Transfer of knowledge and technology is the critical aspect to increasing the performance of vanilla agribusiness. Various technologies to accelerate the increasing productivity and quality of vanilla have been introduced. However, adoption at the smallholder level is still not optimal. This study aims to formulate an extension service system to accelerate technology adoption at the farmer level. The analytical method used is MICMAC. Extension activities in household approach, farm school, and farm demonstration or demonstration plot greatly influence other agribusiness components. On the other hand, the availability of other agribusiness components affects extension activities. Extension for vanilla smallholders tends to be dominated by individuals with technical aspects as the focus of the subject matter. However, behavioural and institutional elements are not yet determinants of the sustainability of the learning process. An extension service system is an integrated approach that encourages the transfer of knowledge, information, and technology as a continuous learning process. Integrated extension service system for vanilla agribusiness development based on knowledge support service. It is supported by agribusiness support service, policy, market opportunities, and industry organization. Knowledge support service encourages the establishment of individual and smallholder organization capacity development.

Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore the effect of agricultural extension services provided by public sector on the individual technology adoption behaviour of rice farmers in Sri Lanka. Design/methodology/approach The study used data from a cross sectional survey conducted in seven rice procuring regions in Sri Lanka. Eight rice technologies were selected to explore the effect of extension service on adoption behaviour of rice farmers using probit models. The extension service variable was identified as potentially endogeneous and instrumented using average extension for each region. Findings The results revealed that the extension service variable was positive and indicative of a high level of significance in all the rice technologies promoting the adoption. Hence the public agricultural extension service programmes were considered as significant explanators of technology adoption. The farmers who received agricultural extension service were more likely to adopt a technology. Social implications At present, the position of agricultural extension service is questioned and the future is unknown. Therefore, this study advises policy makers to prioritise agricultural policies to strengthen public spending on agricultural extension for effective adoption of technological innovations. Originality/value The paper adds solid empirical evidence to the literature on technology adoption behaviour from a peasant agricultural context in a developing country scenario that uses farm level data. Moreover, the study contributes to the literature by reiterating the significance of public provision of extension and training programmes as a direct motive in the technology adoption behaviour of farmers.

This article was designed to present the assessment of the effectiveness of radio - based, impact driven smallholder farmer extension service system provided by FVR to enhance accessibility of extension services to women and men in the project areas of Tanzania. Specifically, this paper assessed women and men farmers' access to ICT and factors influencing the utilization of ICT to deliver agricultural information and knowledge. The paper used data from impact assessment survey of the project conducted between April 2012 and June 2012. These data were complemented by focus group discussion involving members of gender advisory panel that had been established in the selected project sites. Quantitative data were analyzed to yield frequencies and percentages. Qualitative data were analyzed by content analysis. Even though ownership of mobile phones and radio was higher among women in all study areas both men and women farmers' had almost the same percentage in accessibility to agricultural extension information. The factors that affected women and men farmers to get quality agricultural information via these ICT tools were namely: poor radio signal reception, power outrage and poor timing of radio programs among others. This is important evidence that careful use of ICT can reduce gender imbalance in agricultural extension services and information delivery.

In recent years, the global economy has witnessed a steady transition from broad-based government development projects to community-driven participatory processes as a viable conduit for channeling development efforts. However, these participatory processes are being faced with intrinsic challenges of unsustainability, bureaucracy, funding constraints, conflicts amongst project actors, social capital problems, political power tussles, inadequate systems for tracking progress and lack of an integrated approach, which are precursors that impede the effectiveness of project implementation. Participatory processes have transformed from the use of conventional systems to applications of digital technologies in order to address these challenges. However, the existing digital technologies for participatory processes often lack a value-based approach. This inherent curb has been tackled in this study using the e3-value (value perspective) and e3-control (process perspective) ontology-based service engineering to orchestrate an innovative change in participatory processes. To realise this innovation, the proposed value-based service system was modelled on service innovation life cycle model that integrates service exploration, value co-creation, process modelling and system evaluation. Consequently, a value-based requirements specification has been constructed using a process-oriented approach, which represents a departure from the traditional functional approaches to offer leaner, flexible and market-oriented structures that guarantee better organisational performance. The requirements specification was implemented to realise a mobile cloud service system that allow seamless data sharing and facilitate participatory processes. The applicability of the service system was illustrated using an expert-driven and criteria-based usability evaluation. Consequently, the service system provides an adequate framework for communicating the understanding of services for participatory processes.

As E-learning is gaining popularity in higher education, its evaluation becomes more critical than ever, to ensure the achievement of intended learning outcome. The effectiveness of E-learning system evaluation under current practices, however, remains questionable. One reason for such uncertainty is the lack of direct measurement while learning occurs since most evaluation data is collected after the learning process. Thus this chapter proposes an integrated evaluation approach for E-learning systems based on Cognitive Load Theory and grounded in the 4C/ID-model. Both direct and indirect measurements will be deployed in the integrated approach in the context of cognitive load. Furthermore all evaluation data can be translated into practical E-learning design solutions by triangulating with the 4C/ID-model. This chapter also suggests that future evaluation framework on E-learning should include factors from attitudinal and social aspects of learning process.
