Dichrostachys glomerata (D. glomerata) is an aromatic plant which is used as a spice in cooking and Cameroonian traditional medicine to treat infertility in men. This work was designed to highlight the effects of the ethanolic extract of D. glomerata on oxidative status, serum metabolites and reproductive characteristics in female guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus). A total of 48 primiparous female guinea pigs, aged 4 months old with the body weight of 400 ± 10 g, were divided into four groups with two replications per group (6 guinea pigs each). During 90 days of trial, Group 1 (control group) orally received 1 ml/kg b.w. of distilled water daily, and groups 2, 3, and 4 received D. glomerata ethanolic extract once a day at doses of 50, 100, and 200 mg/kg b.w. using the same method of administration, respectively, for 90 days, including 60 days of gestation. After the first 30 days of treatment, mating was done by placing one non-treated male into cages containing six treated females. At the end of the treatment, data were collected on reproductive characteristics, serum metabolites, and oxidative stress markers. The results revealed that the ethanolic extract of D. glomerata induced a significant decrease in the number of post-implantation resorption and ovaries weight. Groups 3 and 4 showed a significant increase in the number of fetuses per dam and viable fetuses as well as placenta weight, compared to the control group. The serum level of progesterone significantly decreased in the group treated with 200 mg/kg D. Glomerata, compared to the other treated groups. The extract at 100 mg/kg body weight showed a significant increase in fetuses weight and fetuses crown-rump length, compared to the control group. Catalase activity significantly increased in the control group than D. glomerata treated groups. In conclusion, ethanolic extract of D. glomerata minimized reproductive stress and subsequently improved the reproductive performance of guinea pigs.

The endocrine and exocrine activity of guinea pig stomach was measured by the determination of pepsinogen in gastric tissue and in plasma. Gastric juice pepsin was also studied.A significant increase of both pepsinogen and pepsin was found in animals treated with a dose of histamine (75 mg. per kg. of body weight). These results give further evidence that the zymogenic cells of gastric mucosa may be stimulated by histamine. The determination of pepsinogen in gastric tissue seems to permit a direct approach to the enzymatic function of zymogenic cells.

Weight measurement is essential for the management of pediatric patients to calculate the dose of the drugs. But it is not possible to move the child to a weighing scale for determination of body weight when the child is in a critical condition. The purpose of this study was to check if foot length correlates with child’s body weight in our situation and to devise a formula for prediction of weight based on foot– length observed. This Cross-sectional study was carried out in the Department of Pediatrics, Sir Salimullah Medical College, Mitford hospital, Dhaka over a period of 12 months between January 2008 and December 2008. A total of 300 children, between 0 day to five years, meeting the predefined eligibility criteria were included in the study. Using the available data, simple linear regression analysis was performed between the dependent variable weight and independent variable foot length. The estimated linear regression line was: Predicted weight (kg) = a+ [b× foot length]. Data were analyzed using correlation coefficient (r) between foot length and children’s weight. In this study correlation between foot length and weight (r) was 0.92(P<0.001) indicating a perfect linear relationship between them. In the present study determination of correlation (r2) was 0.85 meaning that 85% of the variability in weight might be explained by variation in foot length. The estimated linear regression line was: Predicted weight (kg) = - 4.64 + [1.12 X foot length], where- 4.64 was the intercept and 1.12 was the slope of the regression line. Comparison between measured weight and predicted weight revealed that94% of variation between measured weight and predicted weight was within ±2kg. More than half of the cases (58.3%) the above-mentioned variations were within ±1kg.  This study concluded, there was a strong correlation between foot length and weight in children up to five years. The body weight in children from 0 days up to the age of 5 years can be predicted from foot length. Prediction of weight simply by foot-length measurement could be a great help to the health care provider including doctors and health workers for drug dose calculation in critically ill children. Background: Vitamin C is a vitamin that is water soluble qnd one vitamin that are needed by the body. To meet the intake of vitamin C needed source of vitamin a derived from fruits, one of which is banana. Part of the banana , which is still rarely used is its skin. Banana peel is very beneficial for health however the situation is only considered as waste that has not been utilized well. This study aims to determine the levels of vitamin C on the skin of the banana (Musa paradisiaca) by the method of spectrofotometry uv-visible wavelength 224,5 nm. Method: This research use experimental with purely research stage comprise sample preparation, qualitative test, making the solution of the parent raw, quantitative test, determination of wavelength of maximum vitamin and creation of calibration surve. Result: Based on the research that has been done obtained the result of the qualitative test to prove the presence of high content of vitamin C contained in banana peels, with the highest level obtained in the skin of the plantain by 0,0253 mg/ml and the levels of the lowest on a banana peel the wax by 0,0172 ng/ml. Discussion: Levels of vitamin C on the skin of the banana  barangan of 0, 0219 mg/ml, sample a banana skin banten by 0, 0173 mg/ml, sample a banana peel wax by 0, 0172 mg/ml and sample the skin of plantain by 0, 0253 mg/ml.

The aim of the study was to determine the effect of vitamin C on indicators of gilts and sows reproductive value. The study was conducted using 64 gilts of the Pulawska breed. The experimental gilts received a supplement of vitamin C in an amount of 2.4 g daily throughout the whole experiment. Sixteen gilts from both control and experimental groups were mated in their third estrus. In order to determine the number of corpora lutea and the state of development of the reproductive organs, other gilts from the control and experimental groups were slaughtered after third estrus between the 5th and 10th day of the following estrous cycle. The results showed that gilts from the experimental group were characterized by higher potential fertility, as well as reared more piglets per litter. In the body weight and backfat thickness of sows during the first reproduction cycle in the control and experimental groups were not statistically significantly different. The piglets in the experimental group had higher body weight in the 1st and 21st day of rearing. Larger contents of protein, immunoglobulins, and vitamin C were recorded in the colostrum and milk from experimental sows.

During the preclinical studies of new drugs, the study of the degree of manifestation of their irritant and allergenic effects affects subsequent clinical studies, for example the routes of administration, the need to add excipients to reduce irritation. The article presents the results of studies of the irritant effects and allergenic properties of the Iron in rare unconventional valence – IV. The irritant effect of the Iron(IV) clathrochelate complexes on the skin was studied comprehensively. 20 rabbits were divided into 4 groups (control and three experimental), 5 animals each. The  ointment on the vaseline and aqueous solution of the Iron(IV) clathrochelate complexes was applied to the skin of rabbits of the experimental groups. Also this solution was introduced subcutaneously. The investigated dosage forms were used at a dose of 1 ml/kg body weight (based on the active ingredient 500 mg/kg body weight of the laboratory animal). The results of the studies showed that of the Iron(IV) clathrochelate complexes has no irritant properties when used externally and is characterized by a lack of local reaction by subcutaneous injection. Determination of allergenic properties was performed by detecting itching and swelling in the guinea pigs in animals which were sensitized with this substance. In addition, in order to assess the severity of the inflammatory reaction, the skin temperature was determined before the experiment and on the 20th day of the experiment, and the skin fold thickness was measured using a caliper. The results of the studies showed that there is no allergic action of the Iron(IV) clathrochelate complexes. The results of the ophthalmic test on laboratory animals confirmed the data obtained. Therefore, comprehensive studies of the irritant and allergenic effects of the Iron(IV) clathrochelate complexes were performed for the first time. The Iron(IV) clathrochelate complexes in the form of ointment and solution does not irritate the skin and mucous membranes and has no allergenic properties to the body of the laboratory animals.
