The ongoing management of river valleys has had a negative impact on the effectiveness of flood protection of former floodplains. The risk of flooding and flood damage is constantly increasing. As a result of disorganized industrialization, we are dealing with the accumulation of precipitation which flows much faster from the catchment area to the main river. In turn, due to erosion and the sedimentation processes, the capacity of the main river bed and its tributaries is limited. The solution to the problem may be multidirectional flood control measures, which were designed for the Lubuskie part of the Oder River, from Nowa Sól to Milsko. They concern: the construction of a flood wall in Nowa Sól, the modernization of the flood embankments in the Nowa Sol area and reconstruction of the former floodplain in Milsko. The paper presents the geoengineering conditions of these projects.

Probable Maximum Precipitation is defined as the greatest depth of precipitation which is possible for a given time and duration over a given size storm area under known meteorological conditions. This concept has been used as design criterion of major flood control measures such as spillways of large dams worldwide. It is essential for the generation of Probable Maximum Flood. This paper represents the results of PMP analysis for Bakun Dam Area which has a catchment area of 14,750 km2. Three sets of results were produced, i.e. by statistical method (with frequency factors from World Meteorological Organization manual and National Hydraulic Research Institute of Malaysia in Technical Research Publication No. 1 (TRP 1)) for duration of 1 hour, 8 hours, 24 hours and daily and by experimental method for production of daily PMP. The results were compared with each other and the one made by Sarawak Electricity Supply Corporation on Bakun Dam construction. The set of PMP values results from substitution of Km developed by NAHRIM was concluded to be the most reliable results as daily PMP (276mm) was consistent with the one (280mm) produced by SESCO. However, 6 days PMP value (950mm) done by SESCO was recommended as the Bakun Dam Area cover huge catchment area which higher duration of PMP value should be applied .

Sandbar development would stop the water and sediment exchange between main river and tributary and even influence the normal reservoir opeartion. From the surveyed data of reservoir built many years ago, it shows that when there is a bar in tributary mouth, the tributary volume below the bar will become nullification during the period of flood control or water and sediment regulation of reservoir. There are more tributaries in Xiaolangdi reservoir than the others that it occupies 41.3% of the total initial volume of tributary volume. Obviously, the effective use of tributary volume has been important influenced by comprehensive utilization efficiency of reservoir scheduling, such as flood control, sedimentation reduction and comprehensive utilization. Results of Xiaolangdi Reservoir mobile-bed physical model experiments show that tributary is equivalent to lateral extension of river bed, the tributary intrusion deposition process have strongly relations with the factors, such as original topography, river bed deposition shape and its regime, process with input discharge and input sediment, and method of reservoir regulation. The variation trends of main river and tributary terrain forecasted by model test are basically in accordance with field surveyed data. The results could be used for research, design, and forecasting of reservoirs in sediment-laden river.

Flood proofing first entered the flood damage reduction literature with the pioneering work of John Sheaffer. Prior to this, flood control measures considered were predominantly structural – consisting of dams, levees, dikes, channel improvements, etc. The addition of flood proofing to other flood damage reduction measures has broadened the choice among the existing alternatives for decision makers. Unlike the structural measures, flood proofing measures do not actually reduce flood stage or prevent the water from reaching the structures, but rather are as considered by Sheaffer, “adjustments to structures and contents which are designed and/or adopted primarily to reduce flood damages”.

Haor is basin like structure where water remains either stagnant or in flash flooding condition during the months of June to  November. In Bangladesh, haor areas are covered by Boro rice and produce a large amount. Severe flood damage this boro crop,  so that the study was conducted to know the land use pattern and impact of flood on boro rice production. Both primary and  secondary data were used for the study. Primary data were collected as survey sampling method (questionnaire, FGD, PRA etc.)  from Itna and Mithamoin Upazilla where total respondents were 119. Secondary data were collected from Upazilla  Administrations and Department of Agricultural Extension. Mainly descriptive statistics were employed to analyzing the data  using MS Excel and SPSS. Most of the respondents were farmer. Major portion of their cultivable land are low land. Rabi is the  only cropping season and during Kharif – 1, and Kharif – 2 lands became fallow due to inundate on flood water. In rabi season  boro is the main crop and damaged by flash flood due to unavailability of controlling measures. Flood control measures would be  taken to prevent huge loss of boro rice. Ampal Catchment Area has 25.273 km2 area and 4.699 km main river length, which planned to have 13 flood control construction. Until 2017, this catchment area has only three flood control construction. The watershed has only three built-in batters that are used to reduce the amount of flood discharge flowing on the Ampal river. Based on these conditions, it is necessary to analyze the magnitude of the difference of flood peak discharge on the existing condition (three bendali) compared with the condition of the plan (thirteen bendali). Therefore, analyzed the function and influence of flood control construction in Ampal Catchment Area by counting the flood peak discharge in each condition. From the analysis result, obtained the amount of peak discharge flowing in Ampal river existing condition is equal to 170,40 m3/s while at the condition of plan is equal to 83,80 m3/s. From the results of analysis, it is stated that the magnitude of the decrease of debit (ΔQ) after all the builds is 86.60 m3/s.

It is now commonly accepted that the management of flood risks has to be fulfilled within an integrated framework. About two decades ago flood risk was managed from a limited perspective predominantly by means of structural measures aimed at flood control. In contrast integrated flood risk management incorporates the complete management cycle consisting of the phases prevention, protection and preparedness. In theory it is a well described concept. In the stage of implementation, however, there is often a lack of support although a consistent policy framework exists. Consequently, the degree of implementation must be rated as inadequate in many cases. In particular this refers to the elements which focus on preparedness and prevention. The study to which this paper refers emphasises the means and potentials of scenario technique to foster the implementation of potentially appropriate measures and new societal arrangements when applied in the framework of integrated flood risk management. A literature review is carried out to reveal the state-of-the-art and the specific problem framework within which scenario technique is generally being applied. Subsequently, it is demonstrated that scenario technique is transferable to a policy making process in flood risk management that is integrated, sustainable and interactive. The study concludes with a recommendation for three applications in which the implementation of measures of flood damage prevention and preparedness is supported by scenario technique.

Despite dramatic reductions in malaria cases in the catchment area of Macha Hospital, Choma District, Southern Province in Zambia, prevalence has remained near 1–2% by RDT for the past several years. To investigate residual malaria transmission in the area, this study focuses on the relative abundance, foraging behavior, and phylogenetic relationships of Anopheles squamosus specimens. In 2011, higher than expected rates of anthropophily were observed among “zoophilic” An. squamosus, a species that had sporadically been found to contain Plasmodium falciparum sporozoites. The importance of An. squamosus in the region was reaffirmed in 2016 when P. falciparum sporozoites were detected in numerous An. squamosus specimens. This study analyzed Centers for Disease Control (CDC) light trap collections of adult mosquitoes from two collection schemes: one performed as part of a reactive-test-and-treat program and the second performed along a geographical transect. Morphological identification, molecular verification of anopheline species, and blood meal source were determined on individual samples. Data from these collections supported earlier studies demonstrating An. squamosus to be primarily exophagic and zoophilic, allowing them to evade current control measures. The phylogenetic relationships generated from the specimens in this study illustrate the existence of well supported clade structure among An. squamosus specimens, which further emphasizes the importance of molecular identification of vectors. The primarily exophagic behavior of An. squamosus in these collections also highlights that indoor vector control strategies will not be sufficient for elimination of malaria in southern Zambia.

AbstractThe COVID-19 pandemic and infection control measures had an unavoidable impact on surgical services. During the first wave of the pandemic, elective surgery, endoscopy, and ‘face-to-face’ clinics were discontinued after recommendations from professional bodies. In addition, training courses, examinations, conferences, and training rotations were postponed or cancelled. Inadvertently, infection control and prevention measures, both within and outside hospitals, have caused a significant negative impact on training. At the same time, they have given space to new technologies, like telemedicine and platforms for webinars, to blossom. While the recovery phase is well underway in some parts of the world, most surgical services are not operating at full capacity. Unfortunately, some countries are still battling a second or third wave of the pandemic with severely negative consequences on surgical services. Several studies have looked into the impact of COVID-19 on surgical training. Here, an objective overview of studies from different parts of the world is presented. Also, evidence-based solutions are suggested for future surgical training interventions.
