ABSTRACT The discovery of numerous debris discs around white dwarfs (WDs) gave rise to extensive study of such discs and their role in polluting WDs, but the formation and evolution of these discs is not yet well understood. Here, we study the role of aeolian (wind) erosion in the evolution of solids in WD debris discs. Aeolian erosion is a destructive process that plays a key role in shaping the properties and size distribution of planetesimals, boulders, and pebbles in gaseous protoplanetary discs. Our analysis of aeolian erosion in WD debris discs shows that it can also play an important role in these environments. We study the effects of aeolian erosion under different conditions of the disc and its erosive effect on planetesimals and boulders of different sizes. We find that solid bodies smaller than $\sim \! 5 \, \rm {km}$ will be eroded within the short disc lifetime. We compare the role of aeolian erosion in respect to other destructive processes such as collisional fragmentation and thermal ablation. We find that aeolian erosion is the dominant destructive process for objects with radius $\lesssim \! 10^3 \, \rm {cm}$ and at distances $\lesssim \! 0.6 \, \mathrm{R}_\odot$ from the WD. Thereby, aeolian erosion constitutes the main destructive pathway linking fragmentational collisions operating on large objects with sublimation of the smallest objects and Poynting–Robertson drag, which leads to the accretion of the smallest particles on to the photosphere of WDs, and the production of polluted WDs.

Synthesising the endogenous-centred evolutionary economic geography perspective, and the globally oriented ‘global pipelines’ and global production networks frameworks, this article develops the ‘boundary spanner’ concept to propose a theoretical framework to illustrate how resourceful actors, as boundary spanners, globalise clusters and in turn drive cluster evolution. This framework comprises four interrelated cluster boundary-spanning functions, namely, discursive construction, innovation promotion, production coordination and market reach. This article aims to advance the cluster literature by unpacking how clusters’ global connections are constructed and maintained, conceptualising the multidimensional role of the agency of boundary spanners and demonstrating boundary spanners’ contributions to cluster evolution.

Lung cancer cells are well-documented to rewire their metabolism and energy production networks to support rapid survival and proliferation. This metabolic reorganization has been recognized as a hallmark of cancer. The increased uptake of glucose and the increased activity of the glycolytic pathway have been extensively described. However, over the past years, increasing evidence has shown that lung cancer cells also require glutamine to fulfill their metabolic needs. As a nitrogen source, glutamine contributes directly (or indirectly upon conversion to glutamate) to many anabolic processes in cancer, such as the biosynthesis of amino acids, nucleobases, and hexosamines. It plays also an important role in the redox homeostasis, and last but not least, upon conversion to α-ketoglutarate, glutamine is an energy and anaplerotic carbon source that replenishes tricarboxylic acid cycle intermediates. The latter is generally indicated as glutaminolysis. In this review, we explore the role of glutamine metabolism in lung cancer. Because lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer death with limited curative treatment options, we focus on the potential therapeutic approaches targeting the glutamine metabolism in cancer.

The first two main sections survey the roles of transnational networks in alleviating problems of contract enforcement and providing information about trading opportunities, respectively. The next section covers how domestic networks influence international trade through their impact on domestic market structure. Two overarching questions unify these sections: how do networks affect efficiency, and will networks grow or shrink in importance for international trade over time. The last main sections develop research agendas for two less studied areas: the role of intermediaries who can connect foreign agents to domestic networks and the ability of transnational production networks to facilitate technology transfer.

Abstract Exploiting the exogenous and regional nature of the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011, this paper provides a quantification of the role of input-output linkages as a mechanism for the propagation and amplification of shocks. We document that the disruption caused by the disaster propagated upstream and downstream along supply chains, affecting the direct and indirect suppliers and customers of disaster-stricken firms. Using a general equilibrium model of production networks, we then obtain an estimate for the overall macroeconomic impact of the disaster by taking these propagation effects into account. We find that the earthquake and its aftermaths resulted in a 0.47 percentage point decline in Japan’s real GDP growth in the year following the disaster.
