The construction of high-rise flats to minimize urban slum areas in Indonesia still create space use behavior problems for its residents due to the changes of space configuration between high-rise landed housing. Conventional high-rise flats cannot well accommodate the needs of social interactions happened in landed housing because of its spatial limitation that leads to uncertainty of space use behavior settings. This study aims to understand the relationship between spatial configuration on high-rise flats and social interaction levels of its residents. The object of study is Jatinegara Barat high-rise flats built to relocate slums community from the landed housing in Kampong Pulo. This study applies mix method research using space syntax method to analyze spatial configuration by looking at connectivity and space integration values, and then comparing it with social interaction data from place centered observation to find out the level of interaction and spaces tendency used interaction place. The results of this study indicate that: (1) the relationship of spatial configuration to social interaction level in Jatinegara Barat flats can be positive or negative. (2) Positive relationships are found on the1st and 2ndfloor areas. High configuration values with high interaction levels are found in shared spaces on the 1st and 2nd floors with characteristics such as open space, large space, and availability of interaction supporting elements, while low configuration values with low interaction levels are found in more confined spaces such as private spaces and narrow corridors. (3) Negative relationships are found in the corridor and shared space in front of the elevator on each typical floors. Shared space in front of the elevator that has high spatial configuration value with large area show a low level of social interaction. While corridor with lower configuration value with the narrow area but have supporting elements such as chairs, mats, and shops have a higher level of social interaction. (4) This study shows that in the case of the relationship between spatial configuration and social interaction, availability of interaction supporting elements has greater influence rather than any other spatial factors.

Indonesia is entering an era of urban settlement transformation from horizontal landed living settlement to low-rise settlement, into the construction of vertical high-rise settlement. This resulted in the landed settlement residents that being moved to high-rise settlement, they have encountered a change of high-rise vertical living culture that different from their living culture before. This study aims to find out the use of shared space in landed living and high-rise settlement. The research method used in this research is qualitative descriptive study. The site of the research is in the landed settlement of Kampung Pulo and the high-rise settlement of Jatinegara Barat. Kampung Pulo settlement is a residence of Jatinegara Barat residents before they are moved. The result of the research shows the change of space use for shared space from landed to high-rise settlement; (1) landed settlement more accommodate the diversity of communal activities than high- rise settlement. (2) in the landed settlement there is a territory transition space that accommodates the needs of interaction, homebased business activities, and play, whereas high-rise settlement there is no more transition space, so the need for interaction and play is contained in the public space, while the trading activities needs are mostly found within the private area. (3) In landed settlements, the shared space used for communal activities is more multifunctional than high rise settlement.

Each public open space of the housing cluster has different locations, arrangement patterns, and physical elements so that the social interactions between occupants that occur in each open space are different. Therefore, it is necessary to know how this open space affects social interactions that occur. The method used in the research is qualitative descriptive. Conduct surveys to figure the conditions that occur in the field. Then find the relationship between literature and field conditions related to open space and social interaction with users. From the results of the study, it is known that the place, structuring pattern, and physical elements of space are open to influence the social interaction of residential residents. However, from the user community, the physical element of an open space is the most influential to the social interaction of residents. Without the physical elements that encourage occupant activity, there will be no social activities and interactions in the open space.

The development of Palembang city has arisen since the National Sporting Event known as PON and also the Southeast Asian games known as SEA games thas is being held in the town. Nowadays the city has transformed itself and constantly changing for the preparation to hold another international sporting event known as Asian games in the year 2018. There are many development that is being done to the city from the building of the new infrastructure of Light Rapid Transit rails across the city and also the development of new shopping malls and even new hotels to the development of the towns open space that is a spatial spot that holds the public event and also has the particular needs to be developed to support the cities tourism. The researcher felt that development that is being done in the city is done carelessly and without careful planning and produces poor spatial products. This research purpose is to analyze the open space configuration carefully and the place that the research is being carried out is a well known open space in Palembang which is the open space of Benteng Kuto Besak, or that is well known as BKB. The elements inside BKB is not appropriate to the spatial configuration of good public space, and through the space syntax analysis to see the spatial quality we can see that there are dead spaces throughout the BKB area and the spatial elements inside the BKB are responsible for them. The purpose of this research is to understand the natural flow of space and to see the spatial logic that is intended for the BKB space. Through the spatial logic, we can also see the best space use designed for the BKB open space configuration pattern in Palembang. Keywords: open space, Benteng Kuto Besak, space syntax, spatial logic, space use

Whilst Hong Kong is suffering from a limited supply of developable land in its major urban areas, some open spaces are frequently criticized as inconvenient for users, consequently leading to an ineffective use pattern. How to enhance the performance of open space is therefore a critical issue faced by city planners. As the conventional accessibility model, which is mainly described with respect to maximum walking distance or service radius, is inadequate to give an account of the issue, this paper accordingly indicates an alternative approach and seeks an explanation from the urban configuration and the way it conditions pedestrian movement pattern. Through investigating the relationship between urban configuration, pedestrian movement and accessibility and use of open spaces based on the Wanchai District of Hong Kong, which particularly epitomizes various urban grids that may have different consequences on the utilization of open space, this study aims to examine whether there is a consistent relationship existing in different spatial grids or whether the relationship varies from different layout patterns. It is hoped that the findings can be employed to improve the performance of open spaces in the urban areas of Hong Kong, in addition to other similar urban environment.

Abstract

The quality of public outdoor space has recently become an important issue and has been revealed by many studies. However, there are few studies that show the relationship between the quality of space and the social interaction that occurs between people. The most important goal of urban designers should be to create public open spaces that can meet the various needs of people. Using longer and more frequently, public open spaces allow the fulfilment of needs and also support social interaction. In this context, the concept of 'quality' of public open spaces is gaining importance. The quality of open spaces revealed by different characteristics of the environment has been determined by evaluating of the open spaces by their inclusiveness, meaningful activities, comfort, security and pleasurability and revealed the relationship between social interaction (passive-fleeting-enduring relationship). In order to determine this relationship, a questionnaire was conducted with 140 people (70 people in each park) in Atatürk Square Park and Fatih Park in Trabzon. As a result, a high level of relationship was found between the factors of inclusiveness, comfort and meaningful activities that determine the quality of space and social interaction.

One solution for meeting the needs of habitable housing for people, especially the middle to bottom is vertical housing or flats, this makes the availability of residential demand is increasing. In the process of vertical residential development should not only be limited to the provision of the physical aspects of the building, but also must consider the availability of green open space, which is based on the Law of Indonesia no. 26 of 2007 on Spatial Planning. Provision of green open space in the flats environment are very essential since beside becoming a place for socializing, open spaces are also has ecological function as a water catchment. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between the user and the activities undertaken in theuse of green open space in the flat. The methods of research used is descriptive method to provide an overview of the user involvement and activities undertaken in the use of green open space. The results showed that the use ofgreen open spaces tend to be widely used by housewives and children paticularly in the morning and in the afternoon. The actvities include social interaction, play, sit and exercise.

The article presents the concept of monitoring buildings and infrastructure elements located near large construction investments (the construction of high-rise buildings of the Oak Terraces housing estate in Katowice and the construction of a tunnel under the roundabout in Katowice along the intercity express road DTŚ). The impacts include deep excavation, lowering of the groundwater level over a large area, and dynamic influences related to the use of impact methods of soil improvement. The presented monitoring includes observation of the groundwater level with the use of piezometers, geodetic measurements of settlement and inclinations, as well as the measurement of vibration amplitudes generated during the works involving shocks and vibrations. It was also important to observe the development of cracks on the basis of a previously made inventory of damage. The results of the monitoring allow corrections to be made in the technology of works (e.g., reduction of vibration amplitudes, application of additional protections at excavations, etc.) or the use additional safety measures. Currently, there are also monitoring systems used during the operation of completed facilities.

The rising cost of floods is increasingly attributed to the pattern and form of the built environment. Our study empirically tests this notion by examining the relationship between development intensity and property damage caused by floods. We examine five years of insured flood loss claims across 144 counties and parishes fringing the Gulf of Mexico. Results indicate that clustered, high-intensity development patterns significantly reduce amounts of reported property damage, while increasing percentages of sprawling, low-intensity development involving recent conversion of open space greatly exacerbate flood losses. These findings demonstrate the importance of community development design in fostering flood-resilient communities.
