Magnetic objective lenses, from the point of view of pole piece geometry, can he roughly classified into two types, viz., symmetrical and asymmetrical. In the case of the former, the optical properties have been calculated by several authors1-3) and the results would appear to suggest that, in order to reduce the spherical and chromatic aberration coefficients, Cs and Cc, it is necessary to decrease the half-width value of the axial field distribution and to increase the peak flux density. The expressions for either minimum Cs or minimum Cc were presented in the form of ‘universal’ curves by Mulvey and Wallington4).

AbstractAs the range of potential uses for Artificial Intelligence (AI), in particular machine learning (ML), has increased, so has awareness of the associated ethical issues. This increased awareness has led to the realisation that existing legislation and regulation provides insufficient protection to individuals, groups, society, and the environment from AI harms. In response to this realisation, there has been a proliferation of principle-based ethics codes, guidelines and frameworks. However, it has become increasingly clear that a significant gap exists between the theory of AI ethics principles and the practical design of AI systems. In previous work, we analysed whether it is possible to close this gap between the ‘what’ and the ‘how’ of AI ethics through the use of tools and methods designed to help AI developers, engineers, and designers translate principles into practice. We concluded that this method of closure is currently ineffective as almost all existing translational tools and methods are either too flexible (and thus vulnerable to ethics washing) or too strict (unresponsive to context). This raised the question: if, even with technical guidance, AI ethics is challenging to embed in the process of algorithmic design, is the entire pro-ethical design endeavour rendered futile? And, if no, then how can AI ethics be made useful for AI practitioners? This is the question we seek to address here by exploring why principles and technical translational tools are still needed even if they are limited, and how these limitations can be potentially overcome by providing theoretical grounding of a concept that has been termed ‘Ethics as a Service.’

Momentum exchange impact dampers (MEIDs) were proposed to control the shock responses of mechanical structures. They were applied to reduce floor shock vibrations and control lunar/planetary exploration spacecraft landings. MEIDs are required to control an object’s velocity and displacement, especially for applications involving spacecraft landing. Previous studies verified numerous MEID performances through various types of simulations and experiments. However, previous studies discussing the optimal design methodology for MEIDs are limited. This study explicitly derived the optimal design parameters of MEIDs, which control the controlled object’s displacement and velocity to zero in one-dimensional motion. In addition, the study derived sub-optimal design parameters to control the controlled object’s velocity within a reasonable approximation to derive a practical design methodology for MEIDs. The derived sub-optimal design methodology could also be applied to MEIDs in two-dimensional motion. Furthermore, simulations conducted in the study verified the performances of MEIDs with optimal/sub-optimal design parameters.

The present paper is a report on the construction of nomograms to ascertain the domain of elastic-inertial-damping characteristics required in vibrating machine-foundation systems, in order to ensure that ergonomic and other technical constraints are complied with. Nomograms, which are the graphic representation of mathematical models in nondimensional form, prove to be an effective instrument for orientation in the design stage.

In 2006, the town council of Slany decided to respond to the new trend of regional policy in the Central Bohemia region and focused on the revitalization of the historic core of the town. The large-scale project was assigned to a team of professionals (teachers and graduates of the Faculty of Civil Engineering of the Czech Technical University in Prague), led by Professor Sykora. Team members are to deal with issues of historical centre. The project presented a challenge to test theory, principles and procedures in practical design. The projected area featured Masaryk Square and 22 adjacent streets defined by the existing town walls. The reconstruction project of Vinarickeho Street was the first part of the overall project of revitalization of the historic core of the town chosen to implement. This reconstruction was one of the most technically, organizationally and financially complex works that have been undertaken in Slany recently. Construction started in November 2010 and lasted one year. Although this is a project of smaller scope, thanks to its complexity, sensitive approach and craftsmanship it brought the creators the price Construction of the Year 2012 in the Central Bohemia region and advanced to the second round in the competition Construction of the Year 2012 in Czech Republic.
