The increased pace of scientific research and technological development since the Second World War has resulted in an "explosion" in the amount of information being produced in scientific and technical fields. It has been calculated that the published literature of these fields doubles every ten years. Most industries have been affected by this and the petroleum exploration industry is no exception. Exploration companies are prolific producers of information, particularly that resulting from their field operations.The information needs of the management and technical staff of exploration companies cover a very wide field of diverse material, which includes legal, financial, economic, industrial and statistical material, as well as geological and geophysical data and its interpretation. Relevant external material includes information on exploration methods and equipment, laws and regulations governing exploration in Australia, and the status and activities of competitors in the industry. All this comes from many and varied sources, and may be in conventional forms (books, journals, maps, etc) or in forms peculiar to the exploration industry itself (e.g. seismic sections and well logs). Internal information is even more complex in content and form, comprising field data of all kinds, reports, maps and diagrams, seismic sections and records, well logs, aerial photographs, and many other items.The difficulties presented by such a mass of varied and complex material are best overcome by the establishment of a "special library" in the charge of a professional librarian. A "special library" is one serving a specialist clientele and covering a particular field of knowledge. Professional librarians - or information officers - have been trained to gather, index, store, retrieve and disseminate information of all kinds; these tasks comprise the routine work of a special library. They are performed by adapting the standardised guidelines of librarianship to suit the specialised nature of the industry being served. Librarians are also trained in such tasks as literature research and compilation of information dossiers.The establishment of a special library under a qualified librarian provides an exploration company with:a centre for the integration of all kinds of information material; andan active information service.It thus enables a company to make the maximum use of all available information which may be relevant to its purposes.

A construction of breakwaters and other shoreline structures on part of a coast influences drift sand transport in the bay, and causes comprehensive topographic changes on the beach. This study investigated shoreline and coastal changes, taking as an example of Shiraragahama Beach in Miiraku on the northwestern end of Fukue Island, Nagasaki Prefecture (Kyushu, Japan). Miiraku, adjacent to Saikai National Park, appears in the revered 8th century poetry collection “Manyoshu” and served as a port for a ship taken by the Japanese envoy to China during the Tang Dynasty (618-709). Because of the recent development of breakwaters for a fishing harbor, the shore environments of this beach have changed significantly. In this study, the status of silt deposits and topographic changes on this beach arising from the construction of a harbor breakwater were evaluated by comparing aerial photographs taken in different years. Next, the changes in the shoreline visible from aerial photographs from 1947 to 2014 were analyzed. Lastly, the altitude of the beaches was measured using accurate survey methods. The following results were obtained: 1) coastal erosion made rock cliffs to fall off along the shore and deposited sand on this beach; 2) the more serious advances or retreats of the shoreline took place around shoreline structures; 3) sandbars and beach cliffs were formed.

Datafication, the technological development that emerged out of computerization and global interconnectedness, has spawned new forms of societal self-observations. In the present article I turn to the example of Open Data web portals – specialized websites that make large amounts of governmental datasets publicly available – to show how they relate to the status quo of social research on functional differentiation. For my analysis of the Chilean Portal de Datos Públicos I developed a method to link metadata categories from the web portal to a hard-core list of ten function systems. My results confirm literature, which finds economized or politicized forms of societal self-description. Moreover the results are in line with studies that show the vanishing role of religion. Interestingly, my study finds health to be of high importance – I might even speak of a “healthized” self-observation – which I argue is at odds with a negligible representation of the function system “sport” within the self-observation. For future interfunctional social research in the time of datafication, I recommend sharpening the empirical approach by exploring emerging text-as-data methods.

The article deals with the rights of the child and parents in the Muslim family law of the early Middle Ages and its formation in the 8th-10th centuries. The key rights of the child were determined and explained: the right to life, the right to naming, the right to nafaka-the right to financial support-the right to the awareness of his or her genealogy, the right to breastfeeding and the right to up-bringing (al-hidana). In addition, the article provides for the following classifications of the rights in question: basic, financial-economic, religious-ethical. Also, the author considers the issue of prohibition of adoption and gives the definition of an orphan (jatim) under Muslim family law, elucidates peculiarities of the status of orphans, the mechanism for protecting property rights of orphans, rights and duties of guardians with respect of orphans and their property, powers of the kadia (judge) regarding the issue of protecting the rights of orphans, types of guardianship. The reasons and procedure for deprivation of guardianship are also examined. In addition, the author considers parental property rights regarding children.

<p>PLATO is an ESA mission dedicated to the study of exoplanets and stars, with a planned launch date in 2026. By performing photometric monitoring of about 250 000 bright stars (m<sub>V</sub> < 13), PLATO will be able to discover and characterise hundreds of exoplanets, including small planets orbiting up to the habitable zone of solar-like stars. PLATO’s precision will also allow for a precise characterisation of the host stars through asteroseismology. These objectives require both a wide field of view and high sensitivity, which are achieved with a payload comprising 24 cameras with partially overlapping fields of view. They are complemented by 2 more cameras optimised for brighter stars that will also be used as fine guidance sensor. The PLATO development phase started after the mission adoption in July 2017. The Mission Preliminary Design Review (PDR) was declared successful in October 2020. The implementation and delivery to ESA of the flight model CCDs for all cameras (4 CCDs per camera) has been completed. Currently the Structural Thermal Model (STM) of the payload optical bench is being manufactured, while the STM of a single camera has already been successfully tested. In parallel, a first engineering model of a complete, fully functional camera is being integrated, to verify its performance under operational conditions, and the qualification models of the different payload units are being built.</p> <p>We will present the status of the PLATO payload implementation in the context of the satellite development. In particular, we will describe the payload manufacturing, integration, and tests that will be reviewed at the Critical Milestone in the second half of 2021. We will also summarise the progress made in the science preparation activities, as well as on the ground segment.</p>

This chapter describes how health is the most precious component for the happiness and all-round development of human being in the society. Alongside this, information is an important resource for individual growth and survival. Therefore, a Health Information System (HIS) is a system for collecting/processing of data from various sources, and using the information for policy-making and management of health services. This chapter discusses health literacy and its association with health information needs and health information literacy, the status of women in India and their influence in the well-being of the family, and the impact of HIS. This chapter also proves that with enough data obtained from the women of Kanyakumari District in India, the government's policy needs to be directed towards women for the success of its health-care programmes.

Purpose The library orientation session is an important marketing tool because it offers the first opportunity for library staff to connect with new clients (Craft and Ballard-Thrower, 2011; Rhoades and Hartsell, 2008). This paper aims to explore library orientation practices in special libraries and information centers with the goal of surveying current practices and identifying guidance for successful orientation program design and delivery. Design/methodology/approach This study explored library orientation practices in special libraries and information services through an electronic survey. The survey questions were developed based on themes that emerged from case studies on library orientations from the academic library literature. These themes included reasons for library orientation program redesigns, the importance of partnerships in orientation design and delivery and the tools and techniques used in the delivery of orientation sessions. Findings The results revealed that library orientations are taking place in special libraries, but there is no consistent approach to library orientation delivery. Even within a single library, multiple approaches to library orientations are taken based on client availability, demand and information needs observations of library staff. Participants’ responses were analyzed to develop recommendations for special library orientations. These include developing partnerships (particularly with human resource departments), using technology strategically, considering the timing of orientations for new potential clients in relation to their start as new employees in the host organization, customizing library orientations based on client segment, engaging in ongoing outreach, and being flexible in design and delivery methods. Research limitations/implications This study represents a starting step in an exploration of library orientation practices in special libraries. The key limitation of this study was the low response rate leading to small sample size. A larger sample of special libraries would be needed to produce a quantitative analysis of the prevalence of practices with an acceptable degree of statistical significance. Alternately, smaller samples of special libraries organized by characteristics such as size or type (e.g. corporate libraries, law libraries and medical libraries) could be conducted to determine if distinctive trends exist within these special library types. Practical implications This study revealed information about key practices and challenges that can be used by special library practitioners seeking to implement or redesign a library orientation program in their library. Originality/value While academic and practitioner literature exists detailing library orientation activities in academic and school libraries, there are very few papers on special library orientations. This study fills a gap in the literature by investigating library orientation practices in special libraries and information centers.

Temperature data from petroleum exploration well logs of 3360 wells in a region of west-central Alberta are used to estimate thermal gradients. A relatively high geothermal gradient (~36 °C/km) of oblong shape located near Hinton is observed. The axis of the anomaly strikes approximately southwest–northeast and passes through the Miette Hot Springs area. It appears that water is heated at depth in the Rocky Mountain disturbed region and travels eastward and toward the surface along fault planes.

At the time of a disaster, Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism (MLIT) inspects the facilities under its jurisdiction and promptly collects infrastructure damage information. It may be difficult to grasp the damage information depending on when the disaster occurred; the time, size, and distribution of the damage; the weather; and so forth. Even in such a case, it is necessary to grasp the damage situation based on the limited available information, establish a system for the initial response, and proceed with the disaster response. National Institute for Land and Infrastructure Management (NILIM) has developed the technology to collect infrastructure damage information with the necessary promptness, coverage, and reliability, using every kind of technology available and providing the necessary information for decision making. This study conducted a survey of officials who had been engaged in earthquake response following the 2016 Kumamoto Earthquakes, among others. The necessary technology has been developed to collect, integrate, and share disaster damage information according to the situation by considering that the information needs in disaster response changes from moment to moment, and such technology has been successively implemented on site. This paper describes the results of and the knowledge gained from this technological development and notes the study’s findings on the information needs and the efforts that need to be made in the future.

Energy saving of iron-making system and secondary energy recovery are the main approaches for the Chinese steel industry’s sustainable development. The theoretical analysis of secondary energy generation of four typical BF-BOF steel manufacturing processes showed that improving the resource and energy efficiency, and strengthening recovery and rational utilization of by-product gases are the main way of energy saving for steel industry. According to the status of secondary energy recovery of Chinese steel industry, the technological development tendency energy saving, greenhouse gas emission reduction for Chinese steel industry are presented.
