In this paper, a space-driven two-stage spur gear system is taken as the research object, and a 10 DOF dynamic model is established. Considering the high load characteristics of the space drive system and the time-varying stiffness and tooth clearance of the gear system, a nonlinear dynamic response analysis was performed. The characteristics of the vibration acceleration, shock and transmission error of the gear system are studied in this paper. This paper analyzes the relationship between backlash and return difference, and derives the theoretical formula between the two. The time-varying stiffness was corrected to make the theoretical model closer to reality. The research in this paper enriches the study on space drive systems and high load gear systems.

There are few studies on space-driven gear systems in the existing literature. In this paper, a spacedriven two-stage spur gear system is taken as the research object, and a 10 DOF dynamic model is established. A nonlinear dynamic response analysis was performed. The backlash was introduced into the dynamic model, and the time-varying stiffness was corrected to make the theoretical model closer to reality. By comparing two kinds of dynamic response curves with and without return difference, it was illustrated that the influence of return difference on dynamic transmission error in a gear system. The results obtained in this paper provide a reference and basis for subsequent research.

In this study, a non-linear time-varying dynamic model of a spur gear pair system is used to investigate the dynamic behavior of the system by means of multiple scale approach. Both time-varying stiffness, transmission error and tooth backlash clearance of the system are taken into account in the model. The mesh stiffness fluctuation is developed as high order Fourier series and tooth backlash clearance is fitted by high order polynomial function. The frequency factors of the system are investigated and the frequency-response equations at the case of internal and external excitation, parametric excitation and combined excitation are obtained. The peak value of the amplitude of the primary resonance, super and sub harmonic resonance and combination harmonic under internal, external and parametric excitation are researched. The approaches of vibration reduction are investigated. Finally an example is investigated using the presented process and the results indicate the sensitivity and correctness of the presented analysis approaches.

Due to the complex working environment, gear systems always suffer from multiple excitations in actual engineering. This paper concerns the frequency response characteristics of a nonlinear time-varying spur gear system subjected to multi-frequency excitation. Firstly, a single degree-of-freedom gear pair model is established with consideration of the gear backlash, time-varying mesh stiffness and multiple harmonic excitations. Then, using the multiple time scales method, a comprehensive theoretical study is conducted to analyze various resonant cases including primary, parametric and combination resonances. Besides, parametric studies are accomplished to reveal the effects of the multi-frequency excitation on gear dynamics and to provide some useful references for reducing the vibration level. With the help of the fifth-order Runge–Kutta method, the numerical results are obtained to verify the validity of the analytical solutions and to emphasize the significances of the multi-frequency excitation. In addition, a comparison is performed between the numerical results and the published experimental results to validate the proposed gear model. Results show that the presence of the multi-frequency excitation will introduce the interaction between different harmonic excitations, which significantly affects the nonlinear vibration characteristics of a spur gear system. The proposed gear model with multi-frequency excitation could be more reliable and universal than that with single-frequency excitation. In addition, the results of parametric study could provide some suggestions to designers and researchers attempting to obtain desirable dynamic behaviors of a gear system subjected to multi-frequency excitation.

The present paper is focused on the torsional instabilities of the intermediate shaft in a two stage gear system. A theoretical model is established taking account in the torsional flexibility of the intermediate shaft and the meshing time-varying stiffness of the gears. Multiple scale method is applied to analysis the instability areas of the gear system for which the generalized modal coordinate is adopted. The result is certificated by numerical integrals of the dynamic equations by Runge-Kutta Method.

Planetary gear transmission system is one of the primary parts of the wind turbine drive train. Due to the assembly state, lubrication conditions and wear, the mesh stiffness of the planetary gear system is an uncertain parameter. In this paper, taking the uncertainty of mesh stiffness into account, the dynamic responses of a wind turbine gear system subjected to wind loads and transmission error excitations are studied. Firstly, a lumped-parameter model is extended to include both the planetary and parallel gears. Then the fluctuation ranges of dynamic mesh forces are predicted quantitatively and intuitively based on the combined Chebyshev interval inclusion function and numerical integration method. Finally, examples of gear trains with different interval mesh stiffnesses are simulated and the results show that tooth separations are becoming more obvious at the resonant speed by considering the fluctuating mesh stiffness of the second parallel gear stage. The nonlinear tooth separations are degenerated obviously as the fluctuation error of the mesh stiffness of the second parallel gear set is increased.

This paper investigates the torsional vibration of a spur gear system with time-varying and square nonlinearities, by both the analytical method and numerical simulation. First, the equations of motion of a rotating spur gear system are established. Then a single-dof equivalent system is induced to describe the relative motion or torsional vibration of the gears. The harmonic balance method is used to obtain the steady-state response. Influence of the input torque on the response is discussed and a phenomenon, one resonant peak split up into two peaks when the input torque is high enough is revealed. Last, numerical simulations are carried out and bifurcation diagrams and amplitude-frequency curve is given by taking the excitation frequency as control parameter. Selected typical motions are also presented in detail by time-histories, phase portraits, Poincaré map and frequency spectra.

The effect of surface friction on the dynamic response of spur gear pair is investigated in this paper. Firstly, surface friction during the mesh is described briefly, and realistic time-varying tooth stiffness and realistic static transmission error are introduced. Subsequently, the differential equation of the torsional vibration of gear transmission is developed in which the realistic time-varying stiffness and realistic static transmission error are incorporated. Finally, using the numerical simulation method, the solutions in time domain and spectrum graphs of the nonlinear system are obtained. Results show that surface friction has great influences on the dynamic responses nearby the pitch point but less influences far away the pitch point. Surface friction may also bring sudden change to the dynamic responses at pitch point when the rotational speed is low.

In the actual measurements, vibration and noise spectrum of gear pair often exhibits sidebands around the gear mesh harmonic orders. In this study, a nonlinear time-varying dynamic model of spur gear pair was established to predict the modulation sidebands caused by the AM-FM modulation internal excitation. Here, backlash, modulation time-varying mesh stiffness, and modulation transmission error are considered. Then the undamped natural mode was studied. Numerical simulation was made to reveal the dynamic characteristic of a spur gear under modulation condition. The internal excitation was shown to exhibit obvious modulation sideband because of the modulation time-varying mesh stiffness and modulation transmission error. The Runge-Kutta method was used to solve the equations for analyzing the dynamic characteristics with the effect of modulation internal excitation. The result revealed that the response under modulation excitation exhibited obvious modulation sideband. The response under nonmodulation condition was also calculated for comparison. In addition, an experiment was done to verify the prediction of the modulation sidebands. The calculated result was consistent with the experimental result.

For the nonlinear disturbance actual issues of the model space drive mechanism two-stage spur gear system, a nonlinear dynamic model of 14-DOF (degree of freedom) two-stage spur gear with time-varying stiffness and damping was established. This model has been developed previously by the authors to access the large inertia on the dynamic response of spur gear space driving mechanism, and its effectiveness was proved by a motion simulation experiment. In this paper, the profile error (PE) and the index error (IE) were enhanced in the dynamic model. The effects of profile error, index error, and variable load torque on transmission error (TE) were analyzed, while the optimization was proposed according to the analyzed result. The peak-to-peak value of the optimized load transmission error (LTE) was reduced by 60.7%, which improved the transmission accuracy and reduced the phenomenon of disturbance. The research of nonlinear dynamical model of two-stage spur gear and the TE of the large inertia load were enriched, which provided an important reference for the actual design of the gear system.
