Studies on frost injury to wheat. I. Laboratory freezing tests in relation to the behaviour of varieties in the field

Factors influencing the reactions of different varieties of wheat to stem and ear frosting were studied under controlled conditions and in the field. Artificial freezing tests were successful in demonstrating varietal differences in resistance, but these were not always in agreement with behaviour under commercial cultivation. Thus, whereas the American winter wheat Cheyenne showed resistance superior to that of the Australian varieties Bencubbin and Gabo, the observed superiority of Bencubbin over Gabo in the field was not maintained under controlled conditions. A possible explanation for this anomaly lies in the unequal distribution of temperature which obtains within a crop. On several frosty nights the ears and stems of Gabo, owing to their more forward development, were observed to be in a colder zone than those of Bencubbin. These conditions were not reproduced in the freezing cabinet, and comparisons between plants at different stages of growth failed to show any marked change in resistance with age up to the time of ear emergence. The relationship between temperature of freezing and degree of injury was established under different sets of conditions. In one case interaction between the effects of temperature and variety showed that this factor may be of some importance in the interpretation of results of freezing trials.

The effects of temperature and wetness duration on the infection of pear leaves (Pyrus communis L.) by Venturia pirina were studied by inoculating plants with ascospores and conidia under controlled conditions and in the field. Under controlled inoculations, minimum wetness durations that lead to leaf infections by ascospores were 27, 15, 13, 11, 10, 9, and 9 h at 4, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, and 25°C, respectively. In parallel inoculations with conidia, the minimum wetness durations that lead to leaf infections were similar to ascospores at temperatures between 12°C and 25°C, but at lower temperatures (4, 8, 10°C), conidia infected leaves only after an additional 2 h of leaf wetness. The relationship between minimum wetness times and temperature was best described using an exponential regression. In field experiments, leaf infection on plants inoculated with ascospores and conidia under various naturally occurring wetness and temperature conditions was in close agreement with those under controlled conditions. Disease severity (percent of leaf area infected) increased with increasing leaf wetness duration at all temperatures. The optimum temperature for infection was 20°C. Analysis of variance with orthogonal polynomial contrasts was used to define the relationship of the angular transformation of disease severity to temperature and leaf wetness duration.

The aim of this study is to investigate the relationship between extrinsic and intrinsic reward on retention among Gen Y employees in Malaysian manufacturing companies. The data was collected from 113 respondents worked in manufacturing companies located in Seri Kembangan, Selangor using questionnaires. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to test the hypotheses. The results showed both extrinsic and intrinsic reward are the factors influencing retaining Gen Y in manufacturing companies. The discussion on the analysis, limitation of the study, recommendation for future research and conclusion were discussed at the end of this study. In a nutshell, it was proven extrinsic reward and intrinsic reward has contributed to the retention of Gen Y employees.

Lithium is a critical element for the modern society due to its uses in various industrial sectors. Despite its unequal distribution in the environment, Li occurrence in Romania was scarcely studied. In this study a versatile measurement method using ICP-MS technique was optimized for the determination of Li from various matrixes. Water, soil, and plant samples were collected from two important karst areas in the Dobrogea and Banat regions, Romania. The Li content was analyzed together with other macro- and microelement contents to find the relationship between the concentration of elements and their effect on the plants’ Li uptake. In Dobrogea region, half of the studied waters had high Li concentration, ranging between 3.00 and 12.2 μg/L in the case of water and between 0.88 and 11.1 mg/kg DW in the case of plants, while the Li content in the soil samples were slightly comparable (from 9.85 to 11.3 mg/kg DW). In the Banat region, the concentration of Li was lower than in Dobrogea (1.40–1.46 μg/L in water, 6.50–9.12 mg/kg DW in soil, and 0.19–0.45 mg/kg DW in plants). Despite the high Li contents in soil, the Li was mostly unavailable for plants uptake and bioaccumulation.

AbstractThis paper comprises a review of the published literature (1936-1979) dealing with the relationship between the chemical constituents of tobacco and smoke and tobacco and smoke quality. Various components thought to be influential in determining quality are identified; conclusions of researchers regarding the effects of these components are recorded and discussed. A summary table is presented which details the nature of the relationship between these constituents and tobacco quality.

AbstractMost Pinus species are obligate seeders. Thus, knowledge of germination characteristics can help in the understanding, prediction and manipulation of the regeneration and dynamics of pine forests. Seven pine species with contrasting habitat preferences and different genetic pairwise distances are present in the Iberian Peninsula and the Canary Islands: P. halepensis, P. nigra, P. pinaster, P. pinea, P. sylvestris, P. uncinata and P. canariensis. These seven pine species comprise an exceptional experimental set to test some questions related to germination traits, such as: (1) What are the effects of light and temperature on germination, taking into account interpopulation variability? (2) Is there any association of germination traits with habitat (montane versus lowland) preferences? and (3) What is the relationship between germination traits and the genetic distance between pine species? P. nigra, P. sylvestris and P. uncinata seeds showed faster germination rates. Seeds of P. nigra and P. sylvestris reached high total germination percentages in every temperature and light treatment, suggesting an opportunistic germination strategy. Unlike montane pines, lowland pines did show significant effects of temperature on germination response: final germination was higher between 15°C and 20°C than at warmer and alternating temperatures. Relatively low temperatures associated with the winter rainy season would favour germination of most of these species. Nested models showed that population variability was the main source of variation in germination response. Thus, there is no phylogenetic control of the germination response and, surprisingly, germination traits were not related to habitat preferences. As a consequence, we believe that studies of the germination characteristics of a pine species should consider different populations.



The spectroscopic determination of the oxygen dissociation curves of haemoglobin has an advantage over the tonometer and gas analysis method, in that much smaller quantities of haemoglobin can be made use of. The spectroscopic method was used to determine the relationship between the foetal and maternal haemoglobins in the sheep during a study of foetal respiration made by Barcroft (1935). The conditions for the comparison of the haemoglobins were a dilute solution of the haemoglobin at p H 9·2 (borate buffer) and at 20° C. These conditions were chosen because of the very accurate determinations of the dissociation curves of dilute haemoglobin of the sheep by Forbes and Roughton (1931) and because these authors recommend p H 9·2 at room temperature as most suitable for a study of the oxygen equilibrium of haemoglobin, all the haemoglobin being in the form of the alkali salt. McCarthy (1933) and Hall (1934) had found previously that the haemoglobins of the foetal and maternal goat were different, the foetal haemoglobin (in the blood and as purified haemoglobin) having a higher affinity for oxygen. The same relationship was found to exist in the sheep haemoglobins in dilute solution at 20° C and p H 9·2. When samples of human foetal and maternal blood (sent by Professor Fleming from the Obstetrical Department of the Royal Free Hospital) were compared in dilute solution it was found that the foetal haemoglobin had a lower affinity for oxygen than the maternal. This was also found by Haurowitz (1935) for dilute solutions of the haemoglobins of mother and new born infant. Haurowitz, however, pointed out that in the corpuscles the affinity for oxygen is less in the infant’s haemoglobin than in that of the mother, but the method used by him did not allow of measurements on suspensions of corpuscles. In the present work the dissociation curves of dilute suspensions of corpuscles have been compared with similar solutions of the haemoglobin. It was found that the relationship of the dissociation curves for human foetal and maternal corpuscles is the same as that found by Barcroft in the goat and in the sheep. It has now been found that by a dilution of human adult haemoglobin the dissociation curve is altered by 200% to a position of higher affinity for oxygen, without any marked change in shape. The haemoglobin of the human foetus, on the other hand, is much less affected by dilution, thus explaining the anomaly of the reversed relationship when solutions of the haemoglobins are used instead of suspensions of corpuscles. It was shown by the work of Bock, Field, and Adair (1924), and by Adair (1925), that a solution of haemoglobin free from stromata and of a similar concentration to blood gives a dissociation curve like whole blood. This makes it clear that in the comparison of dilute haemoglobin solutions with suspensions of corpuscles we are concerned, not simply with a change in the haemoglobin due to haemolysis, but a change due to a dilution of the contents of the corpuscle.

The objective of this paper is to evaluate the relationship between FDI and wage rates using the wellestablished Granger causality method but with a panel data setting. The paper considers the dynamic relationship between these two variables for 27 provinces over the 1985 – 2000 period. We also distinguish between the coastal and inland provinces. Results indicate that Granger causality runs from FDI to wages for the coastal provinces but no significant relationships are found for the inland provinces. These results imply that FDI is a contributing factor for increasing wage rates in China. In particular, our findings show that the “cheap labour” hypothesis does not apply for China. It further indicates that increasing inflow of FDI into the coastal provinces relative to the inland provinces exacerbate the unequal distribution of wealth between the regions.

This study is on the production of quicklime from Ashaka limestone through calcination process. Effects of temperature, particle size and time on quicklime yield were determined. The experiment was carried out at temperatures of 800, 900, 1000, 1100 and 1200 0C, particle sizes of 80mm, 90mm, 100mm, 300mm and 425mm and times of 0.5hr, 1hr, 2hrs, 3hrs and 4hrs. Analyses of the results showed that quicklime was successfully produced from Ashaka limestone through the calcination process. Quadratic model adequately described the relationship between quicklime yield and calcination factors of temperature, particle size and time. Recorded model F-value of 134.35 implies that the model is significant. The predicted R² of 0.9597 is in reasonable agreement with the adjusted R² of 0.9844; the difference is less than the critical value of 0.2. Optimum yield of 73.48% was obtained at optima operating conditions; temperature of 1000 0C, particle size of 90 µm and time of 3 hrs.

The purpose of this study is to find out the empirical relationship and influence of Research Environment, Integration of the university with Industry, High-tech Employment and Professional & Managerial Development on the University Performance.A Questionnaire has been used to collect the data. Correlation and Regression analysis were used to determine the relationship and influence of identified dimensions over the University Performance.The findings of the study show that the identified dimensions significantly relate and influence the University Performance. This study would be helpful for the university administration while making policies to upgrade its performance. Less work has been done in Pakistan for the development of universities. This study distinctively identifies and represents the variables and their influence over the university performance. The findings increase the value of the study as it would help the decision makers at the universities to think ‘out of the box’.
