The reactivity of 4-nitrophenyl acetate has been examined in solutions of mono-, di-, and tri-hydroxy- cholanates and their taurine and glycine conjugates. The effect of cholate solutions on the stability of acetylsalicylic acid, phenyl salicylate and benzaldehyde diethyl acetal has also been determined. At the bile salt concentrations and in the pH range of the duodenum, bile salts do not significantly influence the stability of these compounds.

In an autoperfused dog ileum preparation, artificial pressure, venous outflow pressure, blood flow, and arteriovenous oxygen difference were measured while bile and bile salt solutions, at physiological concentrations, were placed in the lumen. Intraluminal placement of endogenous bile, synthetic bile, or bile salt solutions increased ileal blood flow (99 +/- 10, 94 +/- 20, and 104 +/- 17%, respectively) and oxygen uptake (30 +/- 5, 36 +/- 9, and 28 +/- 5%, respectively). Endogenous bile pretreated with cholestyramine, a bile salt-sequestering resin, did not alter ileal blood flow, yet increased ileal oxygen uptake by 11 +/- 3%, a response similar to that observed while Tyrode's solution (the vehicle) was in the lumen. Intra-arterial infusion of bile salts increased ileal blood flow in a dose-dependent manner, while not significantly altering ileal oxygen uptake. The results of the present study indicate that bile salts play an important role in the functional (postprandial) hyperemia in the ileum by 1) directly dilating the ileal vasculature and 2) enhancing ileal metabolism during their active absorption.

1. The solubility of fatty acids in aqueous solutions containing bile salts and lysolecithin at pH values between 2.0 and 7.4 was studied. Both the 1-acyl and 2-acyl isomers of lysolecithin increased the solubility of fatty acids to the same extent, the order of solubility being linoleic > oleic > elaidic > palmitic > stearic.2. The influence of the products of phospholipolysis of lecithin on palmitic acid solubility was determined. On a molar basis, lysolecithin was more effective than were bile salts in promoting the solubilization of the fatty acid.3. In bile salt solutions in which the phospholipid concentration was constant on a molar basis, the solubility of palmitic acid decreased linearly with the progressive replacement of lecithin by lysolecithin. Palmitic acid was solubilized to the same extent on replacing lecithin with lysolecithin on a constant weight basis.4. In bile salt solution containing lysolecithin and oleic acid in equimolar amounts, the solubility of palmitic acid was similar to that in bile salt solutions containing lecithin in equivalent proportion.5. The results are discussed in relation to the action of phospholipolytic activity on the intestinal absorption of fatty acids in sheep.

Tabah bamboo shoot pickle is one of the fermented food which is the source of lactic acid bacteria.  Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) is beneficial to health because it has the ability as a probiotic. Lactic acid bacteria that have probiotic criteria should have resistance to low pH and bile salts. This study aims to determine isolates of lactic acid bacteria isolated from tabah bamboo shoot pickle resistant to low pH and bile salts (NaDC). Lactic acid bacteria were tested to low pH by using MRS broth that have different pH (pH 2, pH 3, pH 4 and pH 6.2 as a control) incubated at 37ºC for 3 hours. isolates were survive in low pH then continued in bile salt resistance test with 0.3% bile salt concentration for 15 minutes, 30 minutes, 45 minutes, 60 minutes and 24 hours. The results showed that three isolates out of 88 isolates had ability to grow in low pH and in medium supplemented by NaDC 0,3%. The isolates are AR 3057, AR 3101 and AR 6152 which can be used as candidat of  probiotic. Keywords : Tabah bamboo shoot pickle, lactic acid bacteria, probiotic, low pH, bile salt

The Schiff base, N-n-butylsalicylideneimine, extracts more than 99.8% beryllium into toluene from dilute aqueous solution. The distribution of beryllium has been studied in the pH range 5-13 and is discussed in terms of the several complex equilibria in aqueous solution. The stability constants of the complexes formed between beryllium and the Schiff base are log β1 11.1 and log β2 20.4, and the distribution coefficient of the bis complex is 550. Over most of the pH range, hydrolysis of the Be2+ ion competes with complex formation and provides a means of measuring the hydrolysis constants. They are for the reactions: Be(H2O)42+ ↔ 2H+ + Be(H2O)2(OH)2, log*β2 - 13.65; Be(H2O)42+ ↔ 3H+ + Be(H2O)(OH)3-, log*β3 -24.11.

AbstractA potentiometric titration method (PT) and a stopped-flow kinetic technique monitored by a UV−Vis spectroscopy have been used to characterize the stability of series of Co(II)- and Ni(II)-thiodiacetato complexes, M(TDA), in the presence of 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) or 2,2’-bipyridine (bipy) in aqueous solutions. The stability constants of the binary (1:1), ternary (1:1:1) as well as the resulting hydroxo complexes were evaluated and compared to the corresponding oxydiacetate complexes. Based on the species distribution as a function of pH the relative predominance of the species in the system over a pH range was discussed. Furthermore, the kinetic measurements of the substitution reactions of the aqua ligands to phen or bipy in the coordination sphere of the binary complexes M(TDA) were performed in the 288–303 K temperature range, at a constant concentration of phen or bipy and at seven different concentrations of the binary complexes (0.2–0.5 mM). The kinetic stability of the M(TDA) complexes was discussed in relation to the experimental conditions and the kind of the auxiliary ligands (phen/bipy). Moreover, the influence of the type of primary ligand (thiodiacetate/oxydiacetate) on the substitution rate of the auxiliary ligands was also compared.

The phosphatidyl translocating activity of the mdr2 P-glycoprotein (Pgp) in the canalicular membrane of the mouse hepatocyte is a rate-controlling step in the biliary secretion of phospholipid. Since bile salts also regulate the secretion of biliary lipids, we investigated the influence of the type of bile salt in the circulation on mdr2 Pgp expression and activity. Male mice were fed a purified diet to which either 0.1% (w/w) cholate or 0.5% (w/w) ursodeoxycholate was added. This led to a near-complete replacement of the endogenous bile salt pool (mainly tauromuricholate) by taurocholate or tauroursodeoxycholate respectively. The phospholipid secretion capacity was then determined by infusion of increasing amounts of tauroursodeoxycholate. Cholate feeding resulted in a 55% increase in maximal phospholipid secretion compared with that in mice on the control diet. Northern blotting revealed that cholate feeding increased mdr2 Pgp mRNA levels by 42%. Feeding with ursodeoxycholate did not influence the maximum rate of phospholipid output or the mdr2 mRNA content. Female mice had a higher basal mdr2 Pgp mRNA level than male mice, and this was also correlated with a higher phospholipid secretion capacity. This could be explained by the 4-fold higher basal cholate content in the bile of female compared with male mice. Our results suggest that the type of bile salts in the circulation influences the expression of the mdr2 gene.
