Abstract. Background: The It Gets Better project aims to help prevent suicide among lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, and queer (LGBTIQ+) adolescents. It features personal video narratives portraying how life gets better when struggling with adversities. Research on the contents of messages is scarce. Aims: We aimed to explore the content of videos in the Austrian It Gets Better project regarding the representation of various LGBTIQ+ groups and selected content characteristics. Method: A content analysis of all German-language videos was conducted ( N = 192). Messages related to coming out, stressors experienced, suicidal ideation/behavior, and on how things get better were coded. Results: Representation was strong for gay men ( n = 45; 41.7%). Coming out to others was mainly positively framed ( n = 31; 46.3%) and seen as a tool to make things better ( n = 27; 37.5%). Social support ( n = 42; 62.7%) and self-acceptance ( n = 37; 55.2%) were prevalent topics. Common stressors included a conservative setting ( n = 18, 26.9%), and fear of outing ( n = 17; 25.4%). Suicidality ( n = 9; 4.7%) and options to get professional help ( n = 7; 8.2%) were rarely addressed. Limitations: Only aspects explicitly brought up in the videos were codeable. Conclusion: Videos do not fully represent gender identities and sexual orientations. Messaging on suicidality and professional help require strengthening to tailor them better for suicide prevention.

Background: Although the effectiveness of suicide-prevention gatekeeper-training programs in improving knowledge, attitudes, and referral practices has been documented, their effects do not seem to be lasting. Aims: This study investigated situational obstacles at work that prevent suicide-prevention gatekeepers from engaging in suicide-prevention behavior and the role of social support in modifying the relationship between situational obstacles and suicide-prevention behaviors. Methods: 193 gatekeepers completed an online survey to rate the obstacles they had experienced at work since completing a gatekeeper-training program and the support received from coworkers, supervisors, and the organization. Participants also reported the frequency of suicide-prevention behaviors performed. Results: The results indicated that both situational obstacles and social support predicted the number of suicide-prevention behaviors performed, as expected. There was also a trend that support from supervisors and the organization may alleviate the adverse effect of situational obstacles on suicide-prevention behavior. Limitations: The cross-sectional nature of the study does not allow for directional, causal conclusions to be drawn. Conclusions: By understanding the roles of situational obstacles faced by trained gatekeepers at their work and the support they receive from supervisors and organizations, appropriate strategies can be identified and applied to facilitate gatekeeper performance.

Objective: to investigate, among nursing undergraduate students, the predictors of hope, suicidal thoughts and attitudes related to suicidal behavior. Methodology: Cross-sectional study, with a quantitative approach, developed in 2018 with 337 undergraduates from a Brazilian public university. We applied a sociodemographic, clinical and psychosocial questionnaire; the Suicide Behavior Attitude Questionnaire and the Herth Hope Scale. We used mean comparison tests, Pearson’s correlation test and binary logistic regression. Results: Predictors of hopelessness were psychiatric diagnoses, mental health treatment, absence of religious beliefs and dissatisfaction with the received social support. The chances of suicidal thoughts were higher among people with psychiatric diagnoses, dissatisfaction with the received social support, more understanding of the right to suicide and hopelessness. Predictors of more negative feelings about suicidal behavior were less professional competence and non participation in scientific events. Older students and those with less suicidal thoughts increased the chances of condemnatory attitudes. Predictors of fewer self-perceived competence were negative feelings about suicidal behavior, dissatisfaction with social support and less educational exposure (previous reading of suicide prevention materials or participation in events) and not having friends/relatives at suicide risk. Conclusion: it is important to develop and evaluate undergraduate support and educational strategies that consider the factors investigated in this study, in order to promote hope and training for suicide prevention.

Improvement of sanitation, environment and clean water, will substantially reduce the level of pain and severity of various diseases that can improve the degree of public health. But Indonesia still faces Open Defecation Free (ODF) which pollutes the environment. Indonesia ranks second after India (626 million people) as the country with the most ODF, which were 63 million people. In Serang Municipality, Banten Province, there are still 27.2% of people doing defecation in rivers, rice fields and others. The important factor causing it is the habit. The purpose of this paper is to discuss health promotion strategies consisting of advocacy efforts, social support and community empowerment in improving the quality of sanitation in Serang Municipality. The data is the result of group research conducted by researchers at the Research Center of the Expertise Agency of the DPR RI. The study was conducted in Serang Municipality in March 2019. Apart from the habitual problem, there are still many people who defecate in the absence of hygienic toilet facilities at home and ineffective communal toilet programs. The difficulty of getting clean water in the Serang Municipality has caused people further reluctant to make and use healthy latrines. The local government has implemented a health promotion strategy which includes advocacy for DPR and DPRD members to prioritize sanitation issues in Serang Municipality; increase social support from community leaders and conduct community empowerment.

Suicide among veterans remains a serious public health issue, and poor social support is identified as a robust risk factor for suicide. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs uses a standard safety planning procedure for suicide prevention. While this intervention can help veterans identify social support sources, it does not directly incorporate a concerned significant other (CSO). Research suggests that veterans prefer a family member or friend to help shoulder the burden of a potential crisis. This qualitative feasibility project examined the role of CSOs in safety planning with veterans. Interviews were conducted with 29 veterans and four CSOs to investigate whether veterans wanted a CSO involved in their safety plan and to investigate associated logistical issues for implementation. Overwhelmingly, veterans (79.13%) reported that having a CSO directly involved in their safety plan would be helpful. Qualitative data are presented highlighting practical concerns for mental health providers developing safety plans with veterans.

Background: Suicide has been conceived as involving a continuum, whereby suicidal plans and acts emerge from thoughts about suicide. Suicide prevention strategies need to determine whether different responses are needed at these points on the continuum. Aims: This study investigates factors that were perceived to counter suicidal ideation, plans, and acts. Method: The 36 participants, all of whom had had experiences of psychosis and some level of suicidality, were presented with a vignette describing a protagonist with psychotic symptoms. They were asked to indicate what would counter the suicidal thoughts, plans, and acts of the protagonist described in the vignette. Qualitative techniques were first used to code these free responses into themes/categories. Correspondence analysis was then applied to the frequency of responses in each of these categories. Results: Social support was identified as a strong counter to suicidal ideation but not as a counter to suicidal plans or acts. Help from health professionals was strongly related to the cessation of suicidal plans as were the opinions of the protagonist’s children. Changing cognitions and strengthening psychological resources were more weakly associated with the cessation of suicidal ideation and plans. The protagonist’s children were considered potentially helpful in addressing suicidal acts. Conclusion: These results suggest that both overlapping and nonoverlapping factors need to be considered in understanding suicide prevention, dependent on whether individuals are thinking about, planning, or attempting suicide.
