an indication of an embedded guest molecule in the β-CD cavities in the inclusion complex preparation.

Lithium and Mn rich solid solution materials Li [ Li 0.26 Ni 0.07 Co 0.07 Mn 0.56] O 2 were synthesized by a carbonate co-precipitation method and modified with a layer of graphene. The graphene-modified cathodes exhibit improved rate capability and cycling performance as compared to the bare cathodes. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analyses reveal that the improved electrochemical performances are due to acceleration kinetics of lithium-ion diffusion and the charge transfer reaction of the graphene-modified cathodes.

This paper describes the kinetics of catalytic air oxidation of propane. The kinetics data were collected in a plug flow tubular reactor. The experiments were performed over the NiCo2O4 catalyst prepared by co-precipitation method followed by calcination at 400 oC. The kinetic data were collected under the following conditions: 200 mg of catalyst, 2.5 % of propane in air, total flow rate of 60 mL/min, and temperature ranges of 130-170 oC. The data were fitted to the power law rate equation. The activation    energy and frequency factor were found to be 59.3 kJ/g mol and 2.9×108 (mol)0.47.L0.53/g cat.h, respectively. Fischer-Tropsch synthesis (FTS) reaction from syngas was investigated on the Pt-promoted cobalt-based hybrid catalysts prepared by co-precipitation method in a slurry of ZSM-5 (Si/Al=25). The hybrid catalysts were compared with each other for the different content of Pt as a promoter and are characterized using BET, XRD, H2-TPR and NH3-TPD. Their physicochemical properties were correlated with the activity and selectivity of the catalysts. As results, all hybrid catalysts show the C5-C9 yield (%) higher than that of Co-Al2O3/ZSM-5 catalyst. The Pt-promoted hybrid catalysts were found to be more promising towards production of the hydrocarbons of gasoline range and over C10. Copyright © 2017 BCREC Group. Chitosan-hydroxyapatite composite doped with strontium was synthesised via in situ co-precipitation method. Physicochemical properties of the composite obtained were analysed using X-ray diffraction (XRD), infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), field emission scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX) and Thermogravimetry with differential thermal analysis (DT-TGA). The synthesized composite was subjected to bioactivity studies in simulated body fluid (SBF). The calcium release from the sample in SBF was measured using atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The physicochemical properties and bioactivity of the novel composite was compared with that of hydroxyapatite, strontium doped hydroxyapatite and chitosan hydroxyapatite. The in vitro bioactivity studies of the novel composite showed that it has a higher release of Ca2+ in the SBF compared to the other samples. The novel material was also found to induce more Ca2+ deposition after 28 days of immersion in the SBF. Hence, the novel composite material has the potential to be used as biomaterials for clinical application.

The fabrication of Mg-Zn-Al Hydrotalcite (HT) was carried out by the co-precipitation method at various molar ratios. The Mg-Zn-Al HT compound at the optimum molar ratio was then calcined to determine the effect of calcination on the Pb2+ adsorption. The kinetics of the adsorption type was determined by applying pseudo first order and pseudo second order kinetics models. Meanwhile, to investigate the adsorption process, the Freundlich and Langmuir equations were applied to determine the adsorption isotherm. The results showed that the optimum Mg-Zn-Al HT was at a molar ratio of 3 : 1 : 1 with an adsorption efficiency of 73.16 %, while Mg-Zn-Al HT oxide increased the adsorption efficiency to 98.12 %. The optimum condition of Pb2+ removal using Mg-Zn-Al HT oxide was reached at pH 5 and a contact time of 30 minutes. The adsorption kinetics follows the pseudo second order kinetics model with a rate constant of 0.544 g/mg·min. The isotherm adsorption follows the Langmuir isotherm model with a maximum capacity of 3.916 mg/g and adsorption energy of 28.756 kJ/mol.

Cyclodextrin inclusion complexes have been successfully used to encapsulate essential oils, improving their physicochemical properties and pharmacological effects. Besides being well-known for its effects on cats and other felines, catnip (Nepeta cataria) essential oil demonstrates repellency against blood-feeding pests such as mosquitoes. This study evaluates the tick repellency of catnip oil alone and encapsulated in β-cyclodextrin, prepared using the co-precipitation method at a 1:1 molar ratio. The physicochemical properties of this inclusion complex were characterized using GC-FID for encapsulation efficiency and yield and SPME/GC-MS for volatile emission. Qualitative assessment of complex formation was done by UV-Vis, FT-IR, 1H NMR, and SEM analyses. Catnip oil at 5% (v/v) demonstrated significant tick repellency over time, being comparable to DEET as used in commercial products. The prepared [catnip: β-CD] inclusion complex exerted significant tick repellency at lower concentration of the essential oil (equivalent of 1% v/v). The inclusion complex showed that the release of the active ingredient was consistent after 6 h, which could improve the effective repellent duration. These results demonstrated the effective tick repellent activity of catnip essential oil and the successful synthesis of the inclusion complex, suggesting that β-CDs are promising carriers to improve catnip oil properties and to expand its use in repellent formulations for tick management.
