The age of striped marlin (Kajikia audax) in days and years (daily and yearly ages) were estimated by counts of otolith microincrements (n=25) and dorsal fin spine annuli (n=175) using specimens caught in the tropical eastern North Pacific between September and November 2004. Daily ages of small striped marlin (87.0–145.5cm lower jaw–fork length) were estimated to range from 81 to 239 days, which indicates that the species in the area grow, on average, to over 100cm within 4 months. Back-calculated hatch dates were estimated to be from March to July; this period is earlier than the known spawning season in a slightly more northern area. Approximately 20% of these year-0 striped marlin had one or more growth bands in the sectioned spine. They were thought to be false annual growth bands and excluded from yearly age estimation. The estimated yearly age of 175 individuals (87.0–228.4cm) ranged from 0 to 5 and was dominated by ages-0 to 3 (>90%). Age composition was different among three subregions in the eastern North Pacific.

Chlorophthalmus imperator sp. nov. (Teleostei: Chlorophthalmidae) is described on the basis of nine specimens (98.1–174.8 mm SL) from the Emperor Seamount Chain in the central North Pacific. The new species is characterized by the following combination of characters: 49–51 lateral-line scales; 6 scale rows above lateral line; 3 + 19–22 = 22–25 (modally 22) gill rakers; outermost tooth patches of lower jaw with 6–14 large thorn-shaped teeth, the tips projecting in advance of lower-jaw profile; lower-jaw symphysis with two distinct moderately-sized projections; tongue without teeth; pelvic-fin origin vertically below 4th or 5th (usually 5th) dorsal-fin ray base; head length 26.7–28.9 (mean 27.7) % SL; snout length 6.9–7.7 (7.3) % SL; horizontal orbit diameter 11.9–12.9 (12.3) % SL; upper-jaw length 11.7–13.2 (12.6) % SL; maxillary depth 3.1–3.8 (3.4) % SL; pre-dorsal-fin length 34.2–36.6 (35.3) % SL; pre-pectoral-fin length 27.3–29.8 (27.9) % SL; anus to anal-fin origin length 27.3–29.9 (28.5) % SL; pectoral-fin length 21.0–24.9 (22.7) % SL.

Age determination and growth estimation of blue marlin (Makaira nigricans) were performed by combining method of otolith micro-increment counts of 27 young (17–185-cm lower jaw–fork length, LJFL) and sectioned dorsal fin spines of 571 adult individuals (155–352cm). Otolith micro-increments were counted with ages of 26–338 days old. The estimated mean length (185cm) at Year 1 and growth rate were used to predict the position of the first annual growth band in sectioned fin spines. Distinct growth bands were formed in fin spines annually between September and October. Indistinct growth bands were considered false-annual growth bands. The observed and back-calculated LJFLs at each age were highly variable for both sexes. Von Bertalanffy growth parameters were estimated using mean back-calculated LJFL data as: L∞=295cm, k=0.23, t0=–3.31 years for females and 212cm, 0.29, –4.49 years for males. Females grew to >200cm in 2 years and to >250cm in 5 years on average, whereas the growth of males slowed appreciably after they reached the age of 1 year. This is the first study of blue marlin growth for entire life stages.

Specimens (733) Istiophorus platypterus eaughl by sport fishing in the soulhern 01' the California Gulf were me¡lsured. The fourth  spine nI' the dorsal fin was collected to estimate the age and individuals from 1 to 8 years were found. The majority of lhe specimens were between 180 and 210 cm in lower jaw-fork length. The Bertalanffy growth ecuation estimrrted using length was: L,=203.6[ l_eo,ü+ooO';']. Growth was sllOwn to very fast in [he early years.

Model pengkajian stok melalui data frekuensi panjang lebih banyak digunakan karena data tersebut paling banyak tersedia dan mudah didapatkan dibandingkan data pengukuran jaringan keras (sisik, otolith, sirip dan tulang belakang) dan tagging. Khusus untuk ikan pedang, data panjang yang tersedia sebagian besar tidak standar dikarenakan ikan pedang yang tertangkap langsung diproses di laut yang mana bagian kepala, sirip, isi perut dibuang. Oleh karena itu dibutuhkan persamaan empiris untuk konversi dari ukuran non-standar ke standar sehingga bisa digunakan sebagai basis data pengkajian stok yang berbasis data tersebut. Data primer merupakan hasil observasi laut selama kurun waktuMaret 2011 sampai dengan Desember 2013, sedangkan data sekunder merupakan data observasi ilmiah Loka Penelitian Perikanan Tuna periode 2005-2013. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan terdapat korelasi yang signifikan antara beberapa parametermorfometrik ikan pedang yang diukur yakni panjang dari pangkal sirip dada ke ujung lekukan tengah sirip ekor (LJFL), panjang dari mata ke ujung lekukan tengah sirip ekor (EFL) dan panjang dari ujung rahang bawah ke ujung lekukan tengah sirip ekor (PFL) (R2 > 0,97; P < 0,01), akan tetapi tidak ada perbedaan yang nyata antara morfometri ikan pedang dan jenis kelamin (EFL-LJFL, P > 0,05 dan PFL-LJFL, P > 0,05). Hubungan antara nisbah kelamin dengan panjang ikan signifikan (Nisbah Kelamin = 0,0175 LJFL – 3,1001; n = 6, selang kelas 5 cm; P < 0,01) yang mana ikan pedang dengan ukuran lebih dari 260 cmadalah betina.Stock assessment models using length frequency data are more frequently used by Indonesian scientist due to its availability and easily obtained rather than skeletal parts or tagging data. As for swordfish most of the data vailable are not in standard form because most of swordfish landed are usually dressed at sea with various ways, so the length measurement are possible done afterward. There fore conversion among different length measurements is a necessity for assessment and management purposes. Primary data was collected from scientific observer program conducted between March 2011 and December 2013, while secondary data was obtained from 2005-2013. The results showed that the models are fit quite well for Lower Jaw Fork Length (LJFL), Eye Orbit Fork Length (EOFL) and Pectoral Fork Length (PFL) (R2> 0.97; P < 0.01) and there was no significant relationship between morphometric and sex (EFL-LJFL, P > 0.05 and PFL-LJFL, P > 0.05). Correlation between sex ratio and body size proved to be significant with nearly all of the swordfish >260 cm was female.

The scorpionfish Scorpaena decemradiata n. sp. is described from off the coast of Israel in the Gulf of Aqaba, northern Red Sea. The new species is similar to S. porcus Linnaeus, 1758, but is characterized by dorsal fin spines XII, soft dorsal fin rays 10 (the last divided at base); pectoral fin rays 16, uppermost branched pectoral fin ray is the second; lacrimal with 2 spines over maxilla that point at nearly right angle from each other, the posterior pointing ventrally and slightly anteriorly; occipital pit well developed; anteriormost mandibular lateral-line pores small, separated; scales ctenoid; 59-62 scale rows in longitudinal series; scales absent on chest and pectoral fin base; and cirri developed over entire head and body, but no cirri on lower jaw. An updated checklist of the species of the genus Scorpaena Linnaeus, 1758 and a key to the species of the eastern Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea and Red Sea are presented.

Abstract Recent research suggests that calcified eyestalks and gastric mill ossicles (stomach teeth) can be used to estimate the age of some crustacean species. Along with annual growth of the endocuticle, bipartite bands in the hard tissue are believed to reflect annual growth patterns (similar to fish scales or otoliths) that are retained through repeated molt cycles. Similar bands are observed in the zygocardiac ossicles of the gastric mill from the snow crab (Chionoecetes opilioFabricius 1788). If these bands reflect annual growth, they may be used to estimate age, which could enhance understanding growth, mortality, recruitment, and age composition and improve fishery management. While some studies show that the number of bands correlates to other estimates of age for C. opilio, little evidence suggests that bands accumulate annually as growth increments independent of molting. Male C. opilio terminally molt at maturity, after which they can survive for seven years or more. Shell condition, i.e., degree of wear and epibionts on their exoskeleton, is used here and by other carcinologists as a proxy for age subsequent to the terminal molt. We estimated band counts and endocuticle thickness from thin sections of the zygocardiac ossicle of terminally molted male C. opilio across a range of shell conditions from a wild, fished stock. We found no differences in band counts (P = 0.41) or endocuticle thickness (P = 0.13) across varying shell conditions and size. These results do not support the hypothesis that band counts can be used to estimate the age of this species after the terminal molt.

The genus Cephaloscyllium Gill 1862 (Chondrichthyes, Carcharhiniformes, Scyliorhinidae) until recently had only two species recognized, C. isabellum [= C. umbratile (Jordan & Fowler 1903)] and C. fasciatum Chan 1966, from the western North Pacific (WNP), with one dubious species, C. formosanum, having been described by Teng in 1962. Recently, three additional species were described, C. circulopullum Yano et al. 2005, C. sarawakensis Yano et al. 2005, and C. parvum Inoue & Nakaya 2006 from this region. Here we present a revision of this genus for the WNP, including redescriptions of C. fasciatum and C. umbratile based on the holotypes, a re-examination of the recently described species, and descriptions of two new species from Taiwan. Cephaloscyllium umbratile can be distinguished from its congeners based on maximum size, length of first dorsal-fin base, anal–caudal space, and dorsal–caudal space. We conclude, based on a comparison of C. parvum and C. sarawakensis, that the former is a junior synonym of the latter species. The two new Taiwanese species can be separated from other WNP species by color pattern, shape of the anterior nasal flap, anal and dorsal-fin size, internarial width, and mouth size. Finally, we present a revised dichotomous key to the WNP Cephaloscyllium recognizing six contemporary taxa: C. circulopullum, C. fasciatum, C. sarawakensis, C. umbratile, C. pardelotum sp. nov. and C. maculatum sp. nov.

An Atlantic Halibut (Hippoglossus hippoglossus) (41.4 cm fork length) with the same pigmentation on the blind side as on the ocular side (ambicoloration) was captured in the lower St. Lawrence estuary, Canada, on 24 June 2004. This specimen represents the most extreme case of ambicoloration published for this species to date. As in other cases of extreme ambicoloration, this specimen shows other signs of abridged metamorphosis and reduced asymmetry, such as incomplete migration of the left eye and a hooked dorsal fin. Studies of hatchery-reared larvae have shown that the most common cause of malpigmentation, including ambicoloration, in halibut is a diet containing inadequate amounts and proportions of essential unsaturated fatty acids shortly before metamorphosis. Even though not expected to be common in the wild, inadequate diet for a short duration before metamorphosis is the most likely cause of ambicolouration in wild halibut.

The new anchovy Stolephorus babarani n. sp. is described on the basis of 26 specimens collected from Panay Island, central Philippines. The new species closely resembles Stolephorus bataviensis Hardenberg 1933 and Stolephorus baweanensis Hardenberg 1933, all these species having a long upper jaw (posterior tip extending beyond posterior margin of preopercle), and numerous dusky spots on the suborbital area (in adults), snout and lower jaw tip. However, the new species differs from S. bataviensis by usually having the posterior tip of the depressed pelvic fin not reaching to vertical through the dorsal-fin origin (vs. extending beyond vertical through dorsal-fin origin), a shorter head (23.9–25.5% of standard length vs. 25.3–28.0%), and a greater distance between the dorsal-fin origin and pectoral-fin insertion (D–P1; 133.9–151.8% of head length vs. 109.9–136.3%). Stolephorus babarani is distinguished from S. baweanensis by having a shorter snout (3.6–3.9% of standard length vs. 3.8–4.6%). Moreover, the new species can be distinguished from S. bataviensis and S. baweanensis by higher gill raker counts on the first and second gill arches (16–18 + 21–23 and 10–13 + 18–21, respectively, vs. 14–17 + 19–22 and 9–12 + 17–20 in S. bataviensis and 14–17 + 19–22 and 9–12 + 17–21 in S. baweanensis). Stolephorus babarani is separated by 5.3% and 10.7% mean p-distances in the mitochondrial COI from S. baweanensis and S. bataviensis, respectively.

During the period from April to September for the years 2014–2016, 998 swordfishes caught by the Moroccan artisanal longline fishery in the Strait of Gibraltar were sampled to study the reproduction of this species in this mixing area between the Mediterranean Sea and the North Atlantic. The results showed that the sex ratio is slightly in favour of males for sizes smaller than 130 cm LJFL (Lower jaw-fork length), whereas females are more numerous in sizes larger than 140 cm LJFL. Fifty per cent of females were estimated to be mature at 170 cm LJFL, while for males, the size at first maturity was estimated to be 95 cm LJFL. The swordfish spawn from June to September, probably in the Mediterranean Sea. The findings of this study suggest that the reproductive characteristics of swordfish caught in the Strait of Gibraltar are similar to those of the Mediterranean swordfish, and a high mixing rate between the Mediterranean and the North Atlantic stocks occurs in the study area.
