User experience (ux) in health education apps

Abstract The popularization of mobile devices has contributed to the democratization of health education in areas of difficult access through mobile learning. For effective learning to occur it is necessary to consider aspects of the user experience (ux) and aspects of human cognition in the interaction with artifacts in a social context. In this scope, a ux study of an app for health was conducted in Brazil. The app was developed by the Open University of the Unified Health System (una-sus) of the Federal University of Maranhão (ufma). The app was evaluated through interaction testing with simultaneous interviews, followed by a satisfaction questionnaire. 16 physicians took part in the study, which was conducted in their work context. In general, users did not have any prolems using the app. However, there were problems in navigating and understanding elements of the graphic interface that could affect ux and content learning. The results of the study are discussed from the perspective of Information Design and according to the Theory of Situated Cognition. Based on these results and on the literature, some recommendations for the design of health apps are put forward.

This is the second of three chapters serving as the introduction to this handbook which addresses the relationship between human cognition and assistive technologies and its design for individuals with cognitive disabilities. In this chapter the authors present strategies to manage cognitive load in the design of instructional materials for those with learning disabilities. The authors introduce cognitive load theory, which proposes a set of instructional principles grounded in human information processing research that can be leveraged in the creation of efficient and effective learning environments. They attempt to separate conjecture and speculation from empirically-based study and consolidate more than twenty-five years of research to highlight the best ways in which to increase learning. Altogether, the authors affirm the approach discussed in the last chapter—that technology for learning should be created with an understanding of design principles empirically supported by how the human mind works, particularly when it comes to the design of assistive technologies for individuals with learning disabilities.

IntroductionDue to the specific characteristics and challenges of mobile health (mHealth) technologies there is a need to have assessment tools based on their particularities to be used by health technology assessment (HTA) agencies and evaluation experts. In the development of a comprehensive and practical evaluation tool for the evaluation of mHealth solutions we aimed to include the views and opinions of key stakeholders: health professionals, developers, hospital managers, HTA agencies, patients and general public.MethodsFocus groups and an online modification of the Delphi technique are being used to discuss and agree on domains and criteria to be included in the mHealth assessment tool. Domains and criteria used for health apps evaluation were drawn from a literature review on the topic. The initial list includes 95 criteria grouped into the following domains: purpose of the app, privacy and security, clinical effectiveness, content of the intervention, user experience and usability, interoperability, expenses, impact on the organization, and legal and ethical aspects. Data coming from focus groups is currently being analyzed from a thematic and content analysis perspective.ResultsFocus groups with professionals have showed that the most important domains to be considered when evaluating health apps are those related with security, user experience, and clinical effectiveness. Some criteria were considered to be mandatory (mainly regarding safety issues), on which a first step assessment should indicate whether the app ‘pass or fails’ for the subsequent throughout assessment. Focus groups with patients will provide insight on critical aspects related to the choice, use and adherence to a health app.ConclusionsInsights from main stakeholders on the design of the tool for mHealth assessment are relevant and complementary between them. Next steps include (i) the agreement of criteria by using an online modification of the Delphi Technique and (ii) piloting of the tool.

Geospatial thinking and reasoning (GSTR) skills are currently not routinely integrated into public health curriculum for undergraduate students in colleges or universities. However, integrating GSTR skills into curriculum has been shown to increase spatial thinking skills, which leads to better cognitive thinking and problem solving skills. An Examining Vector-Borne Disease Transmission (EVBDT) curriculum unit was developed using the geospatial curriculum approach to investigate malaria, dengue fever, and zika disease spread in the environment, using patterns, data, and sociodemographic factors. The purpose of this design-based research study was to understand public health content learning and GSTR skill acquisition through use of the geospatial curriculum approach among students ( n = 95) enrolled in undergraduate public health content classes. Data sources included a classroom observation instrument; pretest and posttest measures for the Spatial Habits of the Mind survey; a pretest, Posttest 1, and delayed Posttest 2 EVBDT assessment that included public health content and GSTR skill items; and a postimplementation survey to understand students’ perceptions of geographic information systems use in the curriculum. Findings revealed significant mean differences showing growth in public health content learning and GSTR skills. The findings provide support that Web geographic information systems with appropriate curriculum design can engage students and affect both learning outcomes and GSTR skills in public health education.

RESUMOObjetivo: relatar as vivências e atividades desenvolvidas na “Casa Acolhedora do Arco” durante a edição 2015 do Projeto Vivências e Estágios na realidade do Sistema Único de Saúde (VER-SUS). Método: estudo descritivo, tipo relato de experiência das vivências de estudantes “versusianos” das categorias de Enfermagem, Psicologia e Educação Física, do grupo IV de trabalho. Para o registro de informações e coleta de dados, utilizaram-se o diário de campo e relatórios. O desenvolvimento das atividades foi fundamentado no método do Círculo de Cultura, de Paulo Freire, seguido de quatro encontros. Resultados: o primeiro encontro - apresentação dos participantes e mapeamento das palavras geradoras; o segundo encontro - aprofundamento das palavras geradoras; o terceiro encontro - reflexão/problematização sobre o papel social de ser mulher e mãe e o quarto encontro - expressão corporal, celebração sobre o sentido do apoio grupal e superação. Conclusão: o projeto VER-SUS Extensão propiciou, aos viventes, contribuir, de modo direto, no serviço de saúde de Sobral por meio da “Casa Acolhedora do Arco” Sobral onde se proporcionou o estímulo à produção de conhecimentos e sua aplicação de acordo com a realidade concreta observada no território. Design for effective information engagement through interactive sonification and visualization can be divided into two parts: (1) interface and interaction - designing the method of manipulating, investigating and interrogating information representations; and (2) information design - designing the representation, interactivity and user-customizability of the data content. The user experience is affected by the responsiveness and intelligence (awareness, contextual knowledge, situated interactivity) of the representation design. The purpose of information visualization and sonification is to transform data into information, that is, to enable users to find meaningfulness in the data. Integral to the success of computational technologies in design is an understanding of designing around the human user, the user experience, ergonomics, aesthetics, usability, and attractive, engaging, “sticky” modes of interactivity.

Objetivo: compreender as práticas dos profissionais da saúde da Estratégia Saúde da Família a partir dos princípios teórico-metodológicos da Política Nacional de Educação Popular em Saúde, no âmbito do Sistema Único de Saúde. Método: trata-se de um estudo qualitativo, descritivo, com oito profissionais da saúde, por meio de entrevistas semiestruturadas, analisadas pela técnica da Análise de Conteúdo na modalidade Análise Temática-Categorial. Resultados: obtiveram-se as categorias << Fatores que fragilizam a prática da Educação Popular em Saúde >>, << Princípios norteadores da prática dos profissionais da saúde da Estratégia Saúde da Família >> e << Práticas de Educação Popular em Saúde desenvolvidas pelos profissionais da saúde >>. Resumo: Câncer de mama é considerado uma causa de alta morbimortalidade, tanto que o Ministério da Saúde preconiza seu rastreamento. Assim, o projeto de extensão ‘O Toque pela Vida’ do curso de Medicina da Universidade Federal de Goiás, Regional Jataí, em parceria com a Secretaria Municipal de Saúde (SMS), visou ações, como o ‘Dia D do Outubro Rosa’ com o agendamento de mamografias de rastreamento e diagnósticas, objetivando a prevenção e educação em saúde. As primeiras atividades desenvolvidas foram para a atualização do conhecimento acerca do assunto por meio de grupos de estudo entre os integrantes do projeto. Também houve a realização de reuniões para o delineamento das ações desenvolvidas. Ademais, realizou-se uma análise quantitativa dos relatórios gerados pela SMS quanto ao número de mamografias mensais realizadas em Jataí, no período de janeiro de 2015 a dezembro de 2017. Houve um crescimento no número de mamografias realizadas pelo Sistema Único de Saúde na cidade concomitantemente ao início das ações do projeto, sendo que em 2017 esse aumento foi de 200%, o que revela a importância de ações que visam a educação em saúde, a facilitação do diagnóstico precoce e a maior adesão ao rastreamento do câncer de mama. Com as ações desenvolvidas, houve a confirmação da importância da conscientização no âmbito da saúde e a percepção de que a comunidade se interessa por isso, observando-se benefícios para todos os envolvidos. Palavras-chave: Neoplasia Mamária; Promoção à Saúde; Detecção Precoce    The impact of the actions developed by extension project 'The Touch for Life' in the increase of the mammographies, performed by the public health of Jataí, GO Abstract: Breast cancer is considered a cause of high morbidity and mortality. Therefore, cancer screening in the population has been strongly recommended by the Ministry of Health. The extension project named 'The Touch for Life' was developed by the students from the medical course of the Federal University of Goiás, Jatai campus, Brazil, in partnership with the Municipal Health Secretary (MHS). The project has proposed actions such as 'October Pink D Day', with screening and diagnostic mammograms schedule, aiming at the prevention and health education of that disease. The activities start creating an environment where members from the project gather together to discuss the recent studies about this cancer and plan the next actions about this project. Moreover, quantitative analysis of the reports generated by the MHS from the monthly mammograms, from January 2015 to December in 2017, was performed, as well as generating reports about the number of monthly mammograms performed in Jatai. There was a significant increase in the mammograms performed by the Unified Health System in the city since the beginning of the project. In 2017, this increase was 200%, which has shown the importance of those actions that aimed at health education. These activities have confirmed the importance of awareness in this health area and the community involvement, which leads to benefits to all people involved in this project. Hubo un crecimiento en el número de mamografías realizadas por el Sistema Único de Salud en la ciudad concomitantemente al inicio de las acciones del proyecto, siendo que 2017 ese aumento fue del 200%, lo que revela la importancia de acciones que se centran la educación en salud, la facilitación del diagnóstico precoz y la mayor adhesión al rastreo del cáncer de mama. Con las acciones desarrolladas, se confirmó la importancia de la concientización en el ámbito de la salud y la percepción de que la comunidad se interesa por ello, observándose beneficios para todos los involucrados. Abstract Instructional design is concerned with how to present verbal and visual information to learners in ways that promote effective learning processes and outcomes. Information design is concerned with how to present verbal and visual information to people in ways that promote efficient processing and understanding. The main thesis of this brief article is that instructional design is a form of information design, in which the goal is to help people learn material so that they can use it later. This article reviews exemplary principles of multimedia instructional design that are based on research evidence and have implications for information design.

Incorporating universal design (UD) both as a topic of discussion and as a pedagogical approach allows business and professional communication instructors to foreground accessibility in ways that acknowledge the rhetorical situatedness of accessibility. This article offers UD strategies that reimagine accessibility not just as a requirement that accommodates users but as an opportunity to create a rich rhetorical user experience for diverse populations. To illustrate how accessibility can be foregrounded in professional communication curricula, this article details the development of an information design course focused on usability and accessibility.
